New London is a seaport city and a port of entry on the northeast coast of the United States, located at the mouth of the Thames River in New London County, Connecticut. It was one of the world's three busiest whaling ports for several decades beginning in the early 19th century, along with Nantucket and New Bedford, Massachusetts. The wealth that whaling brought into the city furnished the capital to fund much of the city's present architecture. The city subsequently became home to other shipping and manufacturing industries, but it has gradually lost most of its industrial heart.

New London is home to the United States Coast Guard Academy, Connecticut College, Mitchell College, and The Williams School. The Coast Guard Station New London and New London Harbor is home port to the Coast Guard Cutter Chinook and the Coast Guard's tall ship Eagle. The city had a population of 27,620 at the 2010 census. The Norwich-New London metropolitan area includes 21 towns and 274,055 people.
Lived in New London in the 80's....on ocean Ave. Close to the beach.love this city and Waterford too...wish I were back...
I always pass here on Amtrak, never knew this city was so much more than just a train stop between Boston and nyc. Quite an interesting place to be honest.

As a new sailor attending sub school in the early 70s, a few of us lived together in the Mohican hotel. They put all us Navy guys on one floor so we wouldn't bother the other guests! Just a short drive over the bridge to the sub base in Groton. Later on in my career, I had my own apartment near Ocean Beach. Great times I wouldn't trade for anything! Fantastic views, great video.
Growing up elsewhere in Connecticut it seemed like people rarely thought much about New London. It's a bit isolated from the state's main population centers, and given its location people wouldn't be likely to pass through it unless they were on one of the ubiquitous school field trips to Mystic Seaport or maybe visiting Newport. Today New London is way busier because of the two enormous Indian gambling casinos to its north.

Enjoyed it. Have never been in the town, but I've stopped at the Amtrak station more than a few times. Really enjoyed that part. The town looks nice, lots of beautiful churches. 👍
New London is interesting- beautiful old architecture, and an amazing history of being one of the world's most important whaling ports- but unfortunately the city has gone downhill in recent years.

I grew up in New London and love it there! Will be moving back soon as I'm not thrilled living in Hartford CT!! I miss the beaches and the friendly people down in New London and it's close to everything the malls the restaurants the beaches like I said it's a great place can't wait to move back!

I lived on State Street back in 1992 and played my portable keyboard on the library steps and played for the residents outside the senior hotel there. Saw Dennis Miller and Rich Hall at the Garde, those were good days.

Very interesting video. Yes, it does seem like New London is off the beaten path (but less so nowadays), as pointed out in another comment; yet, the city looks like an okay place to grow up and then move on. And that's okay, considering most places are like that. Never realized NL was as built up as it is. Always thought it would be more like a hamlet. Would really like to see some of the affluent and working class neighborhoods. Thanks for taking us there!

I have been living in Hartford Connecticut for the past 5 years and don't like it here at all I cannot wait to move back down by the beach and New London where it's close to the malls, the best restaurants, the casinos, pretty much everything !!! My father was born in New London and I always tried to get him to go back and visit before he passed but I guess the past was too painful for him to revisit. I'm planning to go in 2023 so I need to find the best from California to get there. Maybe fly into New York and then catch Amtrak.

This wasn't a complete tour. The driver should have taken a drive along Pequot Ave, so that they could have had the view along the Thames River, going towards Ocean Park Beach.
