Why Microsoft Tried to Buy Nintendo (and got laughed at)

  • According to an article on Bloomberg, recounting the oral history of the original Xbox, there was once a time when Microsoft actually tried to buy Nintendo.
You can't fault their logic - Microsoft wanted to compete against Sony, but knew they didn't actually have any games. So, they tried to buy Nintendo to solve their problem. Of course, Nintendo didn't actually want to be bought, which threw a spanner in the works somewhat.
We were going to do a video today on Nintendo buying Next Level Games, the makers of the more recent Luigi's Mansion games, but the idea of Microsoft buying Nintendo was just too funny to pass up, so we made this video instead. Sometimes, especially after a busy December, you've got to go with the video that makes you personally happy, I guess!
The Nintendo purchase is interesting, though, especially considering Microsoft's long and illustrious record of buying companies to get a leg up. As more and more studios get gobbled up by the big companies looking to set up a games subscription service, we're in danger of reaching a point where there are really only a handful of AAA companies overseeing bigger and bigger blockbusters.
It'd end up looking not that dissimilar to the state of the movie industry. Every game would have to be a hit, or else thousands of people will lose their jobs - so AAA games could potentially get increasingly bland and formulaic to prevent risky ventures tanking.
Of course, unlike the movie industry, the gaming community has a phenomenally strong indie scene that can more or less compete with many of the big studios, so who knows if things will end up quite the same.
So long as a random teenager can throw something together in their bedroom and accidentally sell ten million copies, the games industry will continue to be an odd place.
    Lots of love,

So let get this straight. The reason why we got the PlayStation was due to Nintendo pissing off Sony. The reason why we got the Xbox was due to Sony pissing off Microsoft.
Nintendo is literally the grandfather of modern Consoles.

Sega was one of those companies (since they used to be one the leading console manufacturing company). Xbox wanted to partner up with them to make their console, but Sega rejected it, because of their ego, they thought they could still stand alone in the console business.. it was a really stupid move from Sega, Sega's console business was in heights of declining in late 90s after PS1 debut. and partnering up with Xbox could have saved their business, but they stupidity rejected it. I believe their last console was Dreamcast, which was despite being very powerful was still a huge flop and PS2 was the last nail in the coffin of Sega's console business..

That might have had something to do with it, but Japan is hardly adverse to making good bank over something as petty as that.
What made the deal comical is that Microsoft thought that what Nintendo had was something that could be traded for profit; as though things like Mario and Zelda could have a price put on them.
It would be like asking Disney to sell it's IPs for a fixed sum when they've specifically lobbied congress to make the copyright on their properties last for centuries, turning them into constant sources of money.

Nintendo was doing a solid job in the game market at that time and still doing so. it was a stupid move by Microsoft, of course a company who is already doing pretty good aren't gonna sell themselves (especially the japanese companies, they don't usually sell themselves to westerners). if Microsoft wanted someone's guidance in their work, they should've just asked Nintendo for it. instead of just going like some wall street joker and saying "Hey! do you wanna sell yourself to us?" lol. it's like Microsoft was only seeing the discussion through their pocket, not from any strategy or self dignity to represent themselves as some kind of a respectful monarch.. they were thinking that they can sort out any issue from their money, but in return they got the taste of their own medicine
