This has to be one of the best videos I have ever seen, informative and pleasurable with the laymans terms Andy puts across. Excellent and will be purchasing.
Great video! No hours of bulshitting, straight to the point! Cheers for that . Greetings from Germany
Dang, what a great vid. I've been looking at getting back on my bike but I'm hampered by a back / hip condition which greatly limits the power in my leg. Looks like I might have found a solution. Thanks greatly Andy.
Good for u mate👍
Me: Buys expensive conversion kit thinking it will take an hour
Reality:Takes me me 1 hour to mount the battery alone

@@Rodo182 - I just built a conversation on my mountain bike with the same kit he used.
There’s no way in hell it can be done less than an hour. I am extremely mechanical & very comfortable working on bikes & it took me over 2 hours to install everything, including changing out the brake system & ripping apart the crank arm assembly to install the pedal assist.
Then another hour for the wiring.
I was all in for $550 & he’s selling this kit for over $1,000 AND it’s shipped from China directly. If you dig around on eBay you’ll find the kit.
By the way, the torque value is more important than the motor wattage.
Have just completed a conversion of this exact bike, trek marlin 5, 29er,
Fitted a 1500w hubmotor, controller and display look the same,
48V 21ah triangle battery,
power is great,
65kph on flat fully charged,
40kph up an incline,
30km range without pedalling, 60km range or so depending how much I help it by pedalling,
And the bike handles great, although braking has been affected as it is now quite heavy,
Niall Martin thank you for the information!!
sounds amazing. Where did you buy the kit and battery?
I bought the kit from CSC bikes on eBay, the battery I purchased from Etario store on Aliexpress as it was cheaper,
if I was doing it again I would get maybe a 1000w or 750w as I think they would be powerful enough,
On full throttle with the 1500w motor the display shows over 2500w consumption, not good for range when you do that,
@@NM-zb2mo Thanks for the response and tips! I'm building my own soon :)
czcams.com/video/fyYI2yCxsRc/video.html
A safety note: The brake disc bolts should only be tightened to the specified torque, which isn't high, only around 6.2Nm, about as tight as you can get with a normal Torx key without hurting your fingers - it should be a fingers action, not hauling on them with whole hand. Alternatively, just spend £20 on a torque wrench and set the torque with that, it's the right tool for the job (a battery drill isn't). If you "do them up really tight" you risk stripping the threads out of the alloy hub, as they're only tiny little bolts. This could just cause damage to wiring, or could cause a crash.
The important bit is the thread locker (Loctite 243 or similar) - medium strength Loctite 243 would probably stop the bolts backing out even if you just did them up finger-tight. Do them up to the right torque with thread-locker and it will be fine. It doesn't have to be actual Loctite, there are other brands available from bike shops or Amazon, or you can buy bolts with it already in place. Most appropriate medium strength thread lockers are blue, don't be tempted to use the green "high strength" Loctite thinking it's "better" as it can stick the hub threads so well to the bolt that the aluminium strips out when you undo the bolts. Threadlockers are anaerobic glues, they set in the absence of air, so when you do the bolts up make sure you're ready to do them all up (star pattern) and complete the job reasonably quickly.
Great video .The world needs more guys like this.
Thanks for this inspiring tutorial Andy! I'm 68 and live in a mountainous area...very tough to actually pedal uphill at my age and condition. But if I can add a kit like this to my bike and then ride the ridges by pedaling...a new world opens up. I can't really understand all the technical details...but I think our local bike shop could help me with the conversion. Thanks for sharing. I'm excited! :)
Love this hope you got riding!

Nice System 1, I have one too :) Am also looking to do what you've done here with the e bike, so thanks for the great vid !
Now we're talking!!
What a wicked bike!!
It's really weird coz I just bought a frame (hard tail carbon 29er) and wanted to rig up a motor on it.
Thank God you've been there and done it as I want to buy an electric motor for mine and I can come to you for it.
Keep up the great work.
Great video and set up. I appreciate you showing the process of putting it together and how simple it was. It's cool how you can take the battery off for charging. You got my sub! cheers from Spokane Washington USA!
please tell me
I have the same setup on my mtnb but mounted the controller on the underside of the frame with a junction box for all the wires. Found the controller was overheating in the bag and it looks much better underneath. Great vids m8 😎
Used this kit on a trek Marlin 6, few remarks:
-There's no way you can fit it in under an hour, just tying up the cables properly cost me over 20 minutes😂
-The triangle is a bit smaller, so it's a bit harder fitting the controller in there and some additional washers were needed to get the torque arm mounted.
-I do recommend a seat post with a spring, going off road on a hardtail at high speeds will crush your crown jewels at the slightest bump in the road.
I have a trek marlin 6 small frame do you think it would fit
@@jakekay3821which gen
Hi Andy, really fun video can I just offer up a couple of things, I know you mentioned the torque arms, make sure that people use them when they have aluminium frames and don't even go for a test ride before they fit them, steel frames should be fine but on aluminium you will crack them very easily if you don't use a torque arm, also if people want a front wheel motor on suspension forks you shouldn't even turn the wheel without a torque arm, someone I knew snapped his dropouts at standstill both sides when fitted to a suspension fork with no torque arms.
Look at the kits provided by luna cycles, they use similar kits to you but they get the suppliers to fit really nice quick disconnect connectors to the power and the hall wires, I thought the days of Chinese ebike suppliers supplying those naff connectors were long gone but it seems not, you want the disconnect wires near the rear axle otherwise changing out the wheel if someone gets a puncture will be a nightmare with that screw in block? in the short term you could use 30A Anderson powerpole connectors, I have been using them for 10 years on my 40,000 mile ebike, I use a simple cheap 5 pin din audio jack for the hall sensors, little things like that make all the difference I think the 5 pin din was 50p from Maplins.
This is a direct drive motor, can you test the hill climbing ability, I would be interested to know how it fares, I have been on the ebiking scene since 2000 and did dabble with supply all those years ago with Mark Higgon from Team Hybrid way back in 2006 and it was fun but it can be a PITA when stuff starts going wrong especially the batteries, dont go investing all your savings in to it mate, Im glad I kept it just as a hobby, i wish you the best of luck.
40,000 miles.. Damn is that on the same motor and hows the bike I feel after just 1000 miles mines kind of slowed down my brother has a newer motor and he seems to just take off from me. I built both bikes and as far as i know the settings am all the same

Hi Andy,
first off - bike looks great! I have similar hub motor, the wire going into the motor has a gap to fit through the axle so its on outside of frame rather than between frame and disc/motor, yours looked like it might get snagged? unless i've done mine incorrectly...either way awesome build !
almost finish paying my bike in layaway lol cant wait to get it!!

I just fitted your kit and it’s working all ok. What is the correct settings for full throttle in the parameters?
When undoing bolts you know have loctite on the threads some gentle heat will make it easy and save breaking your torx set. Ask me how I know, I've used this trick for years and never fails
That "tube stuff" is called spiral bind, or as we joke about with it..... "Pig tail"....... You could also take the screen and throttle wires down around the underside of the bottom bracket and up around the set post upright and put the bag under the saddle if the wires are long enough or up to where the bag can be put in the frame...... Well done Andy looks good, next you need to mount the paddle sensor and take off the throttle to make it a "bit" more road legal......
Incredibly useful video. Thanks mate.
Andy, tip for the cable going into the hub: make it approach from below so that rainwater drips from the bottom of the cable loop.
Get those torque arms on! I lost my previous frame because the dropouts sheared off completely and the wheel fell off - not fun!
Yes, very important.
Good tips, yes the torque arm was on for the test drive part I did the next day. Very important, I didn’t stress that enough in the video for safety. Thanks!

Also, I LOVE your videos with Dude stuff, after my ebike project I'll be going ahead and modding a Funbike MXR1300, I'm a little more nervous about that one though..
Very nice build, simple and powerful with a clean look. I'm amazed at how well the mismatched wheel sizes worked out.
Definitely want to put some torque arms on there. I have 1500 watts to rear hub motor (with regen), and it wore the dropouts even on my steel frame, to the point where the axle spun out. It took a long time for it to happen, but I wish I had just put them on. Now I have a scrap frame.
Thanks! Yes I didn’t stress the importance of torque arms in my video, I did actually install it before the main test run as you are correct, due to the high forces from the rear hub it. An easily wreck the frame or worse it could fail with you on it!
Great video!
Seriously considering one of these kits. Are there wheel sizes options? Ie 700c or 27.5"

I ran one of those at 50a for months 56v just shunt modded the 35a kt controller. the motor gave out finally when I went to 80amp and was doing a lot of pulls on the field. I think 3 to 4k is the limit for that motor without heatsinks and ferrofluid. the looks on the kids faces when you blow them away on there mopeds, even had a 125 fourstroke struggle keeping up. top speed with 27.5 wheel was 44mph andy.
On a 1000w 48v battery I get 35 on a straight did have 38 but only a few times that's only with a fully charged battery though can't imagine going 44mph though especially on a push bike
MegaNayton 40kmh or 25mph at either side if 40v is fast enough. Downhill I can reach 50kmh or 31.25mph and with a 20” wheel folder well satisfactory. At 40mph or 70kmh I could probably fit wings.

I just got my bike on the charger for the first time this year. I need to get my brake lights worked out soon, and I am considering changing the fork or rebuilding it along with the head tube cartridge and front brakes. The hope brakes don't seem to bite like I would like, but I haven't tried to tune them much.
I really am thinking I want to do a low power setup that is bikeable for work commute. I am leaning towards a middrive for that, and may use my gt zaskar frame or start from scratch.
Excellent vid, my kit arrived today so I’ll be putting it on my 2017 specialized rockhopper tomorrow, but at a much more sedate pace with many tea and biscuit breaks .
how you getting on. I am about to order one. How long did delivery take?
Mike Pell hi, to be honest the kit arrived in a couple of days from modds ebike and had everything you needed other than the battery , which I had ordered separately from Germany and took just over a week to arrive. With a busy work schedule it’s been on the back burner for a bit ,but I’ve mounted the battery , fitted display and throttle and then realized that the connection between battery and controller were completely different . New connections arrived today ,along with a more heavy duty tyre from schwalbe, but unfortunately I’m feeling under the weather and had a coved test today at stansted and waiting on the results, so for now it’s just all sat there ready to be assembled, but I’m just too unwell to crack on. This is my first attempt at an ebike build so I’m expecting some issues but will let you know how it goes when completed. It’s a 1500w kit with a 48v battery so I’m expecting some serious speed.......we shall see.
Hi Andy. Great video. Looking to do a conversion myself. Want to ask a question that doesn't appear to have been covered anywhere else... How easy would it be to replace the rear inner-tube if you're out and about and get a puncture?
Just came by your comment, and as a fellow conversion kit rider myself, it sucks :) Ive had 500w in front for about two years now, and you need a wrench and Allen key to undo the nuts on the axle and the torque arm. It can be done by turning your bike upside down in the field, but you would always need the tools. For me, ive bought a fake bottle, like the toolbox ones, and keep the tools in there. Also invest in some durable tires like the 'glassproof' Schwalbe marathon plus type. They weigh slightly more, but since youre on an ebike, this is a non issue. My tire change PR is about 2 mins, but your mileage may vary.
I've never known of E-BIKE conversion kits..
So this is a way cool video.
I'd like to ask do they make *CHEAPER* FANS for work sites with that don't have electricity, or for family reunions, gatherings at parks or cabins..
Or cheaper conversion kits to turn a gas mower to push to start

I’m concerned about the import duty that’s in the small print. How much extra is it going to cost to get it to me?
About an arm, a leg and one of your testies.
I got stung for £38 on the motor and speedo, and nothing on the battery.
I thought exactly the same thing. Did you end up buying it? How much extra did it add?
Is it worth buying the conversion kit? How much can you save by converting a normal bike rather than buying an e-bike??
The performance and functionality of this is much more than you'll get from a ready made ebike.
How have you found this setup over time. I'm thinking of doing the same with the same bike or do you have a recommendation for another bike to convert in the same price range

@radio tech Regret not going there years ago when I had the chance. This place is an Orwellian nightmare
Just checked gov website: "These electric bikes are known as ‘electrically assisted pedal cycles’ (EAPCs). You do not need a licence to ride one and it does not need to be registered, taxed or insured." see - www.gov.uk/electric-bike-rules
So if Brummie plods stop you, refer them to the above and tell 'em to do one
i think if you have pedals you are ok, if you have fixed foot peggs you will have problems with plod as it is not a EAPCs
As long as the maximum power output isn't above 250 watts.
You’ve installed the handlebars the wrong way up, the shifters should be underslung and if you don’t flip the brake levers over you will loose your brakes!!!!!

Yes increasing the voltage with a suitable controller make s a big difference, I remember the difference going from 24V to 50V was amazing, I got passed by a Lycra biker when running on 24V and he said that looks heavy, 2 months later and nobody passes me ha ha and I could do this all those years back, I can go even quicker now if I want to but to be honest 30mph is fast enough on a normal bike czcams.com/video/dzdw6d3xKpg/video.html
knoxieman I eventual return the 36v battery to the UK. To be fair it’s original self build Ah was 41.6Ah 10s 13p. When the 72v charger arrives with current adjustable 2-18amp! In the post should also be a digital CV CC step down transformer to allow greater charge voltage flexibility.

exactly what i did with mine. its fantastic.
bad ass dude... keep em coming...
