Based on the cult sensation novel by Ned Vizzini, BE MORE CHILL is the story of Jeremy Heere, your average, nothing-special teenager at Middleborough High in nothing-special New Jersey. That is, until the day he finds out about "The Squip." Thus begins a journey that pits Jeremy's desire to be popular against his struggle to remain true to his authentic self. I like this version a LOT. While the original gives Jeremy the bitterness and the anger at himself that he needs to get SQUIPped, this one gives him the sadness and the introspection that he needs to push him to that boiling point. Also, just from a logistical standpoint, having the song be softer all the way through allows it to have more of a build at the very end and makes that last note really stick out, showcasing Will's belt better.

It’s not Will singing, it’s Jeremy. He’s in character more than on the album
The new vocals that Will has in this and just the music... it give us a whole new light on this song and the way Jeremy feels. In the previous recordings, Jeremy always seemed frusterated, or angry in a way, but still hopeful (ish) for a new start. This one is much more smoothed over and Jeremy actually sounds sort of... defeated and lost at the beginning. Even the way Will delivers and sings these notes are different. Before he kind of seemed like he was trying to prove or sort of explain why he was doning what he was doing, but now he's just... defeated. Like "I was so pathetic that I couldn't even do this, huh? Well, now I've got someone to do it for me." Both are such beautiful additions to the fandom and musical and add so much more depth into Jeremy's character.
This song is more than amazing. Will's voice is more than amazing. Wow.

I don't know where in the musical this song appears, but if it sounds like it world fit in place of Upgrade. The lyrics change Jeremy's character and bring out the line he says before Michael in the Bathroom about the universe owing him one. And the line about ignoring the apprehensive voice in is head makes Voices in my Head more significant. I love the lyrics so much!
Im pretty sure it's like the new ending to act one so yeah it takes place at the end of upgrade before the Optive nerve blocking but I don't know if they changed it now they are on Broadway like they changed some stuff again (apparently) hope this helps 🙂

I really do like this version because Will's voice just...floats. He really excels in higher keys. I also love the more melodic approach to the song compared to the in-show version, which to me is more acting than singing (but singing nonetheless). His voice sounds very pretty here.
