Joe Iconis is a musical theater writer and a fixture on the New York cabaret scene. He is the recipient of a Kleban Prize, a Jonathan Larson Award, an ASCAP Harold Adamson Lyric Award, and a MAC John Wallowitch Songwriting Award. He has also been nominated for two Drama Desk Awards and a Lucille Lortel Award. Joe’s songs appeared on Season 2 of NBC’s “Smash” and his writing has been featured in The New York Times. He is the author of: “The Black Suits” (Center Theater Group, Barrington Stage Company); the rock-and-roll Spaghetti Western musical “Bloodsong of Love” (Ars Nova, NAMT); “ReWrite” (Urban Stages, Goodspeed Opera House); and Theaterworks USA’s “The Plant That Ate Dirty Socks” and “We The People.” Joe is currently working on a musical about Hunter S. Thompson for La Jolla Playhouse/Broadway Across America, with book-writer Gregory S. Moss.

At 10:30 I swear I can hear someone speaking in the background, which after there's a lull in the vocals, sounds like 'The audience... isn't impressed.' 'Well, it doesn't matter.' And the fact that you can hear that in the background, especially after the (and I use this term loosely) 'Autistic joke' fell flat on its face... man, that just hurts. Being that I'm writing my own musical, if I heard someone saying stuff like that in the background while publicly performing some of the songs I'm writing, I think my heart would break.

I actually had no idea about that line being from the book! I haven't actually had time to read the book that the musical is based on, but hearing that it's a direct line both puts my mind at ease and continues to worry me. Like, the fact that the line exists at all is a bit... eugh. But, hey, at least they took it out of the musical, which as far as I can tell has had more exposure than the book did(?).

Little did they know it would change the hecking world.
I get why it would be annoying and rude at surface level but considering the message the show and the context and setting the autistic and gay lines where used in (the whole point of this song is that Jeremy starts to feel bad about things he does when in reality there is nothing wrong with him, which clearly implies that there's nothing wrong with autistic or gay obviously, and also it's realistic considering the squip is supposed to represent the anxiety teens get about fitting in with their peers and people certainly get picked on for having those characteristics) I really don't understand how people are really that offended by it :/ I mean it's definitely better that they took it out but I understand the point of the lines and don't think it's something to projectile vomit about

Lon_Island Because the autistic community has been oppressed for years and when people use "autistic" as a negative word it makes me mega uncomfortable? Good for you for not caring about positive representation, but some of us really want to be accepted and understood as human beings.
I would just like to say, the autistic line is said by the Squip. The Squip is meant to be a representation of self doubt and hatred. Considering the fact he says he makes him want to die and many awful things it's very clear that the musical is not saying that this is okay. The point is the Squip is telling Jeremy he's horrible and Jeremy believes it. I don't know about you but as someone on the spectrum I go through self doubt a lot and sometimes I hate being on the spectrum. And that's what the Squip represents. That negative aspect of our mind that tells us how horrible we are.

I'm kinda glad they fixed "Be More Chill." It sounds boring and that Jeremy has no opinion on what the Squip was doing. In this, Jeremy has more expression, but nothing verbal. In the show, he has more dialogue that makes him unsure of what the Squip is doing. I like it.
