I love all your basic explanations. One thing that does confuse me, however, is how you are counting the steps that are off-the-beat. You are counting it out as a shuffle rhythm (i.e. the blues rhythm in which the first step is 2/3 of the beat and the second is 1/3 of the beat, but you are speaking it as 1 a 2 a 3 a 4, which would mean that the first step is 3/4 of the beat and the second step is a very quick final 1/4 of the beat (i.e., a dotted eighth followed by a 1/16 note). And then when you dance it to the music, you are dancing in the as dotted eigth notes followed by sixteenth notes. That makes sense, but your swing counting without music makes me wonder if you also do this dance to music with a swing beat.

Hey there! Thanks for the kind words and the question.
I'll start by saying this, the focus of the video is more for beginners to get them moving so we kind of leave out the higher level details on purpose. That does lead to confusion from time to time when someone has a deep understanding of music. Usually deeper than us ;-)
      Samba is danced 3/4, 1/4, Whole Beat for 'most' of the patterns. (*1* e & *a* *2*)
We kind of 'count it wrong' in the beginning because in our experience getting beginners to 'feel the rhythm and bounce' of samba is tricky. So we might say 'ah 1, ah 1' to get people moving into the up part of the action so they can get a feel.
Later we would stress the actually holding the 3/4 of a beat on the first step.
That's the only tricky thing about youtube videos... we have to make an educated guess in what we say knowing it's not the best explanation for everyone.
      I hope that helps clarify!
      Thanks for the question 🙂
      Best wishes,
      Brian
PS even when we dance to music we're not really holding quite as long as we would if we we're in 'competitive' mode but the goal is to just make it look more social like the majority of people might look when social dancing.

Really like this approach..... I was a professional dancer for years and taught many, many dance classes. I am not a fan of the videos that belabor the "technique"...... they can always layer that in later. Your method give them basic skills that they can use on the dance floor!!!

Thank you!! We want all levels of people to feel comfortable trying new styles and feeling confident on the dance floor. Like you said, people can always layer in technique later!! ♥️ Dance is for everyone!
