    @Nina-df3zq Před 3 lety +13

    The Odyssee is the continuation of the Iliad, in which Achilles - for obvious reasons - does not play a part. Hence why you may be confused with the story since Greek Mythology is so complicated. After all, Homer wrote it in the 8th century B.C. As someone who studied Ancient Greek and Latin in high school and translated both the Iliad and the Odysee, I freaking love this book!
    On the relationship between Patroclus and Achilles, in the original version, the relationship is (although debatable) platonic. It's more about family and honour than it is about love. What happens to Patroclus is what defines Achilles' fate. Therefore, Patroclus is more a plot device than he is a "hero" in the Iliad. That's probably why you needed more reasoning for their relationship.

    • @dexterquimson8624
      @dexterquimson8624 Před 2 lety

      And what's refreshing about TSoA was that it's on Patroclus' POV, observing the heroes that are mostly centered in many other versions of this story.

It was interesting to step outside of the main characters’ perspective and read a stranger’s interpretation of events that day in the market. I don’t think I read another book for like a week because my heart was broken. My mind was like: “You knew Vivek was going to die since page 1. I had a professor in college who pronounced all his words normally but pronounced "pseduo-" as in "pseudoscience" by saying "suede-o" (like a suede jacket), and now thanks to Lala I'm like was he an alien!?

    Finally someone that also didn’t cry while reading Song of Achilles. I felt soulless afterwards, but I just didn’t care at all for the characters and was unfazed by the end.

    Yay! I’m so glad you enjoyed House in the Cerulean Sea! I also think we must have similar tastes in dystopian books because I didn’t enjoy Scythe as much as I expected. Starting Hunger Games later this year, so we’ll see how it goes.

    Me: I don't like watching movies, they're so long, I don't have the patience.
    Also me: look at this glorious and long video! 😍
    PS: I think you would like Circe from Madeleine Miller better. 😉

    I really enjoyed hearing your thoughts on Song of Achilles. I actually approached it from the opposite end of the spectrum--I knew a LOT about Achilles' story going in, so nothing took me by surprise, so I didn't really enjoy it. I spent the whole reading experience thinking that it would be more appealing to people not as familiar with the tale. I hope that in the future you try Miller's other book, Circe, because I would love to hear what you have to say about that one. Great video, as always!

    I love Scythe. The entire series was great, well-written and a unique premise. I read the entire trilogy with 2 of my kids.
