The term "marijuana" came into popular usage in the U.S. in the 1930s, when they began making campaigns to ban it. Anti-cannabis factions wanted to underscore the drug's "Mexican-ness" by giving it a Mexican sounding name. In this way, the people directly linked the plant with mexican immigrants and that same year the plant was illegalized. Coincidence huh?
I'm mexican and am not offended by this tho, although funnily here the name is also used moreso by people that are against it and it's used in a derogaroty maner to people that smoke. "mariguanos". I prefer saying cannabis, sounds fancier no?
