I've seen this movie so many times, and Djimon Hounsou's delivery always gets me.

He was also paying respect to his family by burying the totems. Just an all around bro.
The best/worst part about it is he was just saying the same thing to Maximus a week earlier about him meeting his family. And now it's fulfilled.

Maximus ritual of grabbing dirt “earth” is a way of grounding himself in that moment I believe. As he mentioned in the beginning he is a farmer he was used to having dirty hands so I think it was always a reminder of his hope of a simple life but also grounding himself in that moment in time
Yeah not being grounded is also why Commodus became his own worst enemy while Maximus through his rituals and willingness to humble himsel, becomes the hero. Psalm 34:21 "Believe it or not, but evildoers will eventually destroys themselves. Their own iniquities shall be their punishment. Yes, wickedness is it's own executioner."
It's just for a better grip. Simple as that.

Yeah... unfortunately it's totally fake, after Commodus' death followed a huge turmoil, with 5 emperors in a year, assassinations, intrigue and the Pretorian Guard was at the center of it. So Quintus there was actually a villain :)

To watch Oliver Reed CLEARLY incorporate how he felt about being a famous actor in his youth and probably knowing this could be his last roll is such a privilege. A master of the craft. What an AWESOME monologue.

Under every Gladiator video I want to point out how amazing his acting was. He was like 101% in the role, beyond believeable.

A little fun fact about history and this movie. The romans actually had an early form of the advertising we see in the modern day. They actually had early forms of billboards and posters and action figures and all kinds of merchandise to make money off the gladiators. Ridley Scott had wanted to include all of that in this movie but they realized that most people's knowledge of history is so incomplete the inclusion of that historically accurate meechandising and advertisement would have pulled people out of the film.

'Now we are free' is one of the most beautiful pieces of music I've ever heard. It's ethereal but also speaks to what I can only descibe as my soul or connection to the human experience that for me is ongoing and that my ancestors have felt before me. I'm not religious but the emotions it invokes are spiritual for me. Talk about echoing in eternity.

Woah what a coincidence, I was literally watching Gladiator reactions like 2 hours ago. Incredible movie, legendary performances, ive seen it over 10 times and more if we count reactions but the ending still brings tears to my eyes.
Ridley Scott's historical epics are pretty great. Check out the director's cut of Kingdom of Heaven for another. The cast is pretty great, and Ridley always delivers some beautiful shots.

Yes, but DO NOT WATCH the standard release... it cuts a pretty important plot point that makes the entire story collapse. Otherwise realistic political decisions don't make sense or seem petty... the theater release is basically an action movie without the nuance. The director's cut is simply a great movie.

I honestly admire Marcus Aurelius. Being an emperor of Rome had to be unbelievable demanding and stressful. Yet inside he was a kind and wise man with deep love for the world and wonders of life. His legacy in Meditations is incredible. It's his personal notes. Not ment to be published. just his own private thoughts and fears. Its cool to see into the head of the most powerful man alive almost 2 thousand of years ago. A man everyone should aspire to be.
Also Quintus was not evil himself. He had huge respect for Maximus thw whole time. But was kinda the 'follow the orders' guy. He was supposed to serve the emeperor. Not to make moral decisions. So it is cool to see how through the movie he realize this and his mistake. Still an explitivehole but not so far from how people sometimes are.
It's such a perfect use of anti-climax that, even mortally wounded, Commodus - who has only ever looked schooled in practice scenes with men who know they can't hurt him - was not a serious challenge to Maximus. It's almost the easiest fight he has the whole movie, in fact, under the circumstances.
What's amazing about Gladiator is how it's more than just an action movie, it has beautiful moments of humanisation woven throughout the movie. These little touches make the relationships feel real and the characters relatable.
Well worth watching it with director's commentary, so many clever ideas when into making this movie.

Wow, I didn't expect this reaction, my all time favorite movie.
This is a legendary film, and honestly one of the few “revenge” films that feels so earned. And the fact that Maximus is such a progressive man of his time isn’t a writers ploy to make you like the main character, it is why Marcus Aurelius chose him to be Protector of Rome. To me, this movie is what announced Russell Crowe as a star in Hollywood. Dude absolutely killed it.
There was nothing "progressive" about Maximus. He was fighting to conserve the "dream that was Rome" and had traditional family values.
@@KurNorock He treated slaves like normal people, he believed Rome should be ruled by a republic after Aurelius’s death, instead of an emperor, he spares the lives of his opponents in the Colosseum instead of fighting to the death like was tradition, and right before he dies he asks for all the slaves to be freed. If that’s not progressive for Middle Ages Rome, Idk what is.

In ancient Rome, most slaves were not in some permanent slave class. They were average people that were put into slavery as a form of either legal punishment, or to repay some debt. 99% of ancient Romans treated slaves like normal people.
The story of this movie, and the history of actual ancient Rome, was that it already was a republic ruled by the senate for a long time, until one of the Cesars took control back for the purposes of empire building. So the conservative ideal was to go BACK to the republic. In fact, there is a whole conversation in the movie about how Commodus was bringing the games BACK after they had been banned for a long time.
Sparing the lives of opponents in the colosseum was not unique or new. Despite popular belief, deaths in the colosseum weren't that common. Gladiators were still commodities and just killing them off en-masse was not only poor business practice, it was seen as poor form. Gladiators were usually only ever killed if they were violent criminals being put to death.
He also didn't ask for slaves to be freed. He asked for "My men" to be freed. "My men" referred to only the soldiers that fought for him that were captured and imprisoned, and the few gladiators that fought with him. He freed no other slaves or anybody else.
As I said, he wasn't doing anything progressive. He was trying to restore Rome to a previous ideal that already existed. He was trying to conserve "the dream that was Rome" as he said in his own words.
If anybody in the movie was a progressive, it was Commodus. Constantly making changes for the sake of change, acting on emotion over reason, total lack of self control, being ok with cheating as long as the end result goes his way, and creepy sexual deviancy. Sounds like a typical progressive to me.
@@KurNorock Interesting how you think “progressive” refers to only the first person to ever do something, considering modern day American progressives are for the most part copying European policies. You can try to twist meanings and definitions to your advantage, but Maximus is anything but conservative. Aurelius literally chooses him to become Protector, bc he knows he is different from everyone else, and will do what is right. And yes, obviously he does not ask for every slave in the Roman Empire to be freed. He was a dying man who never officially had any capacity in charge of Rome, they would never have done that. That would be like a former army general in the US commanding that all slaves be freed as he dies from cancer.

Your point about why Aurelius chooses Maximus to be protector of Rome is meaningless. What is your point? Maximus is progressive just because he was chosen or just because he was good? Are you trying to imply that only progressives can be good?
And your final point also makes no sense. If they wouldn't free all the slaves on his order then why would they do anything else? Why would they transfer power from the emperor to the senate on his order? That would be a MUCH more complex change than freeing all the slaves.
And yes, a former army general couldn't command that all slaves be freed, but he also couldn't command that the executive branch of the federal government should be stripped of power either. So what is your point?

there are some pieces of writing that strike you in such a way that they forge your heart into a bell and when struck. you can not help but ring in resonance. when Russel cried for the loss of his wife and son. from the first I knew it would be one of those things that stuck with me. but the visual performance makes this film timeless. if anyone reading this has read the name of the wind. it hits like Kvothe on a winter night when his hands dug threw the snow to try and find a coin. when he bought food and was saved by a man wearing the mask of a demon. and was shown more kindness than from the city guard. that all hit me in the chest. but when the girl cried for him. and even though he was beaten and cold he still told her he was okay. now I want to re-read it again.
I love the Name of The Wind! That part in the book also broke me. Gosh I need to read it again. I haven’t finished Wise Mans Fear yet ❤️

@@richo6537 I wish I was a writer. I've pieced together the occasional short story. but my mastery of written English is sorely lack in terms of grammar. I've always been able to speak well and I've had my fun a turning a phrase into something I felt was flowery or pretty. but half the time I wonder if I'm even using a comma to the best effect. I will say that this is the best compliment that I've received in regards to anything I've written for the past two months. if you find it lovely then you could only do so because the same is reflected in the facets of understanding. I may contezualized it and gave you a outline. but your perception filled in the color with your hues, sorry *views. you just have to have fun with your words. thank you again

Thank you for this reaction. I absolutely love this movie. And Russell Crowe is one of my favorite actors. He was HUGE back then, and acted in a number of fantastic films. He was nominated for Best Actor three times, winning for this role in Gladiator. Would love to see you react to more of his work. His best, imo: “L.A. Confidential”, “A Beautiful Mind”, “Master and Commander: Far Side of the World”, “Cinderella Man”, and “3:10 to Yuma” (the 2007 remake). Subscribed.
Btw, a lot of people miss that when Maximus sees Commodus “fighting” with his sword in the woods at the camp, you see he and his men practicing literally every move. Then they perform it like a choreographed dance. All for show. One gets the idea he’s probably never really fought anyone before.
Much of the CGI Rome was based on some more recent archeology. The "shading system" at the colosseum had just been recently theorized (the other theory believed the notches were for massive beams for scaffolding during it's construction) and it was cool to see the system used in a movie.
This is my favourite movie of all time.
I struggle with displaying emotions but I always start crying the moment maximus gets betrayed and I just don’t stop for the entire movie.

But he’s even better in a little movie called “TWO LOVERS” with Gwyneth Paltrow. He’s actually amazing in it.
And then of course JOKER.
“TWO LOVERS” is actually an excellent intelligent film, with an ending that will stay with you for days.

The actor Oliver Reed who plays Proximo (the gladiator owner) died during filming. So you can see his death scene in this is really awkward bc they didn't have the footage for whatever his real ending scene was supposed to be. He had finished all his other scenes. So they just used a clip of him from another scene saying "shadows and dust" then cut to the wide shot of an extra in shadow being killed.
A little bit of history lesson here:
In 100 AD or so, there were 4 known empires in the World.
Rome, China, Persia and Aksum.
Wholesome reaction to a great epic, Imon. I think the screenplay of Gladiator was based on some Shakespearean material with a little historical facts sprinkled. Even the actor who played the role of senator Grakus had appeared in many Shakespeare films and stage plays.

The movie itself is loosely based on true events! :) Emperor Commodus really was obsessed with putting on gladiator games and there really was a general Maximus who Commodus had murdered. The rest is artistic license-still an absolutely fantastic film 22 years after I saw it in theaters.
One of my favorite examples of cinematic "Not true but contains truth."
I watched Gladiator when I was a kid and I was so amazed, it made me addicted to historical movies.. such a beautiful sad epic story.. great reaction and discussion as always Imon

Gladiator was one of the first “big” movies I watched and it still hurts watching it. Exceptional movie with great characters, wonderful messages and a fantastic story. Thank you for reacting to it and sharing your thoughts with us.
Picking up the dirt is meant to help him keep his grip on the sword. Like when people lifting weights put chalk or powder on their hands. The Roman Gladius had a smooth handle and soldiers could sometimes lose thier grip during sword on sword collisions.
Yes, that and it also shows his connection to the Earth, being a Farmer. Same reason he touches the grains/Wheat as he walks through the field at his home.

i felt the same way for a long time, but with so many mad people there is still many good people out there. I use to have so much hate for humanity, slowly i grew as a person( and still growing) and i see that the biggest change you can make in this world, starts with you. most people just need good people around them for them to know they are not alone cause our love, wisdom and memories is all we leave behind. be kind to each other we all going thru our own struggles colliding into each others life's. i love your perspective on movies and what it means to you, very brave thing to express yourself . thanks for sharing, keep it up

I remember seeing this in the theater back in 2000. The audience ERUPTED into cheers and applause when Maximus killed Commodus.

Maximus is a spaniard , his country was vassal of Rome at that time , Rome had the right to either enslave* his people or take them young from their homes and train them as soldiers for the roman army ( just like what probably happened to Maximus ) . He had no choice i'm afraid

This was indeed a beautiful movie. Aside from the typical things that we think of in beautiful movies, like the color palette, cinematography, costume design, put that all aside. The best thing was the character of the man himself. An ordinary farmer who was faced with the unimaginable and still in the midst of it all stayed steadfast and did the right thing.

A lot of people praise Hans Zimmer only for the gorgeous score, but most of the more haunting melodies were actually written by Lisa Gerrard, who was also the main brain behind "Now We Are Free". She's an Australian opera-trained singer who sang in the indie band Dead Can Dance with English folk singer and musician Brendan Perry, they made some absolutely amazing music together. She now mostly does movie scores and her own performances, but not many of the latter.
Your response at the end of Gladiator really moved me, this film always has, we all lose people in our lives that mean so much to us, your Message about Jesus also got me cause I'm exactly the same, stories of him have always got to me and move me, plz if you havnt watched Ben Hur watch that soon, it's a old film but a film with a strong message throughout especially with Jesus in it at times that are really moving, also about family and lost a great film is also Legends of the fall with a young Brad Pitt, I promise you will love it.
The thumbs up thing is to determine if a gladiatorial fight will end in death. Historically, thumbs down ment life,thumbs up meant death, but the movie switched them to be easier for modern audiences to understand. Originally, the thumb signal meant swords down, or to take them up and finish it
Love your honesty! I was invited by my cousin to watch it when it was in the theaters and I did not know what a roller coaster of emotions it would be! I was very choked up at the end! I barely held it together and to this day this movie is in one of my top films.
Ooh, fun! Commodus is one of my favorite "love-to-hate-him" characters of all time. Just a little slimeball... it's great!
The best opening in cinematic history!
Ridley Scott is hands down the best director ever. His movies are a delight for the eyes but the horrors of war are never glorified and his characters are always iconic.
_Thelma and Louise_ and Ridley's Director's Cut of _Kingdom of Heaven_ are masterpieces.
You can’t say he is “hands down” that’s really jumping the gun. Spielberg, Fincher, Kubrick and Scorsese will have a bit to say about that! He is one of the all time greats though 💯
If you've never seen it, I recommend Back Draft, an amazing movie with Kurt Russell, Robert De Niro and Donald Sutherland. Very under rated movie but extremely well acted and great story line. No one else has done a reaction on this movie.
I saw it when I was a kid! I don't remember it all that much. But i do remember going to Universal studios as a kid and seeing the Back Draft attraction

The first time I've ever noticed this but at the start when the headless Roman guy comes back to the Roman lines and Maximus is going past the troops "blood and honour" etc, the background chant by the Barbarians is actually the Zulu chant from the 1964 movie "Zulu"

The actor that played Proximo the trainer died during filming. The scene where he talks to Maximus through the prison bars before letting him out when the Roman soldiers were attacking the compound was a face replacement CGI. Extremely well done for 1999. Most people have never even noticed it.

One of the greatest movie going experiences I’ve had back when this came out , also The great Oliver Reed played Proximo and died while they were filming so they had a double film his death, that’s why
He didn’t put up a fight, I believe the director said he was going to be the one burying Maximus little figurines in the arena at the end but had yo change that part also , I really enjoyed your reaction it really got to me , thanks again!

I remember when I first watched this movie going into expecting ...you know a pretty great action packed movie and leaving as a man with tears in his eyes and I dont cry easy. Its something when you can watch a film or a tv series and it moves you really moves you and Gladiator was def one of those especially expecting something else and getting something so much better.

"its that old man's fault"....the desire to see the good in people is reserved? he was the ruler of the "known" world and he wanted to see the good in his son....thousands of kilometers away separated by war and roads not built, he was absentee but wanted security for his son and rome. For the same reasons he chose a man that would guarantee that security for his son, rome and future generations....leaving the world to the people via maximus

I remember seeing this for the first time in theaters 20+ years ago in high school. This is one of my favorite films and even though I hate the character, Crowe is great and Juaquine Phoenix was absolutely incredible in this. This movie is loosely based on the true events of the Roman Empire and Ridley Scott even brought in historians for more accuracy, though Maximus was not a real person nor apparently based on one, however it’s said that Commedus did compete as a gladiator.
This was a great reaction to a great movie.

Setting everything on fire on the enemy side is to cause confusion and panic in the enemy ranks as well as obscuring the cavalry charge that came from the rear, also when they did that little sparing match shirtless Joaquins character doesn't REALLY have skills if you notice they go slow and coriograph* (idk how to spell 😭) the fight then they do it fast so he looks cool.
To add to your Russell Crowe experience, may I respectfully suggest "Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World." Another military (naval) movie with great character development, action, and authenticity.
