Awesome movie
He need another horse because home is a long way (SPAIN) and they were in Germany. One horse with a rider will collapse very quickly. So he will keep swapping horses.
Seriously? You find the gayest guy in your crew that hasn’t seen this to call it a reaction? F off!
fun fact: jack gleeson who played joffrey in game of thrones said he took inspiration from joaquin phoenix's performance in this movie.
that..makes so much sense
I was just thinking a minute ago those two performing. They were so annoying in their roles which means they're incredible actors!
Dude nobody cares. Don’t know why you and every GOT loser keeps bringing this up
I can really see it!
"Now we are free" is one the most saddest and yet most bittersweet osts ever composed.
How on earth is that a sad song?
Just check the translation.
yeah, you need to watch more movies
@@kubamakar22 What translation? There are no words. She's not singing in any language.
Yes everyone in this reaction has seen Gladiator in 2014.
I get chills every time I hear his monologue “I am Maximus Decimus Meridius”
Don't you mean "Maximus Gladius Happius Maximus"?
“Commander of the Armies of the North, General of the Felix Legions and loyal servant to the true emperor, Marcus Aurelius. Father to a murdered son. Husband to a murdered wife. And I will have my vengeance, in this life or the next.”
😵
@@BrienBellJTS That delivery is cold as all hell.
This life or the next😤
For me it’s “ there was a dream that was Rome”
This movie is a masterpiece. Always makes me cry in the last scene with the family, the music, the colors, everything is just so emotional. Gladiator will always have a special place in my heart, glad you guys enjoyed it aswell
100%. One of the few films that makes me cry everytime
That was the reunion with his family Maximus deserved the first time.
Yep, i almost never cry at emotional movie scenes but that scene, still every time and yes that combination of scene, shot, and that epic music.
Same!
Yup. This and Last Samurai
Maximus crying at the feet of his dead family will never cease to break me. Russell Crow really nailed the look of a man who just lost everything.
yep seen it a million times still gets me everytime
He lost everything yet kept his honour and constructive outlook on life, truly an inspiration. 9 out of 10 other men in his position would have given in to hatred and despair.
“What we do in life, echoes an eternity” 😤✊🏼
Russell Crowe and Joaquin Phoenix did such a fuckin' excellent job!
It is why this movie is ALWAYS a TOP 5 for me
AN ALL TIME CLASSIC!
It loses points though for its historical inaccuracies and the theme sounding too much like the Pirates of the Caribbean imo
@@DirkDiggler1961 This came out before Pirates 1 (2004) and Hans Zimmer did the music for both Gladiator and Pirates. Artists will get inspiration from everything, including their own things.
@@DirkDiggler1961 is it attempting to be historically accurate?
@@DirkDiggler1961 its a movie, not a documentary, and it doesnt sound like pirates of the caribbean, pirates of the caribbean sounds like gladiator, gladiator was first so it cant lose points for sounding like something that came after it
@@DirkDiggler1961 Fail... This came out first... And this music is better and first so yeah. Worthless inaccurate comment.
I can't even watch a reaction to this film I saw a million times, without crying at the end... Such a timeless movie and insane performance of Russel Crowe...
There was a dream that was Rome
How come we don't get legendary movies like this anymore? Can't think of any that have come in the recent years
@@cassu6 Woke and leftist culture in Hollywood.
Same here... Same here
I was watching Ridley Scott talk about this film and he said during the death scene at the end, when the camera pans the audience watching silently, some extra reaches up and scratches his face and Ridley Scott said every time he sees that scene he wants to kill that guy. 🤣
I think its the guy at 50:28 , looks like he moves some hair behind his ear
How has Aaron not seen this before?!
I’d do anything to see it again for the first time.
The first time I saw the film it was....fine but it just didn't connect for me.
I saw it again, and many times since, and was blown away.
Aaron… hasn’t seen many popular movies 😅
CZcams views.😊
There is a deleted scene where Quintus is forced to execute 2 of his soldiers by Commodus further lessening Quintus faith and support of the "emperor", which ties into him not supporting Commodus during the final battle.
Oliver Reed was a damn good actor and had a hell of a voice. RIP
And sadly he died during the making of the film and some of his scences use CGI to finish them imagine what it would have been like with Oliver Reed and Richard Harris in the same film during their wild years
Did you ever read how he died during the filming of Gladiator? During a break from production he had a drinking contest against several royal navy sailors in a pub in Malta. Out drank them all and arm wrestled them. Then had a heart attack in the aftermath. Crazy way to go out.
Yeah. Dude was a freaking legend.
@@mdavissq3d it's awful he died but damn....that's a legendary way to go out.
He drank 8 pints of German lager, 12 shots of Rum, 1/2 bottle of whiskey and some shots of Cognac, beat five sailors in arm wrestling matches before collapsing from a heart attack.
Sad thing was that he'd managed to cut back on his alcoholism during filming and was pressured into the drinking contest because of his reputation as a hell raiser.
Fun Fact: Commodus in actual history would often dress as Hercules and walk around cosplaying the hero... and he actually did fight in the gladiatorial arena.
However, he was killed in the bath by a wrestler.
Unfortunately, after he died we got the "Year of the Five Emperors" which was a tumultuous time.
Rome went to hell really quick in terms of leadership. I hope in the sequel they touch on how powerful the Praetorian Guard became during the Year of Five Emperors time period.
That's the problem with dictatorships. If you have a great leader the country will prosper and will be way more effective/stronger than democracies. When you have a bad leader though. Ouch
@@cassu6 Yup..you get an enlightened guy who creates the empire or expands it.. then you get his son or sons making a shit of the job by being morons or fighting for the inheritance... so many examples in history... Take the roman Empire... in the III rd and IV th centuries they fought each other for power more then they fought the barbarians or the persians... No wonder they destroyed the empire.
@@cassu6 Too dangerous
Me, tearing up at the end.
Then noticing Calvin with tears down his face too, "Someone, give Calvin a hug!" I said to no one as I'm watching this alone.
Oh, now I want a hug. What a great movie!
My friend Robert made some of the Gladiator armour for this. :) In fact he's now making a ton load of stuff for the sequel, and fyi the original 'spikey' gladiator helmet was made by my friend Ivo.
Your friend did an amazing job 🎉
@@pablolacalle6098 Thanks, he's made armour for a tone load of movies. :)
Gladiator has no sequel. Gladiator needs no sequel.
@@Arrynek01 That is an interesting quote given how that turned out later.
@@Arrynek01there’s a sequal coming same director
Wait what?! There are still people that have not seen Gladiator?!
One of my low key favorite parts about the movie: the Germanic leader gets taken down by random soldiers. Too many movies would just make a long, dramatic boss fight with the main character that pulls you out of the action.
I guess some people Were NOT ENTERTAINED!! 😄
There's people who don't rewatch it every year at least once?
@@L3GIQN "watch again"? Don't mind if I do, streaming service.
Yup. The chances of 2 commanders/generals to even see each other in a battle like this is so unlikely.
nothing made me cry like this movie. still dose after over 20 years. AN ALL TIME CLASSIC
The music is so powerful, it never fails to get me…
For a film that's 23 years old . You'd think it was filmed last year its so good . Holds up so well .
A lot of medical advances made during the Roman Empire originated from surgeons trying to heal gladiators for battle, as Rick said they were the prized assets of wealthy individuals much like a race horses is today.
Exactly and they didn’t die anywhere near as much as we think they did. They also had more luxury’s then most normal citizens and had a good diet and plenty of women
While the popular and famous gladiators died a lot less, there was also way more random slaves just getting blindfolded and thrown in panthers .
This was the first movie I saw in theaters where the crowd applauded when the credits rolled. It had a perfect, cathartic ending and the last song hits at just the right beat to get you in the feels. One of my favorites!
Loved this watchalong with y'all, thanks for this.
Hans Zimmer and Lisa Gerrard's end credits music is truly one for the ages.
Can we just take a moment to appreciate what everyone's wearing? Love the shirts, especially Calvin's jumper
The end with (forgot the guy) where he burys them in the arena sand. That was an improv last-second scene the actor said they should add. So they did. Really worked well for an final scene.
Djimon Hounsou. He's a fine actor too.
Honest Trailers calling the Emperor “Emperor Dumbledore the First” is one of their most clever and also respectful jokes they’ve ever done for their “starring” segment.
Man, Honest Trailers went downhill. They suck now.
@@harold3165 To be fair they were always pretty cringe bottom of the barrel humor
I got distracted by the end but "and then John Cena kills Biden" out of context surely managed to pull me back, haha.
The actress who plays Maximus' wife is Ridley Scott's wife.
Really? She's quite stunning
@@marthapackard8649 He mentioned it ob the directors commentary.
That Chariot bisection is still one of the gnarliest deaths I've ever seen in theatres. When I watched this as a teenager on the big screen everyone in the theatre gave a collective OOOOOOOOOOOH when that happened.
I love how emotional you all are all the time. Really appreciate the honesty!
Fun fact in addtion to Rick's: Commodus and Marcus Aurelius were real people, maximus definitely was not.
Marcus Aurelius is known as the Philosopher King, he was a wise ruler that spent his life in the borders of rome fighting German Barbarians. but he never wanted at any point in time, to give power back to the senate (honestly the senate was usually a bunch of corrupt old men that wanted the power remain with the Aristocracy and not the people)
When Marcus Died (commodus didn't kill him), Commodus basically spent his entire rule not doing what the last 5 emperors before him (who were widely regarded as the best Roman Emperors) did. He spent it spending the Roman treasury for bread and circuses to make the people happy, he spent so much that he was bankrupting the Roman Treasury. he also spent his days in the arena, but there was no danger, he mostly fought animals that absolutely had little to no chance of escaping or harming him. he killed hippos, giraffes, Ostriches, and all sorts of exotic animals.
eventually he was assassinated. and thus the Pax Romana (The Peace inside the borders of the Empire) came to an end. and Rome just steadily went into decline after, it would never reach the same heights that it did during the period of the 5 Good Emperors.
Still crying when I hear the Soundtrack
I saw this when I was 14 in a theater with my dad. It’s my favorite memory from the movies! We were both blown away.
2 parts always get me in this film, which is the ending (obviously) and during the declaration of his name..the speech is good, but the sinister swell of the music always gives me absolute chills. A perfect combination of music and acting.
ARE YOU NOT ENTERTAINED?!
ARE…YOU…NOT… ENTERTAINED?!?!?
If that doesn’t get you amped up nothing will.
Connie Nielsen was extraordinary as Lucilla. Just one look from her face spoke volumes.
I know it sounds like a cliché, but seeing Gladiator for the first time when I was 12/13 had such an impact on me. I wouldn't say it's my favourite film of all time, but it is definitely a huge milestone on my journey of loving movies. After seeing it, I knew that from that point on I would never think about films the same way again. It inspired me to want to learn more about films and filmmaking as a process rather than just enjoying them as mindless entertainment. When people ask me where my love of films comes from, I always tell them that it started with Gladiator.
You have no idea how much this reaction means to me! Still my favourite movie!
I fucking love Gladiator. I always cry. Now, we are free
Rick mentioned that he likes Roman history. Just curious is you guys have seen HBO's series Rome. Its the story of Caesar and Augustus and is an absolute recommendation. It was basicaly what eventually inspired HBO to make Game of Thrones. Tonnes of actors from HBO Rome also played a role in GoT, like Ciaran Hinds, Tovias Mekenzie and Indira Varma. Plus one of the main roles is played by Ray Stevenson, i mean, c'mon any better?
Rome was one the few shows that showed how the romans really fought
@@maybesami4270 sadly only in a very short scene. a shame that you don't really see the battles. But I know they had major budget constraints sadly
@@franzferdinand5810 i actually now cannot remember if any other show or movie showed romans fighting as a unit and not breaking formation immediately and fightin 1 v 1 battles
Best show Ever! Two seasons 11/10
Plus, Kerry Condon!
Aaron writing down Daddy Issues should be a meme
38:49 “HOW CAN HE SLAP?” funniest reference in this video lol
The best opening in cinematic history, still remember when I watched that first scene for the first time...
After you guys had The Last Samurai on the channel, I was hoping Gladiator would come up eventually! Those two films are basically tied for me in my list of favorites.
Really good movies. They just hit home everytime you see them no matter how many times.
@@henrikandreason7261 100%. They have the perfect balance of action, humor, drama, wholesomeness, and a great cast of characters you want to root for or love to hate. And Hans Zimmer!
I have watched this movie so many times and I still cry. I appreciate that Calvin is getting the feels too. :)
Joaquin Phoenix is such a great actor. I hated him in this, was on the edge of my seat in Joker, and found him so wholesome in Signs
He was SO underrated in Signs. I’m surprised someone mentioned this!
@MisakiLeasim Yup. In Gladiator I wanted him dead, but I would trust him with my life in Signs. Polar opposite characters.
The big blonde guy is German ex bodybuilder Ralf Moeller who won Mr Universe in 1986. he’s also starring in The Scorpion King. He’s a really nice guy!
Greetings from Germany 😁
I've seen this movie hundreds of times, but seeing Calvin cry did me in. Great movie and great reaction by this crew!
This was my first rated R movie, and it stands up in my top 10 to this day.
My favorite line: "The time for honoring yourself will soon be at an end." The self-control he showed in that moment was amazing!!!
34:15 - Some of the greatest lines ever spoken in movies
4:05 this scene is quite funny if you know Brazilian Portuguese, because he speaks in Germanic yes, BUT it sounds like “É assim que meu fusca andaaaaa” which roughly translates to “That’s how my VW beetle rides”
Thanks for coming to my useless Ted talk of the day
One of the best movies of all time!!!!! Are you not entertained?!!! And the soundtrack is so❤❤❤
@d wood what you mean? It's not the best movie of all time but for sure it's up there of one of the best, the story ,the performances of all , the custumes and set design the music it's a 9/10 for me so its one of the best movies of all time. And the ending gets me everytime and I seen it like 20 times already or so.
Rick just earned + 100 respect from me. I’m from Italy and he knows way more about my country’s history than me. Fucking legend 💪🏻
I laughed when Rick said they didn't use the pilum in the opening battle. He's a big history dork like me and thought the same thing.
My respect for Rick is already maxed out, but I agree. He’s the best.
Always fun to watch along with you guys, even better when it's a great film! Kudos to Rick for his historical insights, and the guaranteed serotonin that your reaction videos give me! This soundtrack will be in my head all day now - and I'm fine with it!
23 years later and it is still my favorite movie. My favorite scene is right before the first match when the gladiators are paired up to fight and Proximo delivers the speech about meeting their end so that they may be remembered as men. And then watching Maximus after the speech get ready to fight by performing his prefight ritual of putting soil in his hands and rubbing them together understanding that its time to get down to the get down. Great reaction guys! Appreciate your channel!
Hans zimmer's soundtrack in this movie is so beautiful
The "podium" of the Colosseum had an amazing moveable system, you guys should check out a documentary about it.
Talking about the accidental cast members, there's a shot in the war sections at the start where Maximus is interacting with his horse, holding the reins and stroking it etc, and like dead centre shot there's a crew member in jeans trying to hide behind the horse's head because he's got trapped in the middle of the frame 😂
I liked the reference to the 2010 Robin Hood that Calvin made at the start of the reaction. It's certainly no Gladiator, but I like the film for whatever reason as an easy-watcher. I'd enjoy that being in the rotation for reactions if the others/Aaron haven't seen it.
that being said, oscar isaac def chewed up some scenery as the petulant prince john
not sure, would have to watch the behind the scenes commentary again but I think the horse Russel Crowe rides in Robin is the same as the one he rides in the battle scene. Could be real as horses live for approx. 30 years and only 10 years passed between the two movies.
When new people or people from a different shift ask me my name “ My Name is Gladiator” every time 🤘🏽🤙🏽
This is still my favorite movie ever. I still get teary eyed by the end
The end of this move gets me EVERY TIME. The music, "who will help me carry him?" just so good.
The actor from Game of Thrones who played Joffrey he used Jaquin Phoenix performance as a Template
Legendary Film
So many quotable moments in this great film!
Such an amazing CLASSIC!!!! Great lines, characters, story and music!! TOO many cool moments to list!!!
fun fact: filmed mostly in Malta where the sequel is currently in pre production. Massive sets are being put up...
This movie is such the perfect "peplum" classic. Love it. Seen it multiple times and will see it again.
Thank you for your vid as always!
No shame in crying at the ending. It's one of the most emotional endings to a movie that I know of and it's the same here, always gets me.
The strobing slo-mo in the battle scenes is a very Ridley Scott thing. Meanwhile, the changed frame rate to make it look slightly sped up is very much the influence of Saving Private Ryan from two years earlier.
The soundtrack is one of the best soundtracks in film and I continue to regularly listen to it decades later.
Strength and honour.
The actor that played in Man of Steel and the actor that played in The Passion of the Christ they're both in a movie called The Count of Monte Cristo which is really really really awesome movie The Count of Monte Cristo
Great seeing Richard Harris I forgot he was in this lol. He'll always be my Dumbledore. R.I.P.
He will always be my King Arthur. Yes, I'm that old, lol.
It was Lisa Gerrard's vocals in the movie that really teared me up. Lisa Gerrard and Hans Zimmer together scored this movie and it was one of the scores that made me become a huge fan of Lisa Gerrard's music. I highly recommend checking out her music including her projects with Dead Can Dance as one of the main dual vocalists.
Such a finely acted, finely written film with a masterful Directing, Musical score and cinematography to boot...still .remains as my top 3 favorite ever. The acting ensemble is God tier
Fun fact... The Germanic Chant prior to the battle in the Forest is the same one used in the film ZULU.. Zulu was one of Ridley Scotts favourite films so he wanted to pay tribute to it by using the Zulu chant as that for the Germanic tribe ..
They had to use the track from Zulu because the language being used by the extras was to say the least was getting a bit adult with all the excitement.
Aaron's never seen Rocky? LEEEEAAAAAAVVVVVEEEE!
Omid Djalili (the slave trader, also Scarab Guy from The Mummy) is a British comedian of Iranian parentage, and I find his film career absolutely hilarious. He speaks English and looks (and is) totally Middle Eastern, and has managed to sneak a significant career out of playing (in his own words) the "second Azerbaijani oil pipe attendant". Gladiator, The Mummy, James Bond, Pirates Of The Caribbean... he's made it into everything.
Winner of 5 Oscars including Best Picture.
Before Russell Crowe was cast to play Maximus, Hugh Jackman, Tom Cruise, Tom Sizemore, Mel Gibson and Antonio Banderas were considered for the role.
The opening scene was filmed in Surrey England, the gladiator training school was filmed in Morocco and the scenes involving Ancient Rome were filmed in Malta for 19 weeks.
Oliver Reed, who played Proximo, died of a heart attack on May 2, 1999. It was dedicated in his memory.
Russell Crowe sustained several injuries during filming and almost died as a direct result.
The scene where Maximus was fighting Tigris Of Gaul, the tiger almost killed Russell Crowe, but thankfully, he walked away with incident.
It wasn't just Surrey, it was just outside Bracknell, between it and Windsor (of Castle fame), called Caesar's Camp, at the end nearest Bracknell. Some decent offroad biking, not super gnarly, not boring flatness, but quite a place for Mountain Bikes, Motorbike offroading and horseriding.
Some of the soldiers were hires from gyms and so forth, but unbeknownst to us, disguised as an audition for some dating drama thingy, so I missed out on being a soldier.
Lots of people in the medicine tent because they wallped each other with fake swords and cracked bones because they weren't stunties or actors, just regular joes.
Antonio Banderas is actually a Spaniard, lol. I've always liked him. I wonder what he would have done in the role. Russell Crowe was perfect though.
Hell yeah. Didn’t know I would appreciate this reaction happening
I loved this movie when I first saw it. Like Rick, I know some history about the movie and the historical inaccuracy. I'm a history buff and I found out later about it how, Commodus is based on an emperor but not real. That gladiators didn't really fight to the death. They usually fought animals or each other but rarely died. And what people don't really notice, is that there were a few female gladiators though they were rare. But despite all the inaccuracies, I still give high praise to this movie, it's so iconic.
This film is like Braveheart in the historical stuff is questionable but none the less it's still a really enjoyable film.
What was your childhood Aaron, that you haven't seen Cool Runnings? Lol
It's hilarious that Blind Wave has a poll for what movie Aaron hasn't seen. I love it.
Rewatched this movie a few days ago since the sequel is already in pre-production. One thing I thought was how amazing it would be if you guys reacted to it and here we are!
They're doing s sequel? Bad idea. No one will ever be able to touch the role Crowe played. It's an almost perfect movie, if not perfect. Phoenix was brilliant too.
"...Father to a murdered son. Husband to a murdered wife. And I will have my vengeance, in this life or the next" Everything about this film is pure spectacle and it's Ridley Scott at his finest.
the ending couple soundtrack tracks to this movie are just *gorgeous*. for that alone it's a hella classic.
The end always gets me as well. Every time. The masterly written music combined with the depth of the sacrifices of the characters echoes in eternity
the guy who went to stab maxmus at the beginning to kill him, thats also the invisible man in LOEG and he plays marcus in underworld. Good actor
Actually(pushes glasses up) the emperors were called Augustus. When they started having junior emperors to rule alongside them they referred to the junior rulers as Caesar
Calvin is me. I love him.
And Rick's shirt is kickass.
Fantastic movie, saw it for the first time when it first came out on VHS. The score is one of my all time favorite.
Isn’t the shirt the best! I have a black cat so I was like 😍 and Rick told me his daughter bought it for him which makes it all the more cuter!
Glad that Rick pointed out gladiators were pretty much athletes and not cannon fodder for spectacles.
I'm so much like Calvin. Can't not bawl the entire end of the movie.
I love this movie! I think I watched it about 6 times at the movie theater when it was released, I was soooo obsessed 😅 By the way, hello from Brazil, great content as always, guys 😃
LOL - "................... yeah, I hated Commodus" 😆 - Same, to this day still I wish he could have twisted the knife at the end, and still I shed tears as he is reunited with his family
40:55 agree with Calvin, it is the exit of only the greatest badasses
The actress that plays Maximus' wife also played Saladin's sister in Kingdom of Heaven, she is Ridley Scott's wife.
Commodus, was a real Emperor no? Obsessed with gladiator fights and even fought in some. I think he was killed by his trainer who wrestled and strangled him in his bathtub.
Commodus shows from the start just how painfully stupid he is.
While it might be selfishly justifiable to want Maximus dead, it would've been far more beneficial to his position to have Maximus taken out and killed, then claim he was assassinated and martyr him for Commodus' own gain. Say some savage that survived the battle, got him as he was walking the grounds of the camp.
Then, praise him, make him the hero his troops believe he was, give his family special status, and use his name as a rallying cry to bolster support for his claim to the throne.
As it is, had Quintus agreed that Maximus' family would be well-cared for, even given special status (at Commodus' order), he probably would've gone off to his death with no resistance. Commodus CREATED the problem by giving him something to fight for. Had they just promised (and kept the promise) to care for his family and elevate them, he might've just let himself die for their gain. Like killing yourself for the life insurance to help your family.
Commodus was just an idiot. He was kind of terrifying, and extraordinarily dangerous...but very very stupid.
36:00 I’m SO glad Eric mentioned that the score sounded like Pirates of the Caribbean because I thought I was hearing things when I thought it sounded a lot like that score😂 Didn’t know the score for this was by the same composer and that makes more sense now!
Wow, have to say one the few movies I’ve rewatched that is still just as amazing as when I first saw it. All the cast did amazing. Ending is still as powerful as ever.
“A people should know when they are conquered…Would you? Would I?”
Still after so many years , a great film. gets me everytime :)
