I wish to pay compliment to everybody. Francoise was very over-confident and very happy - (which is nice to see from Alexander, I never saw him smile this much before:) Marie was a Queen that wished to be more than she could and died before she could reach it - spoilt by her heritage. Karsh was brutal and loyal and fierce, ready to wage war at his masters command - the perfect hound to have at your side. Vannevar was young, naive and unexperienced, already full of fear that was yet to consume him completely. Suzanne was beautiful in all sense of the word, gentle, sensitive and kind - ready to learn new secrets from the world of night she knew so little at that point. Lucita was intimidating, ruthless, professional and in control. Jason Carl was fantastic as he always is - perfectly balancing the storytelling, the different characters and their voices and the unexpected results that might occur from rolling dices. Well done everyone and Thank you for this 'way back when' adventure:)

So I thought it neat to see that their dynamic seems to always have been like that, regardless of these things.
Also, tbh I'm not sure how consensual it is in this case. Suzanne seems just to want to help in a way, but it's hard to say what Vannevar is thinking. Especially in the modern nights, since he's so confused. So I wouldn't know if he feels like he's being used by her or what.

It's actually cool to see how he grew up to be a more powerful vampire, but it's clear he still lacks self-steem and is terrified of what unlife is.

@Jimmy Jazz Depends on what you mean by "famine" . en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_famines lists ONE in 1709 but it mentions at the time a source for eleven famines in the 18th Century . the link for this however ( French department of agriculture ) is a dead link. I found the link
      www.agriculture-environnement.fr/2009/05/04/ah-le-bon-vieux-temps-des-disettes
and will correct the Wikipedia entry. the source quoted is Fernand Braudel, but no actual eighteenth century dates are given except 1709, although he gives five nineteenth century dates.
and the source says « Supposez que ce relevé soit complet et fiable (ce dont je doute), il laisse de côté les famines locales, et celles-ci, très fréquentes, surviennent presque chaque année, ici ou là », ajoute Fernand Braudel, qui note qu’avec « l’effroyable disette »
Which 1) doubts the reliability of the historical surveys and 2) mentions "local famines"
Ill go along with you though and offer a comparison . In Ireland you had the globally historically known "Great hunger" of 1845-47" and a century earlier in 1740 one probably as large in scope which hardly anyone mentions as few histories of it exist in the literature. these were country wide famines due to crop failure. the great Hunger was complicated in that it was a severe winter with rare snow several feet deep causing people to become isolated indorrs and then in the sporing to flee weak and sick to towns and cities causing mass epidemics; as well as political issues such as an unwillingness by English overlords to distribute food supplies as soaring market prices provided tempting profits elsewhere.
But there were several regional crop failures about one a decade in the early 1800s in Ireland.
I would make a similar distinction to Braudel and I was goin by another wikepedia entry on let them eat cake
"there were no actual famines during the reign of King Louis XVI and only two incidents of serious bread shortages, which occurred, first, in April-May 1775, a few weeks before the king's coronation (11 June 1775), and again in 1788, the year before the French Revolution. The 1775 shortages led to a series of riots, known as the Flour War, la guerre des farines, a name given at the time of their occurrence, that took place in the northern, eastern and western parts of France. Letters from Marie Antoinette to her family in Austria at this time reveal an attitude totally different to the Let them eat cake mentality."

Hi, French viewer, here. Very cool and unexpected episode. Small detail, tho : It should have been François Villon. Françoise with a final "E " is a woman's name. Pronouce France-Wah for a man, and France-waz for a woman.
Also, major nitpick there, but being from noble descent, it should have been Suzanne 'de' Rochelle, or 'de la' Rochelle.

    • @VerticalBlank
      @VerticalBlank Před 4 lety +47

Yes it is 'François Villon' in the books, complete with cedilla, so that's a straight-up typo. You could imagine that Suzanne might have dropped 'de la' in modern nights so as to be less conspicuous, and this may have coloured her memorium. As Jason said, it's an imperfect recollection.

And not destroy each other by saying nasty things we are talking hundres of ways to supernaturally reduce humans and even other supernatural beings to anything from hideous monsters to plain dust!
Oddly enough you remind me of an old child Psychologist I knew described a similar therapy. Say you have a child in school who is always disrupting the class by standing up and walking round their seat. You then give this behaviour to them as a task they have to do possibly as a precondition to ask a question or as a reward when they answer one.
When a negative disruption like this becomes a positive controlled chore they may end up abandoning it as a negative disruption.

There is a hypothesis that Karsh appeared to be less intelligent than he was to manipulate everybody.
That he was seen as just a warrior and nothing more, an almost indestructible war machine that only served to fight (Protean 8, Celerity 7, Fortitude 7).
But in the shadows he acquired power and influence. Not only in the Camarilla in which he obtained the # 2 position but also with another alias (alan-Aajav) in the Sabbat where he was also #2.

I'm a relatively new viewer. My only experience is the bloodlines video game and watching this series. I just wanted to say I have newfound respect for all of these people as actors. This episode in particular has been an absolute joy. I'm not a huge Annabelle fan as I think she is a hypocrite, talking about consent but taking it from others, stirring the fire of rebellion with no plan, and using Victor's resources to solve problems she creates. But to see her play a completely different character gives me so much admiration for her skills. I would love to see more historical episodes that allow these talented people a chance to demonstrate their abilities.

I love seeing every new character these actors step into, especially Erika! Marie is such a complete 180 from Annabelle, and she plays her so well! Its also so interesting to see Bryan and Amelia play the same characters centuries younger, in a completely different world. Their quiet, revering wonder and awe at Francoise is such a great contrast to their current, arrogant and overextended selves. Its like BossALKENO says, Vannevar couldn't learn from Francoise's mistakes, and once again history will repeat (that is, if our coterie comes out of this victorious)
