Asparagus (Asparagus officinalis), also known as "špargl", is a type of monocotyledonous plant from the Asparagaceae family.
In the Czech Republic, the most suitable conditions for its cultivation are in Mělník. Here it is also on an area of approx. 150 ha in Hostín near Vojkovic. Historically, it was grown mainly in Ivančice in Moravia, from where it was also supplied to the imperial court in Vienna. Now in Ivančice, the tradition is maintained only symbolically, and Czech asparagus from Mělnick is available at local traditional asparagus festivals.
People enjoyed the delicate taste of asparagus before our era, but at the same time, thanks to its properties (especially diuretic, i.e. diuretic) they used it as a medicine.
The first to describe the effects of this vegetable as healing and purifying was the ancient physician Galen in the second century AD. He was then joined in the following centuries by other experts who supported their opinions with a number of scientific studies. For example, they have shown that asparagus is an excellent low-calorie source of folate and potassium. Its stems contain a high percentage of natural antioxidants. “Asparagus provides essential nutrients: six sprouts contain 135 micrograms of folate, which is almost half of the recommended daily allowance for an adult, 20 milligrams of potassium.
Research shows that folate is the key to taming homocysteine (folic acid is also important for pregnant women because it protects the mother's fetus against nervous system disorders). Studies have shown that people who died of Alzheimer's disease had extremely low or zero folate levels, other research suggests that high levels of potassium in the body can reduce calcium loss. Green asparagus in particular is also a good source of vitamin C. Vitamin C helps produce and maintain collagen in the body, the basic building block of connective tissues.
"Asparagus has long been recognized for its rich medicinal properties", wrote D. Onstad, author of The Great Food Guide. "Asparagus contains substances with diuretic properties, neutralizing ammonia, which causes us fatigue, and protecting small red blood vessels from bursting. Thanks to the fiber, it also has laxative effects."
This is also confirmed by the author of "Heinerman's new encyclopedia of fruits and vegetables: "Boiled asparagus and the juice squeezed from it very well dissolve uric acid (which causes gout) which is deposited in the limbs. Asparagus is especially used for high blood pressure, when the amount of sodium in the blood far exceeds the amount of potassium. Cooked asparagus also increases intestinal evacuations. In addition, the water in which the asparagus was boiled can also work to cleanse the skin if used regularly every morning and evening.'
