When the new engine comes in, you should do another recorded teardown to see if there are any issues with it.

@@SammyNail Do it enough times you'll get enough parts for a working engine!
and than put it in a mx5
That's brutal quality control. A regular consumer isn't getting a free replacement engine.
Im sure if it was purchased from a reputable dealer it has warranty. I know for a fact Chevrolet performance has a limited warranty coverage.
@@creverett9ya but I think it would be really hard to argue that the engine broke due to their issue and not something you did to it. Like no break in period etc etc no oil blah blah. It probably would have broken pretty soon after engine start due to the wrist pin missing but who knows what else it would have taken with it when it dies.
Then again, some regular consumers aren't gonna bother taking apart a supposed to be brand new racing crate motor.
@@warnabrotha95YTwell yea obviously not since it's brand new, no actual reason for your average Joe to tear it apart for funzies, terrible quality control lol that's why American is trash nowadays
@@creverett9 yeah warranty never means "a brand new engine on top of the one you have" duh
"They didn't even test fire it?"

The first thing you need to do with the next engine is tear it down and look for problems!
Then, after the truck project is done, use both crate engines in a new HI / LOW project where you start with identical engines instead of identical cars.
This is an awesome idea and this comment should have more likes! That would be interesting to watch!
i love this idea
This I would thoroughly enjoy.
Absolutely this
great idea
Cripes, you bought the Friday 4:30pm end of shift engine. "Beers ain't getting any colder...fuck it, ship it"
Never buy anything made on a Monday or a Friday.
You only need to look at surgery mortality rates by days of the week. If you have surgery booked for a Friday - cancel it
I've heard getting one built on a Monday is a problem too. Everyone is hungover from the weekend lol
@@aquacruisedb Counterpoint: My family needs money...
Nah, it's just a GM engine. The american auto unions destroyed any and all quality american cars had.
They're sending you an entire extra engine because of those issues? You get to keep the old one? Is that what they'd do for people without CZcams channels? Because that would be some wild customer service
i doubt they did for normal customers. normal customers probably put it into there cars, add a power adder like nos or turbo or super charger and then boom, all warranties are canceled and it was your fault. if you kept it NA and it dropped a rod it would most likely get inspected and or sent out or back at the owners expense to see what happened but then GM could really say anything if they wanted
Don't get your hopes up. Nobodies without media presence don't get preferential treatment like that because they can do way less PR damage than a youtube channel.
The bad press of a poor warranty process being turned into a youtube video would cost them WAAAAY more than $15k
I'd imagine they have the complete teardown recorded as well so there's enough evidence for GM to correct the mistake. Otherwise I think they would tell you "Kick rocks Dirt"
More curious if the employee got a little pink notice in his locker at GM.😅
idk this is pretty bad on GMs part. Bad bearings and forgetting something on the wrist pin are pretty huge mistakes. I think the way Donut was able to get a new motor out of it is because they properly documented the mistakes that GM made so there is basically zero wiggle room for GM.
I have a 1971 VW Bug project and ordered an engine built from a "reputable" shop here in Arizona. The engine was supposedly brand new, 0 miles. I didn't get to run it until a year after I purchased it. During this year gap, the shop closed "due to Covid". When I finally ran the engine, it blew up after about 15 minutes of running. Turns out the builder forgot to install the circlips on one of the pistons.
i feel for you brother.... this is why we cant have nice things
That's CRAZY. Those aren't just "issues", this engine would destroy itself real quick if you just decided to run it without checking.
Right, no wrist pin circlip = catastrophic engine failure 🤯
This is insane. When the video started, I was thinking "there's no way I'd take apart a freshly build engine that was done by professionals". After what you found, I'd be measuring the bores, getting a straight edge on the deck and heads, checking the ring gap, and weighing each of the pistons. And I'd do the same on the new engine too. Excellent video, please do keep us updated on anything else you find, and the same with the new engine too.
make sure that thing is perfect for sure
lol right? This is insane!!!
And making sure the cam shaft and crank shaft are the correct measurement and have correct weight distribution. Also making sure the valves seal, hell I wouldn't be surprised if some of the bolts they took off weren't torqued properly.
Look at all the subdivisions getting condemned and torn down after being built by "professionals."
People are getting lazy these days.
Doubt they'll do an in depth update
gotta love the kind of customer service you get when you are a social media company
"mmh yes syre we will ship ANOTHER engine your way"

LT1 Buick Roadmaster represent! Bulletproof engine. The Corvette had the same, and the impala.
Holy hell. GM better be watching this! Missing wrist pin clip and bearing chewed up, thats insane on a 15k drop in package.
They already called GM telling them about the problems and are getting a new engine for free. So I'm sure it was brought up what was missing and wrong
@@redneck94chevy brother you replied to a bot stealing comments.

The whole fleet will have an LSX in no time!
Infinite engine hack!
Love how they are giving you a new engine to clean up after their tracks, hoping you guys wouldn't release the footage. Well done for not holding back! Informed the public of a possible easy money tactic since race motors blow up all the time and they'd get away with the premature engine failure without being questioned. Now they have got to pull up their socks, at least momentarily.
I don't know about hoping they woudln't release the footage, they are just doing the best they can to make them "whole" without question. Giving you a new one doesn't leave any room for doubt. I guess you're hoping for them to announce that they failed over loudspeakers? It would be nice if they said something about it being unacceptable and how they're going to improve QC.
I worked for the detail department at a GM dealership and the amount of brand new vehicle's that come in with issues are astonishing! One in particular was a brand new Yukon, price tag was like $112k. As i was cleaning it for delivery i found a quarter sized hole in the lower portion of the passenger door. At the assembly plant they just threw on a door that was suppose to have a trim option, but never installed the trim so the holes for the trim were exposed to the elements. Should have seen the look on the salesman face when i told him about it. Customer had already been waiting 6 months for it, within an hour the customer was there and eventually said they didn't want the Yukon anymore.
Yowch... That customer must've been pissed to no end!
Ive worked at GM and Hyundai. The GMs during PDI were usually not too bad. I think I had to align one once, my buddy had to fix a Camaro Conv top that wouldnt open, and some Tahoes that had the wrong modules in the seat. That was about it. Hyundai OTOH, that was a weekly ordeal finding one that didnt have a QC issue. Clamps not properly on hoses being a major one for awhile. Seen a few that had bent pins in harnesses, so whole CAN systems were down. Had a GV80 3.5 that they didnt drill the hole for the boost recirculation valve. That one was bad.
@@bambootherainwing8070 As they should be. If they can't sell you a whole ass brand new $112k whip. They can be stuck selling it (and not fixing the trim anyways)
@@AgentLokVokun lol
@@AgentLokVokun Unfortunately issues can arise at a later time, especially drivetrain issues. We had our ‘16 Yukon Denali get deemed a lemon 2 years ago, heads, camshaft, valves etc. were replaced or repaired 3 times under warranty within 4 years of owning it.
Got a lawyer and GM owned up about those parts all having issues in the 6.2L LS specifically. Got a good chunk of money back but now we have an SUV that we can’t in good conscience sell to someone. So we drive it sparingly just waiting for the valves to start ticking again lol
Honestly just keeping the new LSX on standby for parts that will break on the ranger is probably be the wisest and most financially beneficial move
This is donut. There's no such thing as financially beneficial moves
Put it in Jerry's catfish Camaro
@@theonlyever didn't know he had one, never been brought up in a video
My initial thought was they should throw it in the money pit Miata, but this makes more sense. Of course we don't watch Donut for sensible decision making so I'm voting for a swap.
If they had gone with a coyote they wouldn't even have to worry about this issue
Here is a build for you and it’s one I’ve been wanting to do.
Put the LSX in an Infiniti M45x S. You get a big body V8 Japanese luxury vehicle with all kinds of bells and whistles and an ATESSA AWD system. With some work you can make it an ATESSA ETS system and you will have one hell of a vehicle. Legendary LS engine married to the legendary ATESSA ETS in a Japanese big body… what could be better?
It’s unique and hasn’t been done before. These cars fly right under the radar.
Are you slow? Definitely wouldn't work without major ecu problems
@@bitchesihate Are you? What major swap doesn’t encounter major electrical issues?
No shit it’s gonna be hard.
I love these engine teardown videos that you are doing. Honestly makes working on engines a little less intimidating
GM dropped the ball on that assembly
Dropped it in the shaft, probably.
'murca at it's best
Apparently 15'000 isn't enough to ask for quality product these days.
Not surprised
What gets me is you KNOW that engine was gone over special since its a business deal with Donut.
If they can't even get a good motor, what are you and I going to get?
I’m a ford tech and I can confirm that brand new engines come in with problems all the time. Especially with timing. These new engines are built on production lines that the manufacturers keep going at full speed and these problems happen all the time. The problem is that the manufacturers found that it’s cheaper to warranty the new engines than slow down production for a better product. It just kind of sucks for us….
Yeah, my last car had one serious recall for the oil pump, due to the blades which had the potential to break off and end up starving the engine of oil. I imagine with American cars that are famous for being poor quality it's not entirely uncommon to see some with assembly mistakes 😅
It's crazy there is not even quality control for a buffed performance engine.
I am a Mercedes tech and can confirm it is no different here. I was actually coming here to say the same thing.
Manufactures have 2 options, build quick and just replace components that fail due to bad manufacturing with out blinking an eye, or take the time to build things properly but require insane in depth investigation when something does fail. Either option is frustrating for consumers but then again when has any person been happy to bring their car in for service.
It's pretty much that way in any corporate-ran workplace these days. If they have to choose between quantity and quality, they'll always choose quantity, especially if it means cutting the least bit of profit. I mean, how else are the CEOs going to afford their 3rd vacation home on a private island?
yikes! @jacobtuner9073 Is there a particular engine that is worse than others? I expected factory engines to be near perfect, especially when it comes to timing ! I would be so bummed if my brand new Coyote started up backfiring, popping and banging. I would assume it was my own mistake, thanks for the heads up!
The pushrod is not coming in contact with the camshaft. It sits in the lifter which is coming in contact pushing the pushrod. Y’all left that out in your description at the beginning of the video.
Its donut quality work right there
@2:19 it is an overhead Valve engine, Jerry. YEAH, JERRY!

Why would you pull a period correct hemi out of the chrysler?
Wow. If you guys had installed it, fired it up, and blown it up, you would have been screwed. This severely undermines the confidence you get when you buy a crate engine, let alone from the manufacturer. I realize that mistakes happen, but damn. I'm stunned.
It would still be covered under warranty but it would be wasted time for sure.
Crate engines usually have a short warranty
Usually like 12 months and if you turbo it or supercharge it you better make sure they specifically stated the engine is meant for it or theyll tell you to pound sand@Blue_Flame_Raptor
@@spadeykins9114 Good luck providing blown engine was manufacturer fault..
There wasn't a mistake made....... There were MISTAKES made!
That's unacceptable!
Then add the fact THAT is what you get for 15 grand!! (There should have been 10 grand cash in the intake ports for that price!)
That push rod hitting the floor sounded like the intro to Fire Starter....BOOM!!! (3:21)
My buddy got a brand new crate engine for his 04 GTO, his alao had deep scratches / marks in several areas of the interior of the engine.
These engine teardowns are always my favorite. In depth but still simple for my dumb brain to understand
Agreed, I think they should take the new engine and do another teardown. Always inspect before you expect
What gets complicated for me is, trying to visualize & understand automatic transmissions with all the planetary gears & maze of directional fluid routes all the fluid goes in the worm trays & elsewhere to make it work & properly shift gears. Just the torque converter itself is sheer genius. Using literally nothing but fluid to connect the engine to the transmission. AKA no mechanical part/connection is used. Just fast spinning transmission fluid & centrifugal force.
Highly recommend buying a book or two, they are all basically the same for motors but will focus more on one or the other types depending on brand. For example, I got a John deere engines book and read through that, then rebuild my first straight 6 diesel no issues
Engines are very easy to understand
@MoloneLabe Obviously not if there's a huge mechanical business profiting off people that cannot understand it
Watching Nolan become such an awesome host and always being kind, I think he deserves the LSX in the Imperial
he bought it for the 383, unlikely he will swap it out.

You guys should do a Replacement for Displacement series where you take a turbo engine and try to match power with the LSX. Then you could do a side by side comparison of the finished cars and a showdown. Really put to rest the age old argument.
This is a fun idea
But there isn't a replacement. Slap that same turbo on the lsx and see what happens. XD

Glad you took apart this engine.
I worked at Caterpiller for a year in one of their engine assembly factories
Someone forgot a clip like that on one of the C18s. When it went to hot test the piston head came loose and chunks of the piston ended up blowing through the engine block.
Ever since its been the main example for every new employee to teach that the smallest detail can lead to drastic effect
Needed to disassemble and reassemble a old diesel I4. Looks fairly simillar but yet totally different, pretty fun to see actually!
Was it before or after you out the engine together that you guys did all that firewall grinding and cutting right at the throttle body opening on the ranger? Just wondering at what point you guys also dusted the engine?
GM sending out bad parts??? WHAT A SHOCK!
Got to keep the rep up!
They have been known for flawed creates for well over 10 years! (I'm not a Chebby guy so I don't know the history more than that.... Wouldn't surprise me)
unfortunately every brand sends out bad crate motors. it depends on your luck really
I had to replace knock sensors in my 5.3 LS twice do to bad GM sensors. That was cool.
What’s inside a 15,00 dollar motor? About 3500 dollar in parts 😂
Ok genius make an engine for 15,000 that’ll outperform that.
Totally how design, manufacturing and assembly works.
As well as some parts that are engineered differently to typical LS engines for greater strength. Hence why it’s an LSX.
Find me an LSX454 for 3500💀
@@lamp7746 I can give you a dozen on ebay that have more performance out of the box for 5k or less. 7.4L NA pushrod making 476hp is a joke. The real reason you buy this is forced induction setups. If you want an engine that can make 1000hp without internal parts then I think LSX is a very good option.
These two together is the last of old donut, dont ever take this away from us.
Bonus LSX should go in something small and/or dumb, Miata, Pinto, gremlin, triumph, or mid engine minivans can also be dope.
10:15 The crankshaft that drives the oil pump might be robust, but the oil pumps on those motors have been known to fail - or at least become anemic. Plus since they're internally mounted, maintenance, diagnosis and repair means your pulling the top half of the motor and the timing cover. Huge PITA when they used to be externally mounted and easily accessible.
Your tear-down is showing that the reputation for being "reliable" or "bulletproof" lies mostly in the block and less in build quality and QA/QC...but of course we knew that 😉. Like the tear-downs, keep it up!
I don't think the oil pump was ever externally mounted. The old-school gen I and II small blocks had the oil pump mounted on the rearmost main cap, which was much more easily accessibly, I'll give you that. They do seem to have been more reliable than the gen III and IV LS pumps as well.
Good to know. Take apart your brand new thing and report the issues to the manufacturer to get a discount that pays for the inspection. Lets go.
What if you take it apart and it's perfect? Now the labor is on you.
When you buy a new engine, you expect the parts of that 15 thousand dollar v8 to all be in good shape lol
What if you take it apart, find out the clip is missing and the bearings are ruined, call GM and because you’re not a CZcams channel they tell you’re lying or you did it. I’d imagine that’s how it would go in 95% of cases
Well, take it apart and show it to 8 million people. GM did a PR move with the free engine.

This channel probably saved my life. Over the past 8 or so months I lost my job, my girlfriend of five years is moving, I became depressed and my relationship with my family became strained or completely broken with some members, then as a final fuck you from life turns out I have colon cancer. I had zero energy to do anything. I had completely given up. Didn’t even eat for days. Or get out of bed. Then one day my cousin gifted me his old 07 Charger out of nowhere. It’s completely fucked. Electrical problems up the ass won’t even start but I’m slowly working on it. Then one day it was somehow okay enough now to go struggling around on solitary midnight rides around town… then suddenly my forgotten childhood passion of cars was rekindled. Next I found this channel donut and I was suddenly back to my childhood days making models or playing with my dozens of hot wheels all with customizations I crudely but passionately made using clay, poster paint, pipe cleaners, parts from other hot wheels, LEGO, anything I could get my hands on. I remembered playing fast and the furious with my toys and all the storylines and narratives and the made up jargon I used to sound legit. I remembered how cars were the beginning of my interests in engineering, robotics, chemistry, and technology. I kept watching donut videos and having so much fun I was able to get out of bed to go see if I can work on the Charger, make plans for it, try to drive her or simply just be an actual human again. I’m still low key fucked and so is the Charger. lol but for the first time in long time I have hopes and dreams and I’m finding meaning and purpose in my life. Even if it’s in something as simple as remembering to eat or getting out of bed. Or something more grand like my dream of having my Charger running and looking like a BEAST. I’m living life again. I have energy and motivation again. So from the bottom of my heart. Thank you.
Inspiring stuff dude. This channel always motivates me to work on my projects too lol. Keep your head up and get that charger going

It is pretty embarrassing.
Is GMs engine manufacturing as badly organized as Boeing?
I'm guessing it is because they're Donut. GM knows they need to appear like they go above and beyond with mistakes to ensure that people are confident in continuing to buy LSX engines. It's because of the publicity.

And is a good way to get backup engines for the race truck. 2ND..The second engine that is sent film another inspection tare down if happens again ask cor the repairs cost and have them pay thl for the 3rd engine. Repeat the steps till you get perfect engine or they refuse to send more engines to keep you happy.
This is at least third video of you guys disassembling engine i've seen on this channel. When will you post a video of putting things back together? Start maybe with hayabusa....
You guys were cursed by the Ford Gods, for the sin of dropping in a Chevy engine.
Great video! Shows the importance in a teardown even on a crate engine.
Saved yourselves an arm and a leg trying to get it replaced after installing it and testing...
For the new engine install it as a dyno engine to test out clutches by showing us how slipping the clutch effects the parts / the difference between the different stage clutches out there?
Now that's a brilliant idea, I too would like to see this. I vote for this!
heres a thought
take apart the second lsx and see if it has anything misssing and if there is than they will give you another engine
and repeat
but that 2nd engine in a 1st gen tacoma or a 1st - 3rd gen 4runner 4x4 it would be crazy🤘🏽
Putting it in a Miata, basically a V8 Miata MX5 build, would be nice.
Glad it happened to you guys and not a random person to findout the hard way
I think you should install the other LS X in my black on black 1979 Trans Am. You can have the low mileage, hot rodded 454 that’s in it now to put in some Japanese import one of you guys undoubtedly own.
I just love your videos, been watching donut since I was 10. Love from Bangladesh. Keep up the great work and keep inspiring us more more. Love your work.
Never been here this early! Maybe should swap an lsx into my car... Or maybe just fix the lifter tick in the current motor...
Fix the lifters! While you’re in there might as well port the heads and do a cam too 😉
@@JGMochey "Well, since it's apart..." 🤣🤣
@@tommyw.7850might as well and since you’re already there just replace the injectors they can get a little clogged
@@tommyw.7850 that’s always been my excuse! Wife hasn’t found a flaw with that thinking yet!
Who cares that you are early…
GTI RWD LS conversion!
Do a fwd to rwd conversion
“Think of how big a hotdog this could hold” honestly a restaurant in an old gas station who’s baskets are head covers would be fucking sick
Do an exomotive exocet build with the LSX, that would be right up Donut's alley
