It looks like aluminum. My grandmother and mother used them on the dining room table to set down hot casseroles, meat platters, etc. so the finish on the table would not be damaged...pre polyurethane, or whatever tables are protected with these days. Often the hot plates were backed with cork as insulation.

The shiny thing at 15:40, if it feels like thin foil on cardboard, is a late 60s/early 70s trivet.

Always fun to "shop" with you! Unfortunately, I have to stop/start the video when I'm with a patient, so I find myself rewinding a lot to recall what you are referring to...Haha!! Your lessons DO sink in :) Thanks again!!

I am a sucker for glass items and my eyes catches them all of the time. I see the green and amber glass left behind and I cry. I have a huge personal collection of those. That clear glass bird was cute too.

I love cake stands and use them in my home decor all the time. I rarely use them for cake. 😬

03:26 It's not Puritan, but _Purinton_ . Purinton Pottery incorporated in Ohio in 1936, and moved to Shippensville, PA in 1941. They produced many hand-painted designs reminiscent of Franciscan ware, which were sold through chain stores. Purinton were really hung up on good quality, which unfortunately ran their costs up. Competition from foreign manufacturers led them to close in 1959.
Finding a big piece like that platter is uncommon; mostly what you see are small pieces of tableware.
04:22 Jeez … with a tiny refill port like that one, it'd take forever to recharge the grinder, and you'd have peppercorns scattered all over the countertop.
05:00 If it is a bento box, you should do well with it. Bento have been increasing in popularity in the last couple of years.
05:30 Sheer randomness comes to mind.
07:09 A voice in the back of my head is saying "it's Mexican …" Were there any identifying marks on the bottom? (I'm not convinced there were any finials to start with.)
07:28 The person who made it knew something about Plains Native dwellings. My first reaction is Lakota, with Lipan and Penateka also in the running.
15:39 It seems kind of trivet-y, but as you note, not very interesting.
