    I'm curious where the assertion that waiting ~2 minutes for milk is objectively "too long" to leave espresso out. As long as you steam your milk to the proper temperature, it's going to be the majority of what's in the cup anyway so temperature of the final drink shouldn't be an issue.

    the problem with steaming first though is that you need to bring the machines water temp back to 90 degrees down from 130-140 for steaming and that can take some purging of the boiler to get the water temp back down to an acceptable brew temp

    Been getting a little frustrated with my Breville Barista Touch Impress and all of its auto features, and after a noticeable difference in taste from a friends La Spaziale mini Vivaldi, thinking I want to go to a more dedicated set up. Do you think this would be a worth while change (in addition to a quality grinder of course)?

    • @LifestyleLab_
      @LifestyleLab_  Před měsícem

      You're right to include the quality grinder part of this comment, because that's very likely a BIG contributor to the difference in taste you were experiencing (assuming of course using the same coffee)
      The Silvia is a great machine, absolutely rock solid. However, I would urge you to also consider the Gaggia Classic EVO and the Profitec GO which I think offer better packages for the money. The Gaggia will be the same as the Rancilio if you're just doing espresso (steam arm isn't my favourite) and the Profitec is a nice step up in terms of build quality, AND integrates a PID for not a HUGE jump in price

    • @LifestyleLab_
      @LifestyleLab_  Před rokem +1

      This is sort of like asking if air conditioning is needed in a car. Nice to have, but you could also just open the windows
      As you can see, many very popular machines like this one do not have a PID, but rather on constant temperature. You cannot adjust temperature higher or lower, and you’ll want to flush the group for a second or so before brewing to remove any overheated water.

    Whats your suggestions or advice on Rancilio Silvia & Breville barista pro?

    • @LifestyleLab_
      @LifestyleLab_  Před 2 lety +1

      Do you have enough budget to pair the Rancilio with a good quality grinder? You need to factor that in. The final cost of that system will likely be almost double the Barista Pro, but it will be able to produce better quality espresso, and have better longevity. The Barista Pro has slightly less steaming power, but it transitions between brewing and steaming almost instantly.

    To anyone considering buying this thing - I have had it for a while and here are a few remarks:
    - Don't use the steam wand, rather buy a simple milk foaming device on a side if you need to do milk drinks. The heating and cooling down part is annoying in the long run. If milk foam is really needed rather consider a dual boiler machine.
    - As it is widely used there are a lot of service shops and also there is a tunning available for it. Like the PID or different/aftermarket parts.
    - The water matters, don't use hard water. It will damage the boiler and you are looking for 150€ repair. You can buy a cartridge for it or use water in bottles.
    - I was experiencing issues if I closed the valve for the hot water before turning the hot water off with the switch. First turn switch it off and then close it using the wheel.
    - You need a good grinder, this only pushes water, if you put sh*t in you will get it on the other end out. Having a good grinder is more important.
    - It is impractical in multiple ways. The drip tray, you don't know your water level, it is not heating the cups sufficiently, etc. But it is a good starting machine.
    - Would I buy it again if this one breaks? No, I'd rather buy something better, but this was good starting point.

    I am not sure whether I will replace my 12-year-old Silvia with another. I would hate the European automatic switch off. I would always be concerned about rust developing. I would really like a factory-installed PID. On balance, I think that my mind now moves away from Silvia.
