Zebra Mixed Media Painting and My Thoughts

- Hey friends!!!
I did this little mixed media Zebra painting because it's the animal that doesn't quite fit in to its environment visually. I'm sure that many of us feel that way about ourselves as well. However, it's far more important to feel like we belong than to fit in. When we have to try to "fit in" in order to be accepted, it usually requires sacrificing something of our true selves. Whether it's buying a pair of skinny jeans even though they cut off the blood flow to your feet or in the case of creating art, trying to emulate what's trending on Instagram in order to get likes. I have met people who don't even know what they actually enjoy doing because they have spent so many years trying to fit in with a certain kind of crowd. They've completely lost their own identity in the process.
Being authentic isn't always easy, but it's the most honest and rewarding way to live. People won't always like you, but the ones that do, will like you for who you really are not who you are pretending to be.

I am almost 60 now. I embraced my weirdness in high school. I already knew from the past school experiences that I was different, not popular. I gave myself permission to express myself through style. I wore some crazy stuff. I called it high fashion. I live in the rural south, therefore anything out of the ordinary stood out. I still love high fashion and I have a new love, colored hair dye! All that said, I finally have reached the time of I dont care if you like my art. It is so freeing. A breath of fresh air in my art world. I have painted over the years but now I set aside life to paint instead of the other way around. I love your work and techniques. Very inspiring.
Lydia, you sound so much like my 18 yr old granddaughter. She has proven to be the sweetest, kindest person I know. And coincidentally, she, too, is very artistic. You both have beautiful spirits and this whole entire world is much better off having the two of you in it.
Oh Zebra daughter! You have always had more courage than the average person to go your own way and be authentic! As the proud misfit mother of same, you know I understand. Such a great point about not every piece of artwork will appeal to every viewer...so many times in life even us misfits will try to conform to the accepted “norm”...and we’re not good at that! Bravo to you for continuing to experiment with your art and to pass your techniques on to others. So proud that you are you. Love the painting!!
Thank you mom!!!❤❤❤
Awwwwww❤❤❤
Super video and painting. You make it very hard to compliment your work because you don't ever suck, so all the good words get used and then I feel like I'm just endlessly repeating "wow" or "stunning"... I particularly love the white stripes being highlighted or replaced by the turquoise and red, it's stunning (see, I'm repeating myself). All Hail the Misfits. I think they're the people most worth knowing.
All hail the misfits indeed!!! Thank you Mary!!!❤❤❤
Thank you for sharing your story. I’m sure it resonates with so many others, including myself! I’m 62 and have been crafty my whole life, but in the last 2 years have come to realize that I’m actually becoming an artist! Yes! I too am a Zebra! I love my new found identity!
Thank you for the encouragement. I didn't realize how much I needed it this morning. No coincidences.
This is the internet at it's best! Wonderful painting and philosophy!
Thank you so much Avanelle!!!❤❤❤
This artwork is one I would love to see on a larger scale, wall mural size.
I also didn't fall into peer pressure as a kid to young adult. I believe the things we dislike about ourselves end up being the most attractive about us to the right person.
The answer you gave the boy in fifth grade wasn't the wrong answer, it was the only answer and he had to figure out how he was going to deal with it. Keep on sharing your art and thoughts. 💐😊
So true, always been a misfit too, and am happy within myself and have friends that accept me for whom I am. Don't ever change Lydia, your art is awesome
Thank you Annette!!!❤
rock your weird - thats my motto and it serves me well - Art breaks boundaries and transforms the world - keep going - you are an inspiration
Ohhhhh such true words. Then I am a misfit too, I guess ... Now years later I am ok with that! It brought me a lot of lessons in life.
I love yoh being you and paint what ever you like. Keep it up ❤
Thank you Jolanda!! 💖💖💖
Nobody can be you but you and will show in your art. Love your zebra piece.
Thank you❤
Your narrative is so f**g cool. Thanks. Still watching and listening.awesome authentic piece too!!
Very wise and very true on your comments on fitting in and that creativity is not doing what is trending or copying someone else. This is difficult for many, and I'll even say most, because humans tend to follow and not lead. Your art is unique and beautiful, and kudos to you for not conforming, being your creative self, and speaking boldly about it. Every person has been created with their own talents, and it takes work to resist trends and tap into your own creativity. I love that you used the zebra for this piece. 👍❣
Many thanks! You are so right about humans tending to follow and not lead. I think a lot of trends do start out as unique ideas until everyone jumps on the band wagon. ❤
I love your thoughts and your process! Thank you for sharing, Lydia!❤️🌹
Thank you so much Penka!!!❤❤❤
I love that painting Lydia it’s very ‘you’ .
I can really identify with you what you talked about being a 5’10 ‘ girl in school in England I was considered so Un cool and as I painted my own shoes and distressed my own jeans ( in the 70’s) I was really thought of as weird but I always loved creating my art!
Thanks for your honesty and your amazing art !
Margot
Margot, I totally would have thought you were cool! I think the misfit kids of the world make pretty awesome adults! Thank you!❤❤❤
I absolutely adore you , I totally understand every word you spoke …. You inspire me and I hope at some point I too can inspire you……. THANK YOU YOU ARE LOVELY!!!
YOU ARE LOVELY!!!❤❤❤ Thank you so very much! Your comment has inspired me and it means so much🙏😊
Ditto! I never fit the mold so I never had to deal with peer pressure. Actually, if I see it happening to others I try and help them realize who they are authentically is best, like you did with this talk. 😃 Great zebra painting! Perfect for the topic! 🖤🦓🤍
Thank you Stephanie!!! I honestly love being somewhat of a misfit.😃 As my mom would say... "misfit and proud!"❤
I really enjoyed this! Please continue being the wonderful and unique person you are.
Thank you!!!💖💖💖
Firstly, this painting is super rad, as are all of the ones I've seen in your videos. The fact that it ties into your story gives it additional cool factor. From one social misfit to another, I really enjoy your imagination, your work, & your presentations. Thank you for sharing these inspiring gifts.
Thank you!!! All of us social misfits should stick together!☺❤
@@lydiabroderick867 Agreed! 😂❤️
Hello from Canada We are all bit weird in our own way. I never really fit in either. Thank you for sharing Now I'm in Menopause and I don't really care about having friends, fitting in, if it's not in my paint room well... except my grandboys lol
Here here!!! Fitting in is vastly overrated! I'd rather be comfortable being me! ❤❤❤
I see many similarities in our growing up experiences and personality traits. Here's to accepting our misfit-ness and letting it shine in our art.
You are so right! I feel the same way. ❤️ Absolutely beautiful painting! Love it😍❤️
Thank you so much Soraya! ❤😊

I loved this video, the painting is awesome and the pep-talk was exactly what I needed today.😃
Thank you Kelly!! I'm so glad!😊
Great chat! I'm so with you on that...I've never fit in and, rightly or wrongly, I'm okay with that. Actually, I think that many people 'liked ' me because it gave them permission to simply 'be' themselves...and I've never lacked for friends.
Your words are inspiring and your Art…….well, pretty explanatory AWESOME as usual ❤️
Thank you Joanna!!!❤
Thank you Lydia! I love your videos! You’re amazing!

Absolutely amazing Lydia.I loved your story and teaching during this fantastic artwork session.
Thank you so much Doris!!!❤❤❤
I am a misfit, and I am ok with that. I am also apparently an oddity because being alone is not lonely for me, I like myself and don't mind being alone. I have always not cared what others thought of me. So I celebrate who I am!
😍😍😍
I so admire your talent...what you make from a design where I see nothing...keep up the "misfit". Is there a significance of the number 8?
Thank you Verna! The number 8 has a lot of meanings, but to me it symbolizes harmony and balance.🙂
Completely agree with the entire monologue. Same. Enjoyed the video. Thanks.
