  • This video shows a timelapse of the removal and replacement of the Heating/Cooling element in the High Voltage Battery Compartment of a BMW i3.
    The Technician who performed the work is Ryan Reynolds, one of our Senior BMW Technicians, who had assistance removing the high voltage battery cells from Mark Grayston our Shop Foreman, and Jake Zimmerman another Senior BMW Technician.
    We don't do this service often, so we thought it was a neat opportunity to share what the battery compartment of the i3 looks like.
    Enjoy!

    OMG a battery pack that can be serviced!!!!! This is one of the man reasons I really like the i3. Unlike all Tesla's!

    Hi, great video. What happens after that? The lid goes back on and the battery pack gets refitted, is there anything else? I've heard there is some kind of test possibly called an "end of life" test which must be performed before the battery will operate again? Cheers.

    hi thanks for the video I'm curious was the refrigerant loop leaking or the heater for the battery was defective and I wonder did you ever converted a older I3 battery pack to a bigger newer pack from a wreck car ? I've seen a video form someone in Europe have it done in a BMW dealer.

      In this situation, the original issue was that the compressor for that heating/cooling element had failed. When that happens, BMW recommends replacing both the compressor and the element as a preventive measure.
      As for upgrading the existing batteries to a newer battery pack, we have not done so yet so we cannot speak to the possibility of doing so.

    Why is no leakage test carried out after the Assembly process ?

    Hmm. I wonder how does the reliability or service life of I3 compressors compares to the hermetically-sealed motor-compressor units that have been used in refrigerators and air conditioners for the last eight or nine decades.

    Does the bmw i3 can be used without the main battery? If so i guess some software settings need to be changed right?

    • @david91676
      @david91676 Před 2 měsíci

      I mean BMW i3 rex. So , always using the gas engine to generate electricity to power electric motor only since there's no main battery. Does it still can be used like that on a regular basis?

    My wife and I both have a BMW i3...when the AC is on the compressor is fairly loud and they both sound similar. Im hoping this isnt a common failure and if they do go what are the warning signs and is the compressor itself expensive?

    • @danscar5277
      @danscar5277 Před rokem

      Interestingly, my AC stopped working and I am having BMW looking at it this coming week. I’m hoping the compressor didn’t implode or else it will be disappointingly expensive to repair. I am assuming this is what happened in the video as the tubes were replaced due to particles in them.

      @@danscar5277 What year is your i3? and how many miles on it?

    • @danscar5277
      @danscar5277 Před rokem

      2014 with 26k miles. Owned since new. It’s been a great car, but if major work is needed or loss of car because of the expense- I will feel let down. We also have 2 i3s. One is a 2021 i3s.

    • @craigchamberlain
      @craigchamberlain Před rokem

      My wife’s i3 just had a new AC compressor fitted by BMW today and it cost GBP £2940 including 5 hours of labour. We have owned the car from new and it is a 2017 BEV model with 72k miles on the clock. The AC compressor noise comes from the rear of the car and is much harsher than it was when new. It wasn’t silent when new but the sound was more of a soft “whirring” sound whereas lately it is became a harsh growling noise.
      My advice is to get it checked if you suspect your compressor might be failing because it may get more expensive if it fails completely. I believe it can blow a fuse inside one of the electronics modules and that appears to require the motor to be removed to gain access, adding to the cost.
      Good luck.

    we'd be instantly sacked if we ignored the H&S to this extent. Where's the class 0 gloves? what about doing an absence of voltage check? showing the lack of care on video is a good way to loose custom, it takes 30 seconds to do the necessary checks with PPE to prove it's safe, clearly not been on the IMI course yet.
