Yeah this game love planting things for you like halfway up the field (usually to showcase a new gimmick for a plant or zombie) which usually results in either the plant dying to use its ability or the zombie doing something to insta-kill the plant which is kind of unfair for this type of challenge so I think they shouldn't count as losses for the sake of game balance and giving this challenge a chance. Oh and FYI lawnmowers only respawn during the tutorial levels so don't rely on that to carry you through the game :)

As someone who’s beaten this game, let me tell you a few things you might need to keep in mind for later. Do note that this comment contains spoilers lol.
This game LOVES putting plants near the front, as you saw with potato mine and wall nut. I’d say it’s perfectly valid to not count pre placed plants as deaths. But that’s your call.
I know many people are gonna be put off at the use of Powerups and Leveling. But in my opinion they are fine for this challenge. Sense some levels might be genuinely impossible without them. (Also Gargantuar and Zomboss stages shouldn’t be counted because they are all 99.9% impossible to beat without losing a plant)
The second to last world in this game is called Big Wave Beach. It is a water world where you have to use Lily Pad. In my opinion, Lily Pad shouldn’t count for this challenge sense the world is the hardest one in the game and I highly doubt it would be possible if Lily Pad was counted.
This game has 3 additional types of plants you can obtain besides the world unlocked ones. Premiums (plants bought with real world money) Gemiums (plants bought with 100 gems) and Seediums (plants obtained via collecting seed packets, typically 250 of them.) it’s your call on if you want to allow these but in my opinion they are fine considering the majority of the overpowered ones are instas.
But yeah, this game is definitely “”fair and balanced”” and totally “”not pay to win””. No idea if anyone is gonna read this probably really long comment but hopefully it’s helpful! Really good video btw, enjoyed both this & your pvz1 series a lot.

I think this series would benefit by having a rule that you either instantly shovel the plants that start the round with and they dont count, or you use them but if they die it doesnt count as a death.

Well the question comes in for what about endangered plant levels, since if you lose that plant beforehand you would instantly lose the challenge.
Edit: It would be impossible if you counted preplanted plants because there is a wall nut endangered level which the preplanted plants would’ve made you lose

Fun fact, zombie locations are not RNG, they are preset with each level in this game. However even then, I found it a much more difficult game to beat without pay to win mechanics than I had ever anticipated. Good luck Pack!

Yeah, the adds, the extreme gacha systems and the Level system were all EA additions after the game had already released. It was muuuch smoother before and its really sad the state of the game now tbh. Id say to not level up your plants at all other than the required lvl up on Pea Shooter, because since it was added later, the main story isnt balanced around it at all, and most of the content is still made with lvl1 in mind. I guess level it up if its required to keep the challenge going but other than that, interacting with these systems makes the game worst.
Ow, and here is a tip: a lot of the instas Food effect spreads their hit to the entire screen, and still let them live normally. Maybe you could bring instas on field, put them in the back, and use food on them to get nice effects against gimmicky monsters, specially if you have extra slots. Food also fills a plant HP, and usually give shields to tank plants (mostly nuts). So its better to have a nut be 1/2 eaten, than use food on it to get it back to full with the armor on top

If you manage to get through this that'll be super impressive, I recently tried to get into pvz2 and theres a ton more instakills and a lot bigger reliance on insta plants so it'll be interesting to see how you try to deal with that. Also sadly the ads never improve, you can't even remove em with an IAP anymore.

IMO, if you shovel a preplaced plant and it didn't deal or take any dmg, it should be fine to still use it

Warning if spoilers ahead: So, I saw some comments giving advice and stuff, so I won't say what has already been passed. That being said, I'm not sure if this was already mentioned, but I think the Shoveling of plants should be disconsidered in the Conveyer belt levels.
The reason is that, not only some levels fill up the coveyer with junk, meaning that, unless you get rid of them, more plants won't come, unless you plant the ones already on the conveyer, there are also some levels that start 'upgrading' the plsnts you receive. And by that, I mean the level starts with weaker plants, and the longer it goes, better plants you'll get, but if you dont have space because you cant shovel plants, or you dont plant them in fear of losing them or whatever, those wont come.
The suggestion would be that you plant and immediately shovel the plant so you dont get its value, and thus basically it doesnt count. One example of this are the wild West levels with the minecarts and the electric gates. You'll know what I mean when you get there.
The Second thing, are the Locked and loaded levels, in which the level gives you the plants to use on that level, without user choice, so you either dont count those levels, or you'll have to do research to see which plabts you literally can't lose, or you'll "softlock" the run, in a way. For example, many of those use Peashooter/repeater, sunflower and Wallnut, so unless you wanna prepare for every single stage on the game, just dont count thise levels... Or you can just say 'get gud and dont lose any plants'.
Anyways, I hope I didnt ramble too much and that I could be the slightest bit helpful. So yeah, goodluck on the rest if the run 😊
For the first part, I completely agree, it’s what I was doing with the conveyer belt levels in the first game. For the second part, I’m going to lookup what I literally can’t lose and seriously attempt to not lose them but we’ll see what actually ends up happening. Thank you for the advice !😈
Dude, I love this idea, but you don't stand a chance. This game loves throwing zombies everywhere and there are so many instant kills that they can do. Not to mention Gargantuars. GOOD LUCK.

So there are levels with endangered wall-nuts… meaning you can’t get rid of the wall-nuts in those levels
I personally think pre planted plants and endangered plants don’t count if they die. Pre planted shouldn’t because half the time they are close to the right side so they will die sooner, and endangered plants shouldn’t count because if one dies you loose the level, even if the plant died before like for example in BWB there is a level where you need to protect potato mines, it should still count even though it died earlier
play an older version of the game because you can skip around the game and get plants early, also the new version has the worlds in the wrong order
Though it would require you to spend a few dollars, I believe you can remove ads if you purchase literally anything in the game. Don’t quote me on that because I haven’t myself, but it would help a lot with the ads.

After you start the game, if you disable the internet access of the emulator, ads shouldn't pop up anymore. And adventure is still playable, even though other modes are disabled.
I love bonkchoi but usually I use him behind walnut. For you he’s pretty useless id say for as long as you don’t have a high health plant. Still he’s a fuckin legend

The game itself is honestly pretty good in my opinion. The new mechanics added a lot of diversity to the gameplay. It's just that EA added a lot of shit that worsened the game over the years. A lot of the p2w stuff wasn't there originally.
