  • Veterans Tip of the Week - Veterans Burial Benefits - Have the Talk!
In response to a question on the subject, this week’s tip comes while on location at the Southern Maine Veterans Cemetery in Springvale, ME. (www11.maine.go...)
I was struck by the beauty and serenity of the grounds and actually visited because of the numerous signs along all the main roads, including I-95 and RT-1.
The VA offers two basic burial support programs for eligible veterans (above a dishonorable discharge) - Interment in one of 138 national cemeteries (across 40 states and Puerto Rico); and, Provision of a Government headstone or marker, a burial flag, and a Presidential Memorial Certificate, regardless of burial location (Fed, state or private), at no cost to the family. www.cem.va.gov...
For other eligible veterans there is a limited Burial and Plot Interment Allowance to assist with funeral expenses. ($300 for general funeral expenses and $796 for plot related expenses). www.benefits.v...
Many states also have burial benefits for eligible veterans:
    Maine - www.maine.gov/...
    New Hampshire - www.nhsvc.com/
    Massachusetts - www.sec.state....
    Vermont - veterans.vermo...
    Rhode island - www.vets.ri.gov...
    Connecticut - portal.ct.gov/...
If this is an issue you are facing or will be facing soon, I recommend you look into these resources before the need is upon you. The VA even has a “Pre-Need” eligibility determination program. www.cem.va.gov...
Another important consideration is survivor benefits. Check the Veterans Advice Hub for specific program, but they are generally listed here: www.va.gov/opa...
As always, please feel free to PM me if you have questions regarding you VA Benefits. If I don't know the answer, we will find it together. #gogetrated

During a conversation, someone mentioned that when a soldier is killed in a war zone , the casket sent to the family for burial is actually EMPTY !! Where are the remains ? Is this true ?
