  • Sony Buys Nikon: Nikon has recently announced huge financial loses, for the third time. In this episode I look at the possibility that Sony should buy Nikon's camera division. This would give Nikon access to Sony's finance and R&D and Sony a place in the pro camera market.

    As a Nikon shooter, I agree. Under one condition: Nikon's bodies, Nikon's Z Mount and the built quality are maintained. Improved eye-AF in Nikon's cameras, that would be cool!

    I think the problem with your analogy is that Nikon isn't much of a luxury brand like say Hasselblad or Leica. In fact, their range directly competes with Sony's. Not that I wouldn't love for this to happen. As we see with adapters, you could straight up port Sony's e-mount glass (and all accompanying 3rd party glass) straight to the Z-mount. Additionally, Sony has been seriously impressing with their engineering lately. See 20mm G vs 20mm S primes. Giving Sony's engineering team the access to: a more permissive mount, Nikon's proprietary optical tech like PF and blue wave dispersion glass, and putting that together with Sony's mastery of aspheric elements and AF would make an insanely solid foundation to dominate the market on. Plus, then I wouldn't have to choose between brands when putting together my kit haha.
    Can you imagine this lineup of primes? 20mm 1.8g, 24mm 1.4 GM, 35 1.8 S, 50mm 1.8S, 85mm 1.8S, 135 GM, 300 PF. Ye gods, I'd be set till they all broke. I definitely want this to happen, but I'm almost certain it won't.

    The combined business proposal makes sense from a resource and R&D angle, but the same car analogy won't work because Sony and Nikon would be fighting over the same piece of pie. A prospective Volkswagen buyer isn't looking to buy a Bentley. But a D6 buyer is probably also looking at the A9...same with the Z6 vs A7's. Unless Sony brands all the entry/hobbyist/prosumer bodies while reserving Nikon branding for the professional wildlife/sports bodies. That would be a clearer divide between product lines. Or perhaps split the branding between APSC/full frame/medium format.

    • @ThePhotoShow
      @ThePhotoShow  Před 4 lety

      Hi Michael, I do agree that in some areas there would be a cross over. I have always felt that Nikon's lower end cameras are not good enough and Sony's input could boost that side. With the Pro end Sony will always be playing catch up, even if the A9 out guns the D6, 99% of sports photographers would still be using Nikon or Canon. Both companies should be able to keep their users and offer them the best of both worlds, again this is only my opinion. Thank you for watching, stay safe, Dave.

    • @bfs5113
      @bfs5113 Před 4 lety

      I suspect that Sony will kill off the F mount (good excuse anyway) first and Nikon Z professional (~D6) will be Sony/Nikon professional line. While Sony has been doing a lot to break the Canon & Nikon 1Dx II/III & D5/6 stronghold, it will take more years and financial incentives to make it happens. The A9 can remain as an upgrade path for existing Sony (videocentric) owners. So the future will be Nikon's photo & camera design know-how with Sony's money, sensor tech & manufacturing, video know-how, marketing and Tamron lenses. Nevertheless, it will remain a sad day when it happens.

      The Photo Show Very possible, but I think the “big” camera companies will become profitable as boutique niche product providers with low volume and high margins as more people rely on their smartphones for photography. Sony’s biggest problem is Daniel Loeb, it’s largest investor. He wants Sony to spin off its sensor and camera businesses and focus on its core entertainment businesses

    • @romanpul
      @romanpul Před 4 lety

      @@lourivera913 That makes me think of another spin. Sony has quite a reputation for closing down some of its branches because they are not growing enough. And I think that could be the case with their camera division. So if Sony wants to get rid off their camera division (hypothetically) they could outsource (or sell) their camera production to Nikon. Such merger could include a deal that Nikon is obliged to develop at least two more generations of Alpha cameras and paying licence fees to Sony. Nikon could then go ahead and merge the tech of the A7 line with its Z line (which are already very similar in terms of specs) and base the successor of both cameras off of the same tech. So basically making one version with an E-mount and one with a Z-mount.
      I know there is a lot of IFs in there and seems very unlikely, but from a business perspective it could make sense to do this

    The Z mount is revolutionary and opens up possibilities for a medium format sensor in the same Z body (it fits). Sony would have to tread carefully so as not to canibalize their own camera offerings. This is the prickly patch they would have to navigate through, but I do agree that Sony would be a strong ally. If they merged, Canon will have to become something akin to Leica to survive or race to the bottom and feed the need of all the MWACs out there.
