- Have you ever noticed that male stars in Hollywood don’t tend to be very tall? It happens for a variety of reasons, not least of which is that it makes it easier to film them in scenes with female costars, who usually happen to be shorter as well. But even though the average Hollywood male actor is slightly shorter than the average person, there are some big stars who are even shorter than the average actor. In this video, we’re gonna take a look at the shortest male actors in Hollywood, by descending height.

We’ll start with perhaps the biggest star on the planet, Tom Cruise. And while Tom is known for wearing shoes that enhance how tall he seems, it’s public knowledge that he’s quite short. But he’s actually the top end of our list of short male actors in Hollywood. We have a hugely talented group that we’re talking about today - men who have achieved huge things, despite their smaller stature. Some are quite obviously short, like Danny Devito, who is known for being a very short, but very talented and successful actor. And for other actors with forms of dwarfism, their short statures are part of what have made them so distinct and recognizable. And then there are people like Danny Trejo, who project power and size on screen, but are actually pretty short! Clearly, all of these men prove that you don’t need to be above average height (or anywhere close to it) to make it as a huge star in Hollywood.

As a studio carpenter for twenty years, we made what's called "apple boxes" of varying heights - 4" high, 8" high, 10" high - for the short actors to stand on in shots where they were right next to a person that was a lot taller than them! We made a lot of them! They're in use all the time!

My Dad use to work at MGM as a Scene Painter, he used to tell us about Alan Lad !!! When he was walking next to other People, while the Cameras were Rolling, he would be Walking on Elevated Planks, so to look like he was the Same height as them !!! My Dad also said he was a Very Niece Guy !!! My Dad was 6' 3" im a Little Shorter than Him !!! To me Height is no big deal, but it does Help when Picking Apples !!

The biggest surprise for me was Danny Trejo. He seems much taller than 5'6" .
Yep, I was surprised too. I met him at a horror convention many years ago. He stood up to just above my nose and I’m 5’11”. Tom Savini is short too. Same height as Trejo.
Yup. Can confirm. My friend's uncle was part of Danny's close friends. When her uncle passed away, he and Emilio Rivera (SOA-Mayan leader) went to the memorial/life celebration and it was kind of shocking. But he's super nice and humble, and amicable. Nothing like the hard roles he portrays.
I know right? I never realized how short he was until I saw him in the movie "Badass."
Um, Danny Devito didn't get his start on Taxi but in the movie, One Flew Over the CooCoo's Nest a full 3-years before Taxi aired.

General rule of thumb, you can usually subtract three inches from official billed height of anyone famous. There's no way in hell Tom Cruise is 5'7". He's 5'5" at the most.
Trust me. Cruise is 5’6-5’7. I know this as fact. Iv stood next to him several times. I’m 5’6.

Danny Trejo is one of my favorite actors. I had no idea he was only 5' 6". His height really has not affected his career. On screen he is bigger than life . All of these men are good actors and I enjoy watching them act. Just goes to show someone doesn't have to be a giant to be a giant.
Peter Dinklage is a giant of a man in talent, character, intellect and drive.

@notfiveo I noticed taller dudes would only mess with me if I was dating a girl they were interested in. My ex told me a coworker of mine, that I was not friends with, would try to hit on her all the time with lines addressing my height being insufficient for her. She’s 5’3 and I’m 5’7. She’s also Chinese and they don’t care about height as much. I tend to date them a lot because of it.
I'm no fan of Tom, but ex bashing is actually for simple people.

I saw Danny last month in Vegas. We were at Carlos Santana show and I couldn't believe how short he was. Iv been a fan for years and figured he was 5'11 or so.

As a 5'6 male, I really enjoyed this! Retired Royal Marine Commando and I was not the shortest. Seriously, its about personalty, self esteem. She wont care about height if you get those squared away.

Back in the day, the most popular actors were also very short. Alan Ladd, Humphrey Bogart, Miket Rooney and James Cagney come to mind.
Cruise in no way appeared to be looking eye-to-eye with Kate. He looked like the short dude he is.

Right! When I found out that Al Pacino was 5’6” it changed how I watch “The Godfather”…and when I do… I see Michael and I think “man he’s short”!

It is hard to believe many of these actors are so short but so powerful on screen. After studying filmmaking I learned that shorter characters are easier to film. Alan Ladd and Mickey Rooney were some of the first actors I learned about their Hollywood success despite their height limitations. 🎬

And yet when electing presidents, people prefer tall people, and have never elected a bald man. (A bald guy told me that, I wasn't really looking for that). Tall people are assumed to be better leaders, even though it has no bearing on any factual basis. I guess we want someone to "look UP to" physically. Same for getting promoted or hired to some degree
What has short got to do with being talented may I ask? Just look at Tom Cruise - certainly never stopped him. It's actually Women that have always put a premium on height in a Man.
Burgess Meredith was maybe 5 foot 4. During WWII, he starred in a short subject (no pun intended) called "The Rear Gunner." It seems that the rear and ball turret gunners on our heavy bombers were best manned by short men. The film (which is on CZcams) aims to recruit guys who were nicknamed, "Peewee" and "Shorty" who wanted to get into the fight, but felt their size was against an active role. Rear gunners were all NCO's (because the Germans treated NCO prisoners better than lower ranked ones.) Of course, their chances of surviving were 50-50, the odds being set by the number of missions they would have to complete, starting at 25 and rising into the 30's after the Nazi's ability to fight diminished. This is the key point that drives the plot to "Catch 22).

that movie was ok but I wouldn't watch it a 2nd time. a much better movie was "First Encounters of the 3rd Kind". and who can forget "ET" & Star Wars? hell how about "20001 a Space Odyssey"? All of these blew Back to the Future away in my opinion when it came to Sci-Fi.

Apple boxes! My friend and i used to kid around about these guys, and say in the credits, "Phone Book Mover," imagining a job in film that involves "sprinting around the set, moving a stack of phone books." For example, right under "key grip" and "best boy," it would say " Mr Cruises phone booker." 😃
I knew all of these actors were short except for Danny Trejo. That blew my mind! I have seen him in Desperado and other movies, and as you said, he mostly plays guys who are intimidating. I assumed he was at least 6'2"!

Great. Now give us one on short actors of the Golden Age. We had Alan Ladd, Edward G. Robinson, James Cagney, and Bogey, all around 5' 6" or less. My boss, the famed wild animal trainer Clyde Beatty, also in the movies, stood at 5' 4". Lots of them, and like in this video, some surprises.

You should have featured Mickey Rooney, who at one time was bigger box office than Clark Gable. Rooney’s career spanned from childhood to old age in many award winning films. Comedy, drama, musical, dancing, Rooney mastered all.

Rating somebody by height is like rating them according to liking chocolate ice cream as apposed to vanilla. Height, weight, hair color, skin color, eye color does not make up the person. Character, honesty, integrity, loyalty, ability, potential does not come from appearance.

It's actually Women that have put a premium on height in a Man which has permeated Society as being a "Negative" or "Recessive". Even as a tall man I can assure you I have met plenty of shorter Men that are either extremely tough, extremely smart or both.
A man can be fit, muscular, and short, but the narrator is speaking of the projection of physicality. Taller people who are fit and muscular tend to project that more easily. Lundgren, Momoa, (Alexander) Skarsgard, (Chris) Hemsworth, Schwarzenegger, Evans, Pratt, etc. are all tall. Shorter actors like Van Damme, Statham, Cruise, Efron and Trejo can project, too, but they're not as imposing. Height does make a difference here. Think of the guy (Bjornsson) who played The Mountain in Game of Thrones as an extreme example.
I've rum into my fair share of actors and it always surprises me how short most all. Chris Noth is an actor I use to run into and wasn't short.
Those are all very good actors. I’m sad to learn many of them have some health issues.
There’s also many French actors that wasn’t particularly tall but very talented. Louie de Funes, Villerai comes to mind, I wonder how tall Pierre Richard now that we are on the subject.

I seem to remember seeing Peter Dinklage in Avengers Infinity War where he played a giant who remade Thor's hammer after Mjolnir had been destroyed by his sister Hela in Thor Ragnarok. Strange casting but quite good because he towered over Chris Hemsworth in that film.
He actually played a giant dwarf. From what I remember he looked about 75 feet tall.

The lucky ones on this list have been able to use their short stature to their advantage. Danny has had a lot of roles that probably were created just for him. He is one of my favorites too.

Danny Devito has a great sense of humor. An example was a film with him and his wife playing terrible characters in the Movie Matilda. I wonder what they thought of them selves and if they had a good laugh over that Movie.

@@samanthab1923 yeah he had a small scene in Top Gun Maverick and used some computer stuff and old audio tapes of him, to help him out. Wonder if they'll do that for Willow. He's still acting, which is good. And he still has his sense of humor. Just watch his documentary on Amazon Prime and you will see that he's going pretty strong. He's had an interesting life.

I think all the dwarfed actors owe some level of gratitude to great actors like the late Herve' Villechaize and Michael Dunn.

Yup. There are a lot of short men in Hollywood but there are plenty of trees too. Not just action stars like The Rock, there are plenty of dramatic and comedy guys who are 6'4" plus.

At 6' 3", 315LBs I'm not exactly a giant, but definitely a big fellow. Yet, I would be honored immensely to meet any one of these gentlemen. Regardless of height, these guys are giants to me. Masters all.

Almost all men exaggerate their height. If they say Tom Cruise is 5'7" then he is probably 5'5" or less.

🌟 Both Tattoo/Herve Villechaiz from Fantasy Island and Dr Loveless/Michael Dunn from The Wild Wild West were both 3'11. Rob Schneider and Kevin Hart are both 5'3.
There is another actor that should've been added to this list. *Kenny Baker* who most iconic role was R2-D2 in the Star Wars movies, he was 3ft 8in. Sadly though he passed away in 2016

Not phony height per se, but there's a scene in "McMillan and Wife" starring 6'4" Rock Hudson, and he's talking to a man in an office lounging against a piece of furniture, or something( It's been awhile).
When the man stands upright ,it's "Jaws" from the Bond movies, 7'1"? Tall Richard Kiel, it's a jokey moment when McMillan sorta acknowledges ,there are people taller than himself ----- he's been using his height for years to unnerve people.
All these actors are quite AMAZING actors and have personalities larger than life, as it was well said for one of them in the video. However, my personal favorites are (in chronological order) Michal J. Fox, esp. playing Alex P. Keaton in legendary Family Ties TV series and Marty McFly in the cult Back to the Future movies, super funny Danny de Vito in basically everything he played, and brilliant Peter Denklage as Tyrion Lannister in GOT!
Of the actors listed here, Peter Dinklage is my favorite because he is so talented!
Tom is not 5'7". I've seen him at the Starbucks in downtown Clearwater... I'm 5'9", he's more like 5'5".

I figured that Dinklage would make your list because of his height. He may also be the best actor in your video ... and I challenge anyone; male or female, to find me a short guy or anyone as beautiful in the looks department. I'm not so sure I'd change places with him, but it can't be all bad. Great career, great money, probably a trail of used Female naughty-bits ... I can't speak for everyone, but that trade isn't completely out of the question.
ON BLINID DATES I used to tell the girl I was 6'3". When we met, they were pleasantly surprised to find out I was really 6'5" in my bare feet. They said most guys lied the other way around and always said they were 6' even. But were sometimes as short at 5'7"...
Crazy how movie magic can largely get rid of height differences. For example, a guy like RDJ seems similar to Chris Hemsworth or Tom Cruise to Val Kilmer despite there being 5"+ in height difference.

I like Michael J Fox ! He’s a real man who is an inspiration to many. Taxi was a great Show. And it’s a sip.! Return of the Jedi was a great movie. One in the trilogy I have loved and watch. I saw them in theaters huge ones. Where the whole place had only three movies at one place. The place was like ac Stadium. Then, I went to see Child’s play. They turned the big places into many smaller theaters where it wasn’t like sitting in someone’s living room with cold size seats and a 40 in TV on the wall! I have never gone to another movie. There are places that are still Hugh and you can buy real food to eat. And beers if you want

Like to add William Shatner. Something like 5'6 or 7. TOS had a few issues finding women for him to work with most were a bit taller. S. Stallone isn't very tall similar problems in making Rocky most heavyweight fighter dwarfed him. Deceased Paul Nelson, was happy to work with Barbara Eden 5'3 ish, Paul Newman could loom over her, not by much Paul was only about 5'7 ish.
Peter Tinkledge is an excellent actor who I often times find appealing and even sexy. Besides that he's witty, humorous and quite intelligent.

Don't leave out Al Pacino in this comparison. Mr Shorty. Film him in front of everyone else by a few feet, put the camera down to his height, and le looks like a normal height person.
A good example of the height difference with Al is in Sea of Love. Look at the scenes where Al and Gruber arrive at the apartment building first investigating one of the crimes. When Al is on his own the height difference is dramatic. In the elevator scene, they shoot Al in front of the elevator and Gruber in the back and they look the same.
Humphrey Bogart was 5'7" and costarred with Ingrid Bergman, who was nearly 6', in 'Casablanca. In one scene, they are walking along together, and he is a couple of inches taller than she.

Michael Mcdonald is billed at 6'3". I met him in Iraq, and I was his height... I'm only 6'1". I'm not sure how true any of these billed heights are.

I met three people who saw Tom cruise in real life - they don’t know each other and all said the same thing - they were surprised how short he was - if he was 5 7 , with even a little shoe lift , I doubt he would look that short …. Especially with his muscular fit look . I think he is shorter than 5 7

But what about the tiny, tiny female actress who played a lawyer in a long running series in the 1980's. I have her autograph, but I cannot remember her name. She was only around 2 feet.

As a 5'2 person anyone above 5'5 is tall to me.
I find this somewhat interesting and wonder if there is any biology to this. I mean in bodybuilding there is very few cases where someone has won the Mr. Olympia and being tall say 6 foot and above. That I guess is because shorter people have it easier to put on muscle that is visible and muscles that look big. That leads me into thinking that shorter people, dwarfs excluded, generally have better body compositions in terms of symmetry which then also translates to their face composition in looking good. Since there are studies what people like in that there are face features or ratios that most people like better than other. And since most celebrities either look really good or has a face that really stands out still without being ugly but don't win any model contests or sexiest person on the planet awards, I think height has something to do with it.
Anyway also height is probably one of the least problems a modern production will have with all the trickery they can do with the camera, angles etc. but I guess it's easier if everyone is roughly the same height for a shot but not really a problem. Maybe in the earlier days of movies where they didn't have the same technology as today. And I guess it only matter when there are multiple people in the shot.
