CSX Heavy rebuild shop yard, Huntington WV

- This time I decided to take a trip down south to Huntington WV. and the surrounding area and see what we could find, being that this area is rich in C&O railroad history, plus it was a rainy cold nasty day, what else was there to do. so, if I'm gonna sit on the couch all day, might as well sit in the car and see something.
The CSX heavy rebuild shop is located in Huntington WV and is on the Ex Chesapeake and Ohio main line. This facility is on CSX's Kanawha Subdivision, between Russell KY and Charleston WV.
This shop is responsible for repaint, rebuild, and servicing Locomotives, and have done rebuilds and repaints of engines and passenger cars for museums.
I had caught a NS coal train in Ironton OH. and one in Kenova WV while I was tooling around. so be on the lookout for those vids as well. I hope you enjoy my little trip around the yard and if you do and haven't already, like, sub, and share, and I thank you for watching.

Squaw Creek, really neat show today Pappy 👍👍👍
Ah Ha, I knew I should of asked you, it crossed my mind to send you a pick that day don't know why I didn't. Thanks Dave glad you liked it, my friend
Squaw Creek coal company had a huge strip mine operation with a load out on the Ohio River at Yankeetown Indiana.
My home town!!
Thats awesome, hope I did it proud, thank you for watching.
That was a lot of power in one place. Some neat old locos in there too.
It was a cool place, wish the weather was better when I went. Thanks for watching Roy, stay well.
Loved it, seeing the 47's and the GP30 slugs are not all cut up yet. A great spot to get photos of engines to paint up and weather. That caboose inside the fence would be cool to make up for the nit pickers here...lol
Thanks Pappy.
Thanks Arty, so glad you enjoyed it, love when I go to these spots and see great locos that you thought were gone, and the caboose' es that I come across just lights me up. Sure do miss them
@@TriGogglin These types of spots are extremely rare now in my area, and parts of Sydney. Micro management in the government departments killed it. We had rail yards, storage yards and multiple maintenance facilities here. All gone once the micro management got into it, deregulated the rail industry, and brought in contractors. Many of the contractors that wont pay their bills and under cut way below affordable rates....
@@Ausmerica Sydney, Australia?
@@mshum538 Yes I am. Well close to Sydney, I'm to the south it's nicer here.
I work there, currently we are doing SD70 overhauls, GE overhauls and Unscheduled Engine change outs(It blew up), RM's on both EMD and GE's. Doing a Hybrid rebuild using a EMD platform with a GE engine. There is nothing that HHR can't do. We see all kinds of stuff, they even had to called back 8 electricians on furlough. I think it was for the Hybrid units.
Whoa, thats awesome Bob, thanks for this comment.
Huntington is named after Collis P. Huntington, a major investor of US railroads, C&O, Central Pacific, and Southern Pacific. He was one of the "Big 4" investors.
I love this kind of info, thank you. His statue was out front of the yard masters office, was getting ready to read the plaque on who he was and get a video, thats when the train showed up and I took off running to get it, and I forgot to go back, lol so thank you. Much appreciated.
That's alot of CSX.CHEERS
For sure, it was great. Thank you.
A great fishing trip. Thanks Pappy. Happy Sunday.
Thank you Sarah, wish i could fish somewhere every day. And a happy Sunday to you too.
Awesome Tour Pappy-Thanks!!
Very welcome Ralph, glad you liked it.
@ 00:10... railroad wheel of fortune... "i'd like to solve the puzzle chuck..."🤣🤣🤣
Lol thats great, thanks for watching
🇺🇸 hello from Kansas
Hello, from Ohio, thank you appreciate you watching
That was a great tour Pappy!! That shop looks like they have plenty of work. Thanks for sharing and stay safe. Happy modeling!! -Jason
Thanks Jason, most definitely got their hands full. Wish the weather was better when I went but at least I got some good stuff. Thanks for watching and appreciate the comment.
The US is really one big railway cemetery, everything still looks as in 1950.
There are definitely a lot of railroad scrap yards, but this one is a rebuild shop, their all just waiting to be worked on, in one format or another. I appreciate you watching and leaving me a comment. I do have another video similar to this that is kinda a scrap yard, I did 4 months back, take a look I think you'll like it.
czcams.com/video/i6kUkwh1XPc/video.html
Thanks for recording this Pappy. A heavy repair yard might be a good choice for that relatively inaccessible back corner of the layout and used just to store and display the locomotive collection, especially those that might have a few pieces missing. Loved the USDA car!
Very welcome Art, and thank for watching and all the ideas you come up with, thats not a bad idea if I don't get my original plan to work. I got some old dummy engines and an old dash 8 with no motor in it. And yes that USDA car was fantastic. Glad I seen it, cause never seen nothing like it befor.
Fantastic! Love that Chesapeake & Ohio steam locomotive! And definitely love all caboose cars. Thanks for filming and sharing this.
Very welcome Val, told ya I had another one for ya 🤣 thank you for coming back for more. It was a fun day.
The Western Maryland scenic rr has the this locomotives sister (1309) restored. They ran it for a few days last month for their "North Pole Express'" trains. Was lucky enough to get a couple of videos of it running. Truly a sight to see.
Oh man that would have been cool to see for sure, thanks for the info ill have to go look that up.
@@TriGogglin definitely check their Facebook page, I'm almost certain they have pictures and videos of it running. Hopefully you'll be able to come to Cumberland and check it out when they start running it routinely.
@@Midnight-tw3gp thank you, that would be a nice trip.
It is amazing to see so many locomotives together at the same point 😲 Well done! 👍
Thanks Al, I had a really good trip. And really didn't know what I was going to see till I got there and was very pleased. Glad you liked it.
Wow Pappy I just noticed the views on this video, excellent job!
Yes Dave I was shocked and amazed that in the first 12 hours it took off. Thank you for watching, glad you enjoyed it.
Great, well done!
Thank you, Glad you enjoyed it. Appreciate you watching
Alot of really nice stuff. Looks like you'll have to make a Friday Visit.
Thanks Matt, yeah seems every time i show up somewhere its closed, I always have the worst timing, but at least I got to see what they had. Thanks for watching.
@@TriGogglin I've done the same thing. I now try to check on the Internet to see if they have a Site and try to check out Opening Times. But with Covid this doesnt even work all the time anymore.
@@jebbthetrainkid1281 yeah that would do it, but problem is I seldom know I'm going to these places 🤣🤣 I just end up there..
Pappy ya had everything in that video outing👍
🚂🇨🇦🇺🇲
I do try to get as much as possible when I go that far, I may not have all the info but I sure try to get all the sights. Thanks again for watching.
Theres alot of old nice looking GP units there
Yeah Joe, thought someone would like those, thanks for watching.
you caught a lot of good stuff on this fishing trip you must of had some pappy bread with you
Lol Dwight, thank you, I actually did have some with me, you seen it in the recipe video I did, the 2 csx engines in the back when I held up the bag was this trip. Gotta make some more and head out again. Thanks for watching buddy.
That’s a lot of locomotives. Now I see why there’s 4 SD70MAC’s in service right now. Nice video
Sure is, I liked this place, thanks for watching glad you liked it.
I think a lot of those locomotives were in Cumberland last year.
Does Cumberland not do paint and heavy repair anymore?
good vid thanks lee
Thanks Lee, appreciate it
What an awesome spot Pappy, and wow what I wouldn’t give to have a tour of that shop! That Chessie System caboose was awesome! That C&O steam engine would be something to see in action. And Pappy can you imagine the amount of money CSX has sitting there with all them locos? WOW💰. Enjoyed this Pappy, thanks for sharing 👍🏼😁🇺🇸
Oh man you are not kidding. Heck I just want what one would cost, 🤣 so glad you enjoyed this video. I want a chessie or conrail caboose as a man cave.. 🤣
Pretty awesome to see your hometown on CZcams, new to the channel but I will be watching more often, thanks for sharing this with us.
Thank you Ryan, and thanks for the hospitality, I had a great day in Huntington. I'll definitely make a return trip. Was still things I wanted to see, and thanks for the support.
Great place to visit! Lots of locomotives. Thanks for sharing Pappy. Hope you’re staying warm.

Wow cool video 👍 one sure thing is the employees definitely will be busy and wont run out of some service and reply work for a while 😀
Yes thats for sure, there were some spots I could not video. But I seen some in the back that were in different stages of repair, so yes got their work cut out for them, appreciate you watching thank you

Awesome lots of CSX power their!
For sure, it was awesome, thank you for watching.
Great video!! Loved seeing the Chessie and C&O cabooses. Also a cool catch on that Squaw Creek hopper-Jenny
Thanks Jenny, so glad I included that hopper, couldn't figure out what it was, even Googled it lol. Very glad you liked it.
@@TriGogglin I'm a freight car nut lol- Jenny
I think railroad in my. bloodstream. As a child thru. Adult working do the railroad Thanks For sharing
Yes indeed, gets you hooked and can't undo it, thanks for watching much appreciated.
Hope you had a great time in my home town. Most of that long line of engines has been sitting there several years now.
Oh wow Kevin great info thank you. I'll have to do some digging. And yes had a great day in Huntington and the surrounding area. Stopped and had a ham and cheese at Tudors Biscuit world, was going to eat a cams hams but ran out of time. I think I hit every street that day. Weather was not the best, but thats not Huntington fault 😆
Awesome video buddy sad to see those old locomotives in storage
Thank you, yeah but some may see the rails again.
@@TriGogglin hopefully
I suggested that CSX rebuild one of their own cabooses, to use as a Security Office at the CSX Railyard in Selkirk, New York.
Thats awesome, did they do it or at least take it into consideration. Thank you for watching.
@@TriGogglin They said, "Gee, that's a great idea, but we aren't doing it..."
@@Shield.148 lol figures, company's have the means to do things but don't, I once wrote a letter to menards and asked them to do Their train stuff in N scale they too said nope. Only O and HO
That was a great video PAPPY! It's just amazing to see all those LOCOMOTIVES and wonder how much $$$$ was just sitting still lol. I saw a CSX MP15AC I'd like to put in my pole building when it's done being built! Thanks again for letting me know abt this video and for sharing them w us my friend!
Very welcome Shawn, hopefully most of these will be put back out on the rails.
Nice catch
Thank you, it was a fun day.
That's a cool place!
Thanks Anthony 😊
Nice Video!
Thank you, so glad you enjoyed it.
Nice viewing of all my favorites of diesels of CSX. One i noticed is an MP 15 I know it isn't an SW 1500! This is another favorite video of all these parked engines. I have scale models in HO scale of most of what i have watched well worth it! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐👍👋👋👋👋👋
Wow thank you Harold, really appreciate that. Thank you for watching and the great comment
Harold, i noticed you have an interest in the 1500 series, do you know why they are mp’s?
@@mshum538 Hi there. The MP 15 hood is slightly longer than the SW 1000 & 1500'S. On New York s Long Island Railroad had them in commuter service for many years before being replaced with new engines & commuter cars that reassigned them. I spotted one when I lived in Queens at that time doing freight & other maintenance of way duties. I know MILWAUKEE ROAD had them until SOO LINE took over & were orange & black, with black paint patch up with SOO LINE logo. ATHEARN in HO scale had them years earlier. My surprise spotting them on this video on CSX.
@@haroldalexis4200 I lived less than a 1/4 mi. From the Port Jefferson, L.I.R.R. terminal, and got to see them every day. I was so disappointed NO company ever deemed it worth their time to make it in an N scale version. Saw them in the Grey, blue, and white colors, and a bunch of years later, in a Forest Green, with the New York and Atlantic, Freight Scheme.
Oh Yeah, the MP, stood for the company, Motive Power, 15,was 1500hp., and the ac., and dc., versions had radiator intakes, on the Nose end, or the Left and Right sides, but I don't remember which version had which.
I spent lots of time around the C&O in my birth city of Huntington in the 1960s especially while attending Marshall University. I have written a number of blogs about Huntington on my website.
Thats great, the rails are definitely not what they use to be. I had a really good day in Huntington, thank you for watching.
Isn’t always fun to Ho to place that people want you to support just to have it closed? I don’t understand why everyone things attractions should be closed on the weekends when people can get out but open during the week when nobody can get there. Good video nice job of catching things.
Lol steve, I complain to the wife about that constantly, its either closed for the winter or open Monday thru Friday thats most peoples work schedule. Yes it should be open sat sun, and closed m- f lol and yes then they want a donation. So I can look thru the fence.🤣 anyway ..... thanks for watching very glad you enjoyed it.
Looks like a few flared SD70s got some much needed attention
And hopefully more of these beauties will get some attention, thank you for watching.
Back in the 90d’s csx had engines painted orange/pumpkin colored, anyone remember and know why????
@@mshum538 I remember that paint scheme. It was called the pumpkin scheme. It was used to identify Maintenance of Way (MoW) equipment. Usually locomotives. But occasionally other track equipment
@@CSX4772 Those engines were restricted to 30 mph, they were outlawed for revenue freight…only to be allowed for MOW service…..
nice i subscribed
Thank you, and thanks for watching.
The car was from Squaw Creek coal mine
South western Indiana
A Peabody mine
Thanks, I love this community. I would have never known, glad I put it in the video, thanks for watching.
I haul for csx and I’m bringing a truck frame from the derailment in Avon Indiana. I will be there on 2/21/21 to deliver it
Oh man that would be awesome to see, Thanks for the heads up, but I'm stuck at work that day. Really appreciate that though.
👍👍
Thanks Tom
I might go there that’s not far
Its definitely a cool thing to see. If you get the chance definitely go.
USDA car? I gotta see what I can find out on that.
You would definitely be the man for the job on that Matt, so glad you watched, we'd all be interested in knowing. That would make a great video for you. Thank you for watching.
That's a squaw creek coal company hopper car.
Thank you Terry, first time I had seen one, I have recently caught another one that the word was still fully there, it's a great looking hopper.. I appreciate you watching..
This was a productive fishing trip for sure. So much too see , did you only manage to catch one train ? 👍👍
Thanks Jerry, while in Huntington WV I only caught the one, but on the way there I caught an NS coal drag in Ironton OH, and on the way home the one on the viaduct in kenova WV. But I was just happy cruising that yard and see what I could find. It was a great day, thanks for watching my friend.
nice video, how many locos do you think they have stored there and what percentage are being rebuilt verses scrapped? thanks
Thank you, and oh that question, um I have no idea, couldn't begin to guess, you couldn't see it in the video but there's more on the other side of the bridge i was on and more towards the shop area. I'm not from there so I can't even ask any one who might know. I do apologize for the lack of info was just trying to show what I could. Maybe some one will see this comment and give us an answer. Thank you for watching.
lihat dulu
So everything is being rebuilt in this yard?
That i do not know, thats what I take it as,
And just think, at one point CSX wanted to close this facility.
Ah, really, did not know this. Thank you. And thanks for watching.
Looks like CSX has as many spare engines as does Larry's Truck and Electric (LTEX)! Is the rail business so slow that they don't need all those engines on the road?
I'm not sure of the state of affairs these days but, I figured all the DPUs they run with bigger trains now definitely probably put a need to download some inventory.
2300 is that really a GP 30?
I'm not sure, it looks like it is a slug but I couldn't really tell. Hopefully someone else will see the comment and be able to answer. Appreciate you watching
Squaw Creek...
Thank you Bill, I like when I find things I never seen, and my viewers help me out.
@@TriGogglin I head from NC to Michigan a few times a year, and my route takes me somewhat close to Huntington... (I usually use rt 35 from the interstate up to Ohio, then go diagonally to western Michigan... I will have to see about stopping there, and then going cross country up to 35....
That would be a great stop, some if my viewers say the yard changes quite often. So you'll never know what you might see.
ALL THOSE ENGINE UNITS ARE A TAX SCAM BY THE OWNERS OF CSX.
I'm sure there maybe some truth to that, but we'll never really know. Thank you for watching.
This is the Squaw Creek (I agree...) that had the most obvious rail connection. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Squaw_Creek_Southern_Railroad Now, looking forward to this, as H'ton is where I was born...
