A Kayak for the Great Loop

- I hope to get some paddling in during this adventure. I already set up the dinghy. Next on the to-do list was choosing a kayak to bring with me. It had to be light and easy to transport, so I asked Pelican for an Argo 100. They told me that due to factory shutdowns and limited inventory, I might only be able to get a very basic model. Well, I was resolved to that fact and quite content even because the Argo and I have had a fun history. And I can make a lot happen with very little. But Pelican surprised me by shipping me the XR model! I had seen this boat at iCast the year the Catch 130 was introduced. Everyone at the show was abuzz over seeing an economical version of a fin-style peddle drive and yet my eyes kept straying towards the little kayak with the fancy seat. I had no idea that years later, that tiny vessel and I would be destined to travel along America's Great Loop! If you're interested to see more about this awesome little kayak I'll leave a link. I love the pliers mount! It takes me about five minutes to install one rod holder, but two days to locate all the stuff.

Perfect for storing on boat, towing it behind to make room on boat. Not too high to loose balance or flip all the time. Good kayak Pelican gave you! Awesome stuff Marty. You seem to have thought it through completely and if not others will chime in to help too.
You should get two pieces of PVC, and put rope through them to attatch to the pass tracker when towing it. It will always be that certain amount of length away from the boat, so when you stop it won't hit the back of the con-tiki.

I love your video's. Because of you I own 4 kayaks (3 are pelican) and a pelican paddle boat. All have been modified. You gave me the corage to just drill it or cut it up. Can't wait to see this up coming journey. Good luck. Be safe.

I picked up set of 4 flush rod holders on eBay. $20, each came with rubber caps secured by a leash to multi purpose rubber gasket to alleviate concerns of silicone or sealant around the new holes. Course mine's a S.O.T. Jackson... Nice looking boat, I'm jealous. Contemplating removing drag pad on jackson, replacing with a small wheel set up? All our lakes are low and dirty in OR... Nice! I was in the market for one of these for a while but couldn't find them anywhere. Ended up with an Old Town I love, but there's something special about the new argo that I really love. May have to get it as a second yak for when I take a buddy out! Keep up the awesome work and have fun out there man, your videos always inspire me to get out on the water!

When you're on the Indian River stop by Anchorage Yacht Basin. Ask for Ed or Ian and tell them Kenny sent you. If the need arises they will happily haul the boat and give it a quick clean before the next leg of your journey!

That’s a cool little kayak! Can’t wait to watch your adventure! I noticed the straps holding your kayak to the boat. They might not hold up to well in the salty conditions and may be hard to use pretty quickly. Maybe spray some WD-40 on them as a preventative measure.

Great update Marty. Good idea to stack the Kayak on the Bass Raider, but won't it make it awkward if you need to get ashore with the Pups in a hurry? In your previous video, you showed a new Pelican Bass Raider with these AWESOME swivel seats. Do you know who I can contact at Pelican to purchase them? I am unable to get in touch with anyone at Pelican to try and purchase them. The original BR seats are terrible!

How in gods name and the 5 kayaks I own, have I never heard of Gator Patch before??!? It's right on Amazon...
At any time after the holes were drilled and rod holders installed did you put any sealant to prevent leaks? How about wheels for hand pulling.
I like the seat on the Argo, I saw one once at the beginning of the pandemic and was going to buy it but since I needed two I held off. I'd like to know your thoughts on how comfy the seat is after spending a few hours in it.
I think I'm too top heavy for a it in kayak! Lol

Marty, what speed/rpm will you be running at on the trip? I assume relatively slow due to fuel consumption.
