- This week's Throw Back Thursday comes from May 1983, when Dundee United won the league with a win against their fierce rivals Dundee at Dens Park. A superb chip from Ralph Milne after four minutes triggered delirious celebrations from the away support before Eamonn Bannon doubled the advantage just seven minutes late, scoring the rebound after his penalty was saved by Colin Kelly. Dundee claimed a goal back through Iain Ferguson after 28 minutes, but it wasn't enough to prevent United from winning the league title for the first ever time.

A stupendous achievement. This wasn't a lucky Cup win; this was a real endurance battle over 10 months, overcoming the Old Firm AND Ferguson's Aberdeen.
I was there, strange to say as I'm actually an Aberdeen fan but I was 8 at the time, I lived in Dundee and my best mate and his auld man were United daft so I went along with them to watch the league decider. My only memory was the crush in the TCK when Ralphie scored the first goal. We were down at the front and basically got piled on!
RIP Jim McLean, you gave us success like no one else. Thank You!
Necking vodka.......
I'm a Celtic fan but I have to say this United team were a great side throughout the Eighties, they should have won a lot more than they did. The season after this they even reached the European Cup semi finals, where they were cheated out of the final by Roma... and the the referee if I'm not mistaken. 1982- 83 was a great season though with Aberdeen also winning the Cupwinners Cup. I don't think we'll see days like those again.
I WAS THERE!
Halcyon days....
When Utd had a real team.
Never to be repeated.
RIP Ralphie
RIP Ralph Milne a Dundee United legend
2 pints and a shot......😂
Amazing feat for a provincial club, feel privileged to have been there during that time, best manager, best team, and best fans!!!!🧡🖤

Outstanding team! Outstanding achievement!
R I P Ralphy.......MUFC
RIP Ralphie, indeed. Very good player, ignored by Scotland (shamefully). Gone too soon :(
Get the rounds in 😂😂😂
The chip shop left the keeper helpless.

RIP Ralph Milne

AA MUSICsCORE sorry for loss rip Ralph come on the Arabs and sheds
Tragic we only won 3 major trophies in that era, should have won double that with that team, still a great time for Arabs though and considering we had never even won or reached a major final before Mclean arrived FTD 83
R.I.P Ralph Milne.
Incredible, great days
RIP Jim Mc Lean
Great scenes. Wouldn't it be amazing to see any other club outside the Old Firm win the league? Even if it was Hearts!? 😆 GGTTH
I was at the match to remember Ralphy today

What was the attendance lads?
Officially, 25,000.
I recall it being just over 29,000 when the capacity was supposed to be 24,000. I remember just how packed it was, what a great day it was being able to witness that.
Never forget that day, especially the slagging from the funderz prior to game, theres no better place to silence them.. get it up ya.. shed rule 😂
Only if you are a United fan. For Dundee fans this must be the worst.
It must’ve been strange as a Dundee fan? There was probably a few Dundee Dads who found that their dons and daughters suddenly supported United!
It’s like Notts county and Nottingham Forest.
