Preoccupation Is Making Your Chronic Pain and Symptoms Worse!

  • We often think that the more we know, understand, and problem solve our pain, that it will go away.
But really, preoccupation is making your chronic pain and symptoms worse, not better.
If you don't believe me, give this a try. Try intensely thinking or talking about your symptoms. Describe them in great detail and remind yourself of all the intellectual "stuff" you know about them. Do your symptoms somehow feel worse now?
I don't mean that you should bury your head in the sand or be in denial. And of course, with the onset of a new or troubling symptoms, you should get your proper medical care.
But when we're talking about frequent googling, continued research, identifying with labels, and engaging in forums and support groups, it can cross the line into preoccupation. Preoccupation does nothing to make your brain feel safer, and it only magnifies your current symptoms.

If I wasn’t preoccupied with my situation, I wouldn’t be on your channel. 😂😂

I have chronic head tension. My muscles in my face are so weak I can’t smile properly or keep my eyes open relaxed. I can’t ignore it its in my head and visible. I feel so uncontrollable and unattractive with this tension and I tried medication but it helped just sometimes and not gor long. It was fluctuating and now I am without medication and it’s the same fluctuating and on top of it I have sleep problems. My head feels so heavy and I feel so out of balance. I can’t live with this anymore it’s been 7 months. But had it first 1.5 years ago it went away with medication but this section time it didn’t. I am devastated. I aged so much because of it.

Hi, I hope you can look at the idea of a mind-body cause as good news. It's good news because the brain can be re-trained. No matter how long the symptoms have been there, these techniques work. I suggest you watch the videos then pick one concrete thing you can do to get yourself started. Be consistent with it no matter what your symptoms are doing. Remember that symptoms are a horrible indicator of what's really going on. Minor problems can hurt a lot and major problems can be silent. So while your symptoms and tension are high right now, that doesn't mean you've gotten worse. You had good days in the past, use that as evidence you will have good days again in the future. Thanks for being here.

Thanks for your note. Have you tried talking to your brain? Sitting down in a quiet place and having a chat like you were having a coffee or a beer with an old friend? It may sound something like, "Hey, I know we've been through a lot the past few years. COVID was hard. Losing dad was hard. It was hard watching our wife have to have major surgery. To be honest, those things were really scary. Wow. But as hard as it was, we're ok. We're safe. And we're going to be ok. Is there something you need from me to help you release these symptoms?"
I think your brain could benefit from giving it messages of safety.
Thanks for being here, and keep learning bit by bit.

@@tominnc315 You've made an important first step by having awareness about the fear and anxiety. Part of your inner dialog can sound like an indifferent observer, "hey look, there's some fear or anxiety talking to me." When symptoms are high, see what happens if you ask yourself what's concerning you at the moment.

If you’re diagnosed with lumbar stenosis and I try to resume normal activities the longer I walk the more intense the pain how do not dwell on the symptoms? Thanks in advance for any suggestions.😊

Hello, This will be a good topic for a future video. I'll try to give a quick summary here.
While it's frustrating for you right now, stick with it.
-Talk to your brain and reassure it that "you got this".
-Little by little try to stretch your boundaries. Think of gradually filling a balloon. You're not trying to fill it so fast that it pops. Just stretch the limits a little at a time.
-Approach the symptoms with indifference. Try calling the symptom a silly name, like "hmmm, I have a bit of fluffernutter today." As silly as that seems, it's a very powerful technique.
-don't straddle the fence. Look and see if you're actions are backing up your beliefs about this being a neural circuit symptom.
      Thanks for being here!
