Today we’re discussing the problem of Gohan’s age as well as his age throughout the entirety of the main continuity.After making the timeline video I realized how weird Gohan’s Age is so I wanted to discuss and explain it in detail!

It’s funny that people call 11 year old gohan “Teen Gohan”, while they call 15 year old Goku “Kid Goku”.
It's probably because of the games plus goku was very small for a 15 yo and gohan looked pretty accurate for his age (11)

The mistake is that Carthu is using the Funimation Timeline where they said Goku trained on Yadrat for 2 year which is not true Goku only trained on Yadrat for 1 year. Gohan was 6 when Trunks came back to warn them about the androids not 7

@@Cabolt44 Okay, let me explain Gohan was five when he went to Namek. He was six when Goku returned as Goku was only there for one year, not two according to the above comment I replied to. The then three years past so he is nine in the android arc which means he is ten when he leaves the chamber.

If he was 10 when he left the Time Chamber, then it makes sense that he's 11 by the Cell Games. Depends of course on dates, and how canon it is for Gohan to have celebrated his birthday prior to the Cell Games.

They are 10 or 11 they dont start to grow until 12-16

I think one game actually called Teen Gohan “Adolescent” Gohan. Which makes sense. And they did what Carthu said, which is to call the Buu Saga Gohan Teen Gohan.
I know this comment is 3 years old, but Raging Blast 2 refers to Gohan during the Buu Saga (but before getting his potential unlocked) as "Gohan (adolescence)" in Galaxy Mode.

Dokkan Battle actually labels the Gohans right. They have it as:

Gohan (Youth)
Gohan (Teen)
They sadly don't have a Gohan (Adult) for the Dragon Ball Super variant, which kinda sucks, but I wouldn't be surprised to see it implemented.

Yeah, I was always a year or 2 younger than other people in my classes because I was born in november, and some people just started school a year later.
There's also a case of someone being older. Gohan missed a ton of school, him being behind a grade would make sense. Even with him being highly intelligent.

The factor you forgot was Chi-Chi’s over obsessive nature with studying, Gohan’s actual knowledge would be able to place him above his actual age when it comes to schooling.

That "teen" thing is probably an overlooked translation issue. I think English is pretty unique in having "preteen numbers" eleven and twelve. Most just go the equivalent of "oneteen, twoteen"

Its because there not your average beings man use your brains there bodies exceed extreme hights and they gain so much more experience in such early stages its almost stuped to think about age 💀 there there bodies and minds are far beyond any average kids man.
I was a year older than everyone in my graduating class. Registration for classes can cause discrepancies thus Gohan can end up in the same class as them and still be the same age.

Here's a problem with that. In the manga it said he was 16 after the 7 year timeskip.
Killenberg the anime is the problem. The manga is correct. He’s 9(10) in the manga and was 16(17) after the skip. Then the anime added a year to it

It's so weird that gohan was 11 when he clapped cell and he was so ripped while goten and trunks are 13-14 and they look the same way they looked back in the buu saga when they were 7-8
Gohan is the only saiyan to age properly. Goku looked like a kid at 12 too. Goku, you could argue, saiyans age differently. Especially since after reaching adulthood they keep their peak age for many years. Maybe it's possible they stay kids longer too. Even though we didn't know Goku was an alien in Dragon Ball. It doesn't make sense why half saiyans like Gohan would have different rules than Goten and Trunks. It's not like Gohan inherited less saiyan Gene's because he is the only half saiyan to have a tail.
Tyler White genetics. Although he is still half a saiyan, it’s not going to apply the same genetics for his future brothers and sisters, otherwise our siblings would be carbon copies of us. You look at Gohan and it’s pretty obvious he got his height genes from his mother’s side of the family (Ox king perhaps). Trunks and Goten got the wrong end of the stick when it came to their heights (both from their father’s side).

It's pretty safe to assume to ages in Dragon Ball aren't all too consistent, which is funny because in the beginning, the characters ages were pretty easy to follow, it only started becoming a mess when they introduced the Other World, and the Hyperbolic Time Chamber.
I did alot of research of gohan age and he was 9 in the beginning of the android saga and he was 16 or 17 in the buu saga and it was a little confusing how much days he trained in the hyperbolic time chamber bc of google not giving me the answers and confusing how much exp you will get while training in the hyperbolic time chamber and the gravity room

Dragon Ball is set in a weird world. Dinosaurs and other prehistoric animals coexist with super futuristic tech like flying cars, spaceships that travel thousands of lightyears to Namek in a few days (granted, it's based on alien tech but still), capsules, etc. Then things like fat TVs and mobile phones look like they're from the era when the manga/anime were created in the 1980s and 90s, although I think there are smartphones and flatscreens in Dragon Ball Super.

He was more like 10 because of the time chamber but 9 in real world time. Because if I recall it was only about a year and a half or less between gokus fight with Frieza and Trunks coming to warn them. Where as this guy said it was two years, but I think it was more like over a year but not two years. Plus he didn't spend the full year in the time chamber. So Gohan is more like 9 in real world time 10 in the time chamber time. So that pretty much fixes the videos confusion.

MelssuperC it’s because of the fact that hybrid Saiyans like Trunks, Gohan, Pan, and Goten matures at faster rates than full blooded Saiyans, and they even mentioned that fact in the filler arc of DBZ whenever Nappa and Vegeta are about to land on Earth, so despite Gohan being an eleven years old he acts and looks like a teenager in the Cell arc whereas in every arc of Dragon Ball-Super Goku and Vegeta have always acted and behaved the same way all throughout the anime/manga.

The Confusion of Gohan age was due to a change. They claimed he was 11 during the filler birthday episode when in reality he was changing to 10 years old. But the hyperbolic time chamber does make sense to why he would physically be 11 years old. Since a year past but in reality it was day in earth time.
It seems to me that Gohan stay 48 hours (being 2 years) in Time Chamber with his father, not only 24 hours (being 1 year). By the way, I think that we must take in consideration the Rô Kaïo Shin ritual which allow gohan to get to Ultimate Gohan. This event change his body. Anyway, It is said that Saiyans reach their matur age faster than a normal human...

While tfs did make a mistake there it could be because of the original translation during the original airing of the dub they aged up gohan to 5 or 6 and then changed it later which could have caused a lot of confusion on Gohan's age

Goku was also very small at that age, back in the original DB. His first major growth spurt was back when he fought Piccolo in the 23rd World Tournament.

This is all well and good, but try goten and trunks. They should be, what, around 15 or 16? They still look and act 10
Goten and Trunks are 7 and 8 in Buu Saga (Age 774), respectively. By the end of Super anime (Age 780) they are 13 and 14.
Trunks is the same as Yusuke, but looks and acts way younger.
Don't forget Dragon Ball Goku was 13 he was small until he turned 17 towards the end of Dragon Ball. So maybe Goten and Trunks stay small until late adolescence. Remember Sayains age slowly
Wasn't it only a 1 year timeskip till Goku returned? I'm pretty sure it was stated to be the case, meaning doing the Cell Saga, Gohan is 9.
Then following the 7 year timeskip, he's 16.
Then at the beginning of Super, which is a 6 year jump, he's 22.

@@CarthusDojo Future Warrior is not completely correct. Yes Gohan was originally 3. But only in the original Weekly Shounen Jump magazine. It was changed ever since to 4 in Japan. Kanzenshu.com should have the section explaining this change.
Also using the Dragon Balls to resurrect Tenshinhan and Chiaotzu to Trunks arrival was 1 year not 2.

This video makes sense
I liked to think due that Saiyans can just age rapidly due to amount of stress given to that Saiyan, like full blooded Saiyans had to age quickly to maturity to have the best combat experience and advantage due to decades of sending younglings to worlds to conquer, and this could be said true to Goku since when he was 12 he looked like a 6 year old cause he didn't had a threat of death when growing up in the jungle but introduce Piccolo, few years later and boom 18 year old Goku looked like an 18 year old. While Gohan he just grow quickly to deal with the likes for Cell though it was not enough time to reach teen Goku height when Gohan had to fight Cell but if Gohan did had the time like Goku to grow into an adult form then he would due to the stress of combat and near death.
I think this theory make sense since present Trunk still looked like a 8 year old despite being like 18, while his future counter part being in a apocalyptic dystopia, when he was 12 he looked like 12 and when he was 18 he looked like a 18 year old (I don't know the correct age of them but you can see what I implying) like the creator has the character adult to teen bodies of both Trunks and Goten but he did not use it, cause future Trunks is already drawn as a teen to adult and Goten is just a copy paste of Goku, so they have the bodies structure and can do it but they didn't
That said what makes sense that Saiyans living in a peaceful environment doesn't need to grow rapidly to have an advantage of being a adult in combat cause there is no need for combat.
so thinking about this then Zenkais boost must have a hidden ability that makes Saiyans not only grow stronger near deaths but grow and mature the bodies to handle that level power as well (like if you put a 1litre of water it would just explode in a 0.75ml water bottle, so obviously you would have to expand the water bottle to handle that access of water being added)

Always thought Gohan was 10 fighting Cell and just about to turn 11 (birthday being filler of course, his birthday is in May 767 but it's not stated the date there). But Gohan was around 6, 6.5 when Goku came back from Yardrat, 3 years of training I say 9, about to turn 10, then room of spirit and time going in at 9, not a full year, and he comes out at 10 since his real birthday passed in there. So realistically he still could've been about to turn 11 in the room of spirit and time.
Worth noting, Japanese schoolyears start in April so he would be 16 in the Buu Saga if 7 years passed since Cell died. So I think he was 10 when he killed Cell since his "real" birthday had already passed in the room of spirit and time, so basically the outside birthday wouldn't count, to me.

The obvious answer is Toriyama forgot his age had been changed by the Buu saga and if you go by the idea that he forgot that when he wrote Buu, and his birthday is sometime after May 8th so 16 absolutely works
