Shaw Attacks CIA Facility: czcams.com/video/PJcBK2qGPjM/video.html
‘X-Men: First Class’ Failed Darwin and Here is Why
2011’s X-Men: First Class was a welcome return to the X-Men cinematic franchise. It was initially conceptualized as a soft reboot of a franchise that had gone astray; the first breath of fresh air since 2009’s X-Men Origins: Wolverine. It was truly a return to the franchise’s original form that the audience loved so much. Considering that it contradicted the events of 2009’s Wolverine - the dreaded film that showed us a version of Ryan Reynolds Deadpool he isn’t particularly proud of.
But we digress; 2011’s First Class was first class in many regards. It is an audacious film fueled by its main cast’s youthful energy that maintained dramatic power and coherently orchestrated mayhem. Admittedly, it underperformed other X-Men releases at the box office. It was retconned in the prequel to 2000’s X-Men by being followed by the film X-Men: Days of Future Past, but the fans and the critics still loved it. Apart from one single mistake that still haunts the fandom - the death of Armando Muñoz, aka Darwin the Evolving Boy.
Midway through First Class, the film’s protagonist, Sebastian Shaw, invades the CIA facility the young mutants were using as their residence in an attempt to try and recruit them for his own cause - enacting a nuclear war which would tip the world powers into the mutants’ hands. The young mutants try to overpower Shaw, with Havoc shooting an energy blast at Shaw, whose mutation allows him to absorb, reshape, and redirect all forms of energy. Shaw grabs Darwin, portrayed by Kenyan-American actor Edi Gathegi, and feeds him the same plasma energy blast he absorbed from Havoc, after which Darwin dies.
nah he ain't dead he adapted and became pure energy😂

"Adapt to this"
There is literally no reason given in the entire film to even suggest that he couldn't.
So frustrating
He was black so they had to get rid of him.
@@Curse_of_the_moon Yeah, this movie is 11 years old and it still feels weird how they said "oh this guy can survive anything" and then killed him 5 minutes later
didn't darwin turn into like a wraith or a phantom in the comics
when this happened to him? [or something similar]
Tbf it seems as if his body can adapt to the best possible way to survive something, but it isn’t absolute if something doesn’t have a convenient counter there’s nothing he can do. If he’s facing a sword that can cut through everything, he might be able to turn into diamond. But if that sword can cut through Diamond and there is nothing better he can turn into it’s gg.
.
In this scene he was dealing with concentrated energy being given to him internally, the energy seemed hot enough that it could easily go past the melting point of alloys with high melting points. And he was dealing with that shit internally which is several times worse than dealing with it externally.

He became light himself
He actually does in the comics. In certain parts of the world he turns white because it literally gives him a better chance of survival.
It doesn’t get more racist than this scene and this comment. Don’t know which is more pathetic, your bigotry or the fact that some actually liked your bigotry?!!
😂Thank you for that laugh.
This happened to Darwin in the comics, where he absorbed energy, his body was having issues adapting, and he then exploded. All though he died, he came back an issue or two later as a being of energy, later being able to create a physical body. His body became energy to adapt to energy.

Why did you search for this clip if it pissed you off so bad ? Lol saw this in the theaters and everyone was dying at that part 🤣
There was a time in a comic where Darwin was fighting hulk. His body couldn’t adapt enough to counter hulks strength, which had no upper limit. This seems like a dangerous situation for him. And it was. Which is why he adapted. He teleported away. There is absolutely no reason why he couldn’t somehow get out of that danger. If he needs more strength, he gets it. He could have escaped that grasp. He could have teleported away, he could have overpowered him. He could have adapted to not have a mouth (guy can turn into a fucking sponge). His power does more than just make him tougher to kill. It does literally impossible shit to stop it. He can turn smarter if he needs too. If it’s impossible to survive (aka fighting hulk head on) then he gets teleported out of there.
At least kill of a hero that makes sense if you really need to kill off your heroes.
Well, either the writers were aware of the extent of Darwin's capabilities or they were not.
If they weren't, that's poor research on their part and they as a result made a terribly inconsistent decision for no reason.
If they were, then they probably realized that Darwin would be recognized as a borderline impossible to kill character, which raises the issue of "this is an action movie and there's supposed to be life or death stakes to create suspense and that's difficult to do with a character that can adapt to survive anything as a power." (Which raises the question of why they even included Darwin in the first place, and the only answer I can come up with is they wanted to appeal to fans of the more niche x-men characters.) The solution to this problem they went with is the debatable "Why don't we use the incredibly hard to kill guy as a job to establish how powerful our big bad is?" Because it's really intimidating if someone walks up to the tankiest guy in your group and drops him like he's nothing.
Tldr: he's difficult to kill? Kill him anyway, it'll provoke the audience, invest them in the plot, demonstrate the power scale of our villain, and provide motivation for retaliation from the protagonists.
Not diegetic to the source material in the slightest, but when has hollywood EVER cared about that?
@John Xina 😂😂
@@Theantininja
This little trick would probably have worked if they picked basically anyone else. Not including Darwin in the first place was unfortunately the only correct choice in this case.
Let's not forget the time Hela touched him, and rather than kill him, his power turned him into a god of death so he would be immune to the effects of Hela's touch of death

I always hoped to see that eventually. Maybe he will turn up in the MCU, and we will find out that he crossed into another universe to avoid death.
@@shawnparkspost That would be incredible! Not getting my hopes up on that happening, though.
Yea. Me too. They had the BEST "legal" deus ex machina to bring a character back and they wasted It.
Supposedly they thought his power was really hard to explain. They didn't want him to add more confusion to the movie than needed.
Darwin is a mutant that can adapt to anything, mostly subconsciously, with no real control to his power.
He has:
- Turned himself into a rock to survive falling off a clif.
- Became fire proof to survive being in a room with flamethrowers.
- Turned into a spounge after being exposed to a virus that attacks the nervous system, bcs spounges don't have a nervous system.
- Gained the ability to teleport and teleported away from the Hulk while trying to stop him.
- After being touched by Hela ( that kills people with her touch ) his mutant ability made him A GOD OF DEATH to adapt and keep him alive, he them beat the shit out of Hela.
But yeah... let's kill him off so that Magneto defeats the villain later
that becomes no boundaries. just like scarlett witch.
Maybe his subconsciousness isn't always reliable. How is turning into rock helping falling...rocks will get crushed into smaller pieces
Sounds like a bit of a Mary Sue. Probably better to be rid of him, in retrospect.
The mistake was having him in the story in the first place.
His power is not even overpowered or busted, it's straight up HAX and makes every battle against him a non-issue to him.
With this being said, thats one of the very few flaws in this movie, and overall this movie is still great even with this minor issue.
@@qwertyMrJINX That isn't what a Mary Sue is. He has flaws.
He can't control the power, obviously it can adapt in a way he doesn't want it to.
So his superpower is that he can adapt to anything...until the plot requires him to die for no reason. He got done dirty in this movie.

Darwin should not have been a red shirt. Sure, having him killed showed Shaw's true power, intelligence, and ruthlessness, but it was a waste of a great character.
Technically, the trope is the Worf Effect, not a Red Shirt. We knew who Darwin was and knew he was tough to kill, hence having the villain kill him with ease makes the villain more fearsome. But I agree, he shouldn't have been defeated that easily, not permanently at least.

Kevin Bacon is just brilliant. My all time favorite movie of his is "The Air Up There"... but hes done tons of great work, including this. He was definitely the best actor in this film. No question.
In this specific film? No that was Fassbender or Mcavoy.
They were all great! I loved Bacon but my favorites were Fassbender and then McAvoy!
I agree that Fassbender and Mc Avoy performed a little better than Bacon in this film, but I think that’s because their characters are more complex and let the actors display their full acting abilities. Shaw was a very good character, but he was simpler, he was the bad guy with a believable motivation, but lacked the nuances of Xavier and Magneto.
But as an actor, Bacon is top notch and he even made this character very memorable.
PS: don’t forget about Sleepers. His acting there is excellent, and pretty disturbing. And I love his acting in Mystic River too (masterpiece of a film, all actors are at their peaks, and the story makes them shine even more).

@@kabeltelevizio Honestly that depends on what you're trying to achieve with said character. Darwin's power is the ability to adapt to survive anything? Write your story around that power. Yes, Darwin is boring in the sense that he can't be killed, but he can still suffer from emotional distress, he can be impaired, and most important, his power only works to make HIM survive, and he can't control how he adapts. Well it wasn't Alex's blast anymore, as Shaw absorbed it and used his power to concentrate it and showe it down Darwin's throat. People forget, that Shaw doesn't throw back the very same thing they throw at him. He absorbed Darwin's energy, when the guy tried to hit him, you can see, as Shaw stopped Darwin's fist, his own fist enlarged a little (the effect of absorbing kinetic energy). He then didn't make direct use of that absorbed energy, I guess he just added it to the ball created from Alex's blast. Not that this tiny portion of kinetic energy did anything special to that ball, he just added it as a bonus. We see him making direct use of any attack, but he didn't with Darwin's fist attack, he only absorbed it. So what he showed into Darwin's mouth wasn't Alex's blast, it was his own creation from absorbing that blast and any kind of energy after it (Darwin's attack), a combination of different kinds of energy enhanced by his own powers. I guess that's quite enough to alter the form of the original blast from Alex.
It's still a plot hole, why Darwin didn't adapt to it, but it's definitely not the same energy he tanked before.
@@Croftice1 Thats a good theory, but the fact he did that right after he absorb the plasma attack sugest that is only that, like the time he absorb the grenade explosion and then use it against a man, could be his own creation but the situation didnt sugest that
He deserved better.
He's terrific actor. James Gunn should cast him in a Superman movie.
0:09 employee of the month ladies and gentlemen.
his power is literally to survive
It's such a shame that they wasted Darwin.
This scene is what happens when bad writing meets a overpowered character. Darwin once adapted to death itself by becoming a god of death. Even in a movie setting, if a character goes "my power is adapting to survive" this character by default is basically immortal.
Now that I think about it. Darwin’s powers make more sense for the DOFP Sentinals to be able to adapt to any mutant power than Mystique’s own.
What really happened was, Darvin turned into energy, leaving behind a husk to fool the enemy and avoid pursuit. Its just that he took rest of the movie to figure out how to turn back.
I need to rewatch this film, I'd forgotten so many details.
Shaw: Adapt to this.
Darwin: Lol ok *adapts*
Shaw: Shit.
What more can be said that hasn't already been said to death? This scene encapsulates why the source material matters and why doing the exact opposite of the comics when adapting the comics, is a horrendous idea. For reference, in case anyone here doesn't know about Darwin, him dying is the equivalent of Superman not being any stronger than you, or the Flash being able to run at only normal speed.
Shaw: “i am not here to hurt you”
Also Shaw: *kills darwin*
Because he tried to kill him🤔
@@russellwestbrookyellingatw9381Shaw was a Nazi .
He Darwin was black
“If you’re not with us then by definition you’re against us”
“Only a sith deals in absolutes… I’ll do what I must”
"Adapt to this"
**Closes his mouth**
DONE
Darwin was not stronger than the writers pen and imagination…….
Lmao
"adapt to this"
then he adapted to it and killed shaw
the good ending
That one hero who shouts “freeze” against friggin weapons of mass destruction and vets promptly dealt with.
Bro willingly kept his mouth open and swallowed the energy ball… not to mention he could just adapt by simply throwing up the energy ball or turning into the energy itself 😭😭
Probably the most nurfed character ever, Darwin could of survive anything
they killed the unkillable mutant
