  • Blue Water Offshore Vertical Jigging - Ugly Stik GX2 vs Blackfin Tuna
    The forecast was wrong as the waves were nasty. It was rough getting out to the blue water, but I just slowed down and barreled through wave after wave until I finally got out to the deep water.
    With nobody fishing for almost a week due to bad winds, I figured the fish were going to be ripe for the picking on the wrecks. I was right, with the only boats out there being the big Sportsfishers out trolling, I had the wrecks to myself. The first four fish were hook-ups. I switched to the Ugly Stik GX2 and a light jig and ripped it through mid-water column. I was rewarded with a Blackfin that gave the rod a nice workout. I added three more throughout the day. Unfortunately I was not able to run a bigger jig on the bottom to see if I could hook up with any wreck monsters. The new Shimano Trevala XH did hook up with a couple, but I was too much of a little girl to crank down on the drag. In all, it was a super fun day with a lot of hookups and a full cooler at the end of the day making my shore bound friends really happy.

    Rod/reel combo with fishing kit as an emergency setup czcams.com/users/postUgkxntWMOZsO1Zfv-pdn_XuffEtNkTYAYu4Z recommend but started to use this every day. The rod is thick and seems durable. I keep it neatly tucked into a regular backpack all the time with my fishing gear, and can grab it anytime, put it on my back and go anywhere. I just read in another review that the rod length below the reel is adjustable as well, so I will try that too for even more portability. Probably the best setup I've ever owned. I lost the cap for the eyelets, but no big deal since I still have the black cloth sheath that came for the pole and I use that. Very portable and high quality.

    *Awesome rod! I've always been a fan of Ugly Stik and this rod suits my needs well. It is a 2 piece rod but if that is a concern it's nothing a small piece of electrical tape can't fix. Also, that way you can travel with it more compactly if need be. The 7' medium action is perfect for what I fish for. I fish mainly bass and some pan fish and this rod does great with bigger fish yet also still allowing you to feel the fight of a smaller fish.*

    • @KeyWestKayakFishing
      @KeyWestKayakFishing  Před 7 lety

      Yea, getting rid of the combo reel actually makes it a really useable rod. The 6000 pretty much covers most of the fishing that I do. For serious vertical jigging, I think the line capacity of the 8000 would be better.

      Most kind of have to explain it off to their clients. I think it does add a bit of pressure to catch fish. I do have an advantage as most don't vertical jig as it is a tougher technique. I end up getting a lot more hookups and it is a much more exciting way to fish.

I'm going to Mykonos for the month and thinking of bringing this GX2 set up - I like the fact that it is cheap enough where I won't feel bad if it breaks during transit or usage. What do you recommend that I rig it with? I can't find any mention of what line/leader/exact jig weight you're using with this rod in the videos. Edit: Also, can I get away with using the stock reel?

    Steve, have you tried 49 strand v the old 7 strand to try to save some of those cutoffs? I know it might hinder the action a little, but with all the hookups you get you would still be ahead of the game and maybe even see some of those toothy monsters.

      I don't like to use wire overall. I would rather get more bites and lose a few than get fewer bites and maybe catch a couple of toothys. Gotta remember your hookup rates with sharks will increase drastically with wire. That just kills the day.

    Here's a good 1.
    If you ever split the water pickup on the motor again, you could always melt almost any hard plastic as a temporary weld, or a shiv handle but eh

    Out of curiosity,do people that Kayak Fish in the Ocean ever have problems with Sharks,due to the Kayakers close proximity to the surface of the Water,and as a result of that, Sharks would surface out of curiosity,and also while Fishing the Fish caught will Bleed some, and that Blood trail will lead back to the Fishing vessel ,also the Shark/Sharks learn that people are a food source ,or a source of food ,and Sharks seem to understand that someone in a Kayak, or Fishing Boat has food and would hang around for that reason,

    • @KeyWestKayakFishing
      @KeyWestKayakFishing  Před 7 lety +4

      No, they don't care about anything except fish for food. They come around because of the vibrations from a struggling fish that you are bringing in. That is what they care about. On the West Coast/California, you have Great Whites, seals and sea lions, and murky water. That causes attacks on kayaks. We have clear water and there is no mistaking what is what. I have had Sharks bite the rudder because it sticks down but that is because they are being nosy like a dog. You have to remember that they don't have hands to feel anything. They are just wandering around so you know they are not doing it out of aggression.

    Is that the 2 piece GX2 Ultra Light? Also I’d like to see you actually working the jig on it in the video. Do you speed jig or flutter? When you switched to the heavier jig did you go to a 1 ounce?

    Aloha Steve, WOW great jigging action. Good to see you replaced the lame reel the Ugly-Stik came with. Do you not eat Almaco Jacks there? They make pretty tasty sashimi. How far you have to run to get to 300 feet depth. I have to run 3 miles offshore to reach 300 feet on my side of the island. Was there a wreck or seamount out there? Interesting how all your break-offs seemed to be happening on the heavier conventional outfit. Heavier jigs = bigger toothier fish? I'm guessing your ride in was smoother than your ride out with following seas? Mahalo for another great vid.

    • @KeyWestKayakFishing
      @KeyWestKayakFishing  Před 7 lety

      Yea, they are the best of the jacks for eating. Not going to keep one over a Tuna though. It is basically 4 miles to the inside of the reef. 6 miles to the outside edge of the reef. 7miles to 100ft. 8 miles to 300 ft. Then a continual dropoff. It's a wreck so bigger stuff hanging out by the structure. Plus Sharks thrown in the mix. Can start out with a small fish then that gets eaten by something much bigger. Winds subsided later so it was fairly clean run home.

    Hello from Spain,
    Amazing and beautiful video. Like!
    One question, what is the weight of the jig you were using with the Ugly Stik gx2 in this video?
    By the way, is this fishing video in Key West, Florida?
    Thank you very much and keep it up.
