  • Fishing Rod Challenge! Ugly Stik GX2 VS. BIG Sharks
    This video was inspired by Catfish and Carp - Fishing rod challenge! Can I break an Ugly Stik GX2?! • Fishing rod challenge!...
    In his video he attempted to break a Ugly Stik GX2 by lifting heavy objects including his son in a go cart and his boat trailer. Being that fish are more than just dead weight, I wanted to do the same test but against fish. Big fish. Really big fish. So my fish of choice is the Shark.
    I figured I would start with a small shark (Nurse Shark or Bonnet Head Shark). If it survived that, then move up to a shark that was in the 3' to 6' range. After that, it was a matter of getting something big enough to break that rod regardless of size.
    Well the day was successful as I was able to check off the small size by picking up a nice 3' Nurse Shark. After that a 7' Lemon took the bait and after a twenty minute fight, I was able to wrangle him in with no damage to the Ugly Stik GX2.
    All of this was accomplished with the stock combo rod and reel. The only addition being some 20lb Berkley Big Game Mono and a foot of 38lb single strand wire and a 7/0 circle hook. A chunk of fresh caught Jack Cravelle rounded out the rig.
    For the next part of the challenge, I will be looking for something in the 8' plus range or bigger that will break that Ugly Stik GX2....or not.

If you fish like i do, you know the smaller and less stuff the better. I’ve added a photo of just some of my gear so you can see how serious i am about fishing.

Giant Tarpon, sting rays, and many big sharks including a Bull Shark that was well over 300 lbs. I can't believe what I've put this rod through and it never broke. Keep up the good work down there! These Ugly Stik GX2 rods (and Ugly Stik rods in general) are SO WELL ENGINEERED and they come at a VERY AFFORDABLE price and they provide SO MUCH VALUE AND PERFORMANCE for the money.
    I really only use Ugly Stik and Berkley Big Game Power Series rods.
    Ugly Stik’s have the flexible fiberglass tip WHICH YOU NEED so you don’t snap your rod tip like these higher price graphite rods. I Love ❤ fiberglass fishing rods they are so flexible and durable and I like how Ugly Stik uses their patented Howalding process to incorporate fiberglass at the tip of their rods so you don’t snap it on a cast (like I have done in thepast with previous graphite rods) and then have a strong backbone

    Great video!! Not that surprised the rod could take the beating, I was more surprised at how much pressure you could put on the 20 lb. mono without it breaking.

    A very timely video. I had one ugly stick gx2 arrive in the mail today (a 6'0 Light power for Vivian) It's an upgrade from her 4'8 ultra light she uses now so she can cast farther. And I have one of their 8'6 Medium Salmon rods ordered that should arrive any day now. My plan is to use it for shark/ray fishing on our upcoming California trip and then for catfish and carp fishing after we get home. I have 7'0 medium heavy GX2 for my main catfish rod now, but I wanted something a little lighter and longer for beach casting and the Salmon rod was on sale for about $55 after taxes on the ugly stick website.
    One thing I've wondered was how their combo reels would hold up over time. I mean, essentially, they are ten dollar reels. We have two small ones for the ultra light and ice fishing rods and so far they've done just fine, but for my other rods I've been pairing mine up with Kastking's sharky II reels. (A 1500 for the smaller poles and a 5000 for the bigger ones.) It seems like the combo reel worked pretty darn well for you in this video, though!

      @KeyWestKayakFishing  Před 7 lety

      The rods can't be beat. They will outlive any premium name brand label. The reels however are like you said. Basic $10 throw aways. For light use in fresh water, they will work fine, but anything more than that there is a huge jump in performance and quality if you just step up to a name brand reel (even their base line models). If it is for saltwater, and going to be used often, then it is almost mandatory to spend the dollars.
      The reel on this combo was really sketchy. The handle at least felt that way. The drag actually held its own with me thumbing the spool as needed so I didn't put all the weight on the drag system. The rod worked amazingly well holding pressure and even pulling that big Shark in.

    I bought an Ugly Stik Inshore Select GX2 7'0" rod with the split grips but no clear tip. It is graphite composite all the way up the blank. I haven't fished with it yet, but I will when fluke season starts at the end of May.

      Mr. Random , get a 7ft med heavy gx2 pole and pair it with a 6000 penn conflict. put 50lb power pro braid on it. best setup for the money

    • @fornwith4411
      @fornwith4411 Před 7 lety

      How often would going over the line rating make the rod more prone to breaking? The med - heavy gx2 is rated at 20lb at most. Wouldnt 50 be overkill? Just a casual fisherman.
