This was a common practice for steamers commonly seen during departure as the spinning wheel action was clean wheels off from coal and/or oil residue before they were equipped with sanders. However Railway companies didn't like that idea do to excessive ware the wheels and leaving flattened spots on tracks and having to replaced often.
Using sanders while passing through crossrails is prohibited on Polish Railways, but blocking or damaging those would be probably worse. That's why the operator was reluctant to do so.
Zwrotnica to dość szerokie pojęcie. Pozdrawiam :).
@RerailMe, in 1:45 You see a 060DA loco. 060DA has a broken bearing of traction motor and the TEM2 loco is pulling her to workshop. Because wheel was stock we use some oil and thats why we have a wheelslip in TEM2 ;)
First: add sand to increase friction between the wet rails and the wheels. Second: add oil to decrease friction between the sand-covered rails and the wheels.
Oh, no...you missed the scene the wheel crushed all those stones... So when train is on low speed, it is safe to put stones on rail as they serve as sand to increase the friction. Thanks for sharing this!

That makes more sense now. I was wondering what the hell you were talking about when you mentioned tires and sleeper cabs lol. But I figured I would just give the benefit of the doubt haha.
After watching again, good question. We don't even know if he/she had any traction motors cut out. So I'll stick with my first opinion without getting too technical lol. That's just what I do to avoid wheel slip. Heavy grade at my facility when shoving back with railcars attached. At least our consist is two SD 40-2's so it isn't a total nightmare.

on heavy oversize loads (road vehicles, mercedes tractor units) we use the handbrake when they wheelspin, but only because the other option is to back off the power and stop or keep max power on! This bounces all the stuff from the sleeper cab onto the dash and driver etc as the tyres tramp, and , it can turn prop shafts into corkscrews!

The wheelslip and wheelslide polish the rails real good. No wonder the tops are so smooth and shiny that they reflect like mirrors. 😆
Railtops are smooth not because they are polished but rather _rolled_ that smooth by wheels.
