Tigray is a region in the very north of Ethiopia along the border with its former rival Eritrea. It's been in the news recently as since the 4th November 2020 the Ethiopian Army along with the Eritrean Army have been fighting a campaign against the Tigrayan People's Liberation Front (TPLF) for control over the region. The TPLF were the de-facto power in the entire country until the election of Abiy Ahmed in 2018 greatly upset the balance of power in Ethiopia and drew the country to the brink of civil war.

The emperor was keeping his eye on them and after 8 yrs he decided that their presence could have been detrimental to Ethiopias sovereignty and parted ways with them.

@Random Username Its like saying much of Europe and Germany was under American Colonial possession after the war. Does that make sense? People even go as far to say Ethiopia was colonized by Italy for the 4 year occupation. Does that mean France and other European countries were colonized by Germany? Colonization in general is the Indoctrination of the native mind. That just never happen as all the Italians did in Ethiopia was open a breakfast shop and nothing more.

Italy had indeed occupied the major Ethiopian cities for 5 years but there were many areas that were under Ethiopian rule and the fight to overthrow them never stopped, the struggle finally succeeded n Italy was kicked out. As for emperor Tewodros he was betrayed by king yohannes 4th who allowed the British to walk in and guide them to strongholds, not that it matters to u much. And I dare u to call him a coward when he was an inspiration to the betrayer yohannes himself by showing him u do not give your country up to the last drop of your blood. Depending who you ask (Ethiopians/Eritreans or the rest of the Ethiopian ethnic groups) the history of their perspective region is told a bit differently. The dates are also a bit different.
In my opinion, no Ethiopian will ever agree with the narrative that we had the British help to defeat the Italians.
The summery you provided in this documentary is not completely accurate but it is a good starter for conversation.
For example, the people (over half million mentioned) who were killed during the Red Terror were predominantly from the Tigray and Eritrea region. This Terror (and truly was a terror) forced the TPLF to become rebels. Millions more were forced to flee their homes and become refugees. Worth mentioning, the Eritreans (TPLF) fought for 30 years to gain their independence from Ethiopia. The TPLP fought for 17 years to free Ethiopia.
FYI, many people outside these 2 regions don’t even know, until today, what really took place in thees 2 regions. For this reason alone, the history in any documentary will need to be different.
For the sake and future of the country, I do hope we find a common ground to solve our deeply rooted issues especially with ethic division and inequality. No government will be able to solve this problem by simply creating a new party. Any solution will need to be based on honest communication and continued dialogue. The choices and the voices of the people in any region will need to have the same weight.
Looking forward for a peaceful new year, September 11.

I live in Ethiopia, this video is much less biased and much more well informed than most, there are only a few things that were wrong. Ethiopia was never a colony of Italy or England, Abiy is not president, he is prime minister. He did not attack Tigray, the TPLF attacked ENDF members on November 3rd and the government responded. The TPLF were angry ever since he brought their dictatorship to an end. After Abiy declared a ceasefire, the TPLF began to invade the Afar and Amhara regions and have massacred many people, so the ceasefire was called off. And the situation has changed since this video was released. The Ethiopian government has most of the country on its side, a couple days ago, the TPLF tried to come to Addis, but they did not even make it out of Tigray.

Thanks for taking time to make this video. I’d like to clarify a few things about some information, specifically about the Oromo and their role in the history, provided in this video:
The OLA was not founded in 2021. It was the armed wing of the OLF founded in the back in the 1970s. They officially separated from the OLF in 2018 so that the OLF can return from exile and participate in the democratic process Abiy had promised when he came to power. The OLA/OLF were one of the key armed groups that worked to topple the communist regime in the 80s and were involved in the negotiations in 1991 until they were essentially double crossed and attacked by the TPLF. The OLA/OLF have been waging a sustained resistance against the TPLF and later the Abiy regime since then. The Oromo group mentioned as being part of the EPRDF, the ODF, was actually referred to the OPDO until very recently. They were not a part of the original group that fought against the communist regime but rather Oromo Nationals recruited (many of whom had held some kind of regional/local power) by the TPLF to “represent” the Oromia region and its people but in reality were TPLF puppets who did the bidding of the TPLF often going against the interests of the people they’re supposed to represent.
Also the national protests that led you the downfall of TPLF rule and the appointment of Abiy as PM in 2018 was started in 2015 by Oromo farmers in response to the Addis Ababa Master Plan which sought to expand the capital city which would result in the displacement of thousands of Oromo farmers in the surrounding areas. These protests spread throughout Oromia and eventually reached other regions as the grievances of protesters broadened to encompass the overall oppressive tactics of the TPLF led government.
While I understand this is a video that focuses on the history that lead to the current war in Tigray, I think it’s important that we don’t spread misinformation about or minimize the role of the Oromo in the overall history. To that end, I’d also encourage you to look more into the brutality of Menelik II and his use of European supplied weapons to decimate the Oromo population in his efforts to expand his empire as well as Haile Selassie’s bombing of Tigray.
    Thanks! And stay curious 🙂

The EPRDF was an Ethiopian political coalition, so the EPLF was not included. And if I may add at 22:47, it's not quite true that all enemy forces have been removed from Tigray - there are still a notable amount of Eritrean and Amharan troops stationed in various cities across Western Tigray, according to this interactive map:
      en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Template:Ethiopian_wars_and_insurgencies_detailed_map
Isaias Afwerki, the Eritrean president also sent further reinforcements (I have provided a link below) in response to Abiy's cry for help, which in itself was borne out of the escalating conflict within TDF's southern front, particularly near Weldiya as it is a strategic location. I am not sure though why the TDF advanced south, rather than completely control the Tigray region first, but I suspect they could have either faced some heavy resistance, or that the terrain along the Tekeze river was very difficult, even for them who are experts at guerilla warfare.

Tigray were the most patriotic to Ethiopia before the Tigray genocide began in November 2020 and throughout our history. Tigray is the sole reason why Ethiopia has never been colonized. The battle of Adwa was lead by the gallant Tegaru general Ras alula and was fought by majority Tegaru. The Tegaru general Ras Alula and the sole armies of Tigray protected and defended Ethiopia many times during this time period :
There was one individual the Italians, English, Egyptians, & Dervishes feared the most. Ras Alula Engida . Also known as Ras Alula Abbä Neggä "Father of The Morning." . He was governor of Merab Melash (Eritrea). Founder of the city of Asmera, his capital . He defeated every enemy of Ethiopia, never lost a single battle. He defeated all invaders decisively and rose to fame through sheer military strength & skill . Egyptians occupied Massawa & slowly wanted to expand & occupy other parts of Ethiopia. He never let them
1875 Battle of Gundet; annihilated Egyptian invading force,1876 Battle of Gura; destroyed 20,000 invading forces of Egyptian & Europeans advisors with state of the art weapons,1883 English troops destroyed by dervishes. Ask for Ethiopia's help. Alula is sent to deal with the dervishes,1884 Battle of Kufit; destroyed dervish forces that were ravaging Ethiopia's western borders. While Alula is away, England hands Massawa to Italy. Italy slowly expands, Alula declared "the Italians can come & rule in Ethiopia, only if I can rule Italy from Rome. Otherwise, they had no business in Ethiopia & should evacuate every inch of Ethiopia (Massawa included) promptly",1887 Battle of Sahati, Alula comes back from Kufit & fights Italy, 1887 Battle of Dogali, Alula destroys Italian force near Massawa, 1888 Dervishes invade DebreTabor, Alula rushes to Gondar, 1889 Yohaness IV prepares to drive out Italy. But instead rushes to Debre Tabor to help his loyal general Ras Alula, 1889 Battle of Mettema, RasAlula & Yohaness IV destroy dervish forces. Yohaness dies of wounds, 1890 Alula returns to Tigray to discover Italy had occupied his Asmara & rest of Merab/Eritrea, 1896 Battle of Adwa, Alula commands a vanguard army. Kills several invading commanders. During the battle, the Italian general, Barateiri, abandons his troops & runs for his life, Alula is in hot pursuit after the fleeing general. Alula wanted to continue all the way to Massawa, but he had orders to remain put by Minilik.
Much of Ethiopia's proudest history from the kingdom of Aksum, Ethiopia never being colonized and much in between is solely Tigrays and Tegaru history. Once Tigray leaves Ethiopia it can never claim this history as much of Ethiopias proudest moments and kingdoms were done by Tigray and Tigray's ancestors.
King Yohannes IV sacrificed his life to protect Ethiopia from invaders and many Tegaru sacrificed their life to protect Ethiopia from colonization in countless battles like Adwa. Tigray has sacrificed more than anyone in Ethiopia to protect it.
Menelik sold northern parts of Tigray to Italy in the treaties of Wuchale and Feres Mai in 1889 in order to weaken Tigray. To further weaken Tigray he annexed larger swathes of Tigray's fertile lands. Haileselassie brutally suppressed the first Woyane rebellion in 1943 by having the British bomb Tigray over 116 times over the span of 2 weeks beginning on a busy market day and this killed many Tegaru, innocent civilians. After the first Woyane rebellion he banned modern education in Tigray and further annexed more fertile land from Tigray. This allowed him to weaponize starvation (by blocking aid etc) and starve over 100,000 Tegaru to death. Later dictators like the Derg were able to weaponize starvation and starve more than a million Tegaru to death in the 80s. Now Abiy Ahmed is using Ethiopia's notorious action of weaponizing starvation and he has blocked aid, burnt crops, destroyed seeds, ruined soil, and farmland, destroyed food stores, cut off aid routes, and is holding western Tigray alongside our only border to Sudan. Tigray defeated the brutal communist Derg government in the 80s sacrificing over 50,000 of our small minority people in order to liberate the rest of Ethiopia but history has repeated itself and Ethiopia has once again responded to Tigrays sacrifices for it with evil instead of gratitude.
Tigray has done much more for Ethiopia than Ethiopia has ever done for Tigray. Tigray will leave Ethiopia with all our lands before this genocide started and everything damaged and every person hurt will be restored and healed using forced reparations that Ethiopia, Amhara, and Eritrea will have to pay until everything is back to the way it was before the genocide began. Tigray will prosper and become a new nation.

Bro, it was a good historical summary but you’ve messed it up when it comes to when the rebel groups where formed. ELF in Eritrea was formed in 1961. Then EPLF formed as a splinter group from ELF in 1971. Then TPLF came in 1975 four years after EPLF. EPLF( Eritrean and the only party still ruling Eritrea) and TPLF from Tigray became tactical allies against the DERG regime. They EPLF and TPLF also together joined arms and defeated and got rid off the ELF( the first Eritrean front ) in 1981. EPLF( now PFDJ, the brutal dictatorship of Eritrea) formed the Eritrean government in 1991 after its independence, and TPLF created another 3 sister/puppet parties in Ethiopia to form EPRDF governmnet of Ethiopia in 1991. Now the three puppet parties have grown some balls after 27 years and stood up to form the PP party of Abiy Ahmed and fight against TPLF. Relations bwn EPLF and TPLF have sourned in the late 90’s and are now bitter enemies.
