What are "Language Flags?" (And Should They Exist?)

Languages are often portrayed with flags, but often, there seems to be no reason or rime for why one flag is chosen over another. English can be represented with a British flag (correct) or an American flag (incorrect) or some kind of combination of the two. Portuguese is most often portrayed not with the flag of Portugal but that of Brazil. And then when we get to Arabic we have a whole differ...

Disappointing quality. Said nothing about the lion flag's use today, and minimally about its origins. The ax on the flag should be Saint Olav's, and the flag is still used as the royal flag. The video title asks what happened with the old one, so do that.

Too bad the flag became controversial because of WW2. But it’s also ironic because the orange prinsen vlag symbolized the house of Orange, the kingdom and princes but the NSB party weren't supporters of the kingdom. Probably it symbolized in their view the golden age when Holland was economical and military strong en not poor like in the '30s

As a matter of fact there are (at least) 2 Saint Georges. There is a semi-historical Saint George - Saint George of Lydda - who died on 23rd April 303. He was a Roman soldier. However, the other Saint George, the one everyone remembers, is actually a Christian interpolation of an earlier Greek myth. The myth of Bellerophon and the Chimaera. Studying the legends of 'Saint George' and of BELLEROPHON reveals the very close resemblance of one to the other. Furthermore, the well known image of 'Saint George' slaying the 'dragon' is an almost literal facsimile of the icon of Bellerophon and the Chimaera. Don't believe me? See the Roman mosaic floor of the Roman Villa at Croughton in Northamptonshire. There you will see what is clearly the image of 'Saint George and the dragon' with 'Saint George' riding on his horse, spear in hand, thrusting his spear into the dragon below. But this is on a the floor of a Roman villa. You can clearly make out, at the bottom of the scene, the 'dragon' which is not a dragon it is THE CHIMAERA (head of a lion, middle of a goat (the goat's head jutting out of it's back), tail of a snake). Also 'Saint George' is riding on a white horse - a horse with WINGS! This is PEGASUS of the Bellerophon myth. So this is clearly NOT 'Saint George and the dragon', it is a representation of BELLEROPHON AND THE CHIMAERA. However, above 'Saint George' (actually BELLEROPHON) there are four RED CROSSES - the symbol of Saint George. This (at least in my mind) PROVES 'Saint George' is actually the BELLEROPHON of ancient Greek mythology. So the patron Saint of England is a GREEK HERO, not a Christian saint!

The Indians had established themselves as a vibrant cultural community in Jamaica by the 1930s when Rastafarianism began to take root. The cultural independence of the Indians from the whites appealed to the burgeoning urge of Afro-Jamaicans for an independent identity. Similar socio-economic status, familiarity from working alongside in the plantations and intermarriage assisted in the absorption. Affirming the same, Bob Marley’s granddaughter Donisha Prendergast, an actor, film-maker, poet and activist, says, “Sharing energy with the sadhus (ascetics) on the riverbank in Varanasi was parallel to the experience of being with the Rastaman in Jamaica. There’s an old connection between these cultures: when Indian indentured labourers were brought to the Caribbean plantations, they brought with them ideas of spirituality, spices and the beautiful plant that would become a central part of the Rastafari culture

I do like the Prinsenvlag, it's unique and not many countries incorporate orange into their national flags. But it's best reserved for historicity in film, or games. Because the NSB had to get their grubby mitts all over it, and it still gets appropriated by all kind of bigoted and treasonous people, it's just become an identifier for ideologies you will want to avoid now. It's also not like we're a country where we need to fly a flag to feel proud. Unless it's a holiday, or you graduated. Then you let it hang out with a pennant or school backpack, and buy a nice, creamy tompouce. Now that's a point of pride we can all relate to.

My Dutch wife and I talk about this a lot actually. I am constantly like, "Holland literally brings back Orange and goes BACK to monarchy while everyone else is killing their monarchs, yet keeps the rotated French flag... why not be different?!?" It is so sad that the NSB used this flag. In the US, we have something similar with the Gadsden Flag of yellow with the rattlesnake reading "Don't Tread on Me." This flag was 100% nothing but anti-England and pro-American revolution. Yet, a few nasty folks start using it at rallies and BAM, a great symbol of freedom is turned into a racist symbol ;(
