    This is the best analysis of Dp2 (And there is seemingly more analysis’s floating around than spice in the air) Love that you drop knowledge and jokes in equal measure! Big Fan!! What a Picture!! Can’t wait to see it again!

    Just came back from IMAX. I loved it! I actually liked the changes, especially to Chani at the end. Would have loved to have seen Alia as depicted from the book, but I understood the challenges.

    Incredible film. Keeping it closer to the books wouldn't have made it a better film. Great conversation too.

    The "swoop in and save them" plan the princess suggested is the same plan the Baron was going to use with Feyd taking over for Rabban.

    Some book readers whose comments I've read online, seemed stuck on such minor plot points. I'm glad that DV got the essence of the books and worked so hard to convey the big messages in such a spectacular and compelling way. Book sticklers can go to hell, Herbert would be proud of Denis

      Ok, about to go on a rant that will probably be filled with spelling and grammatical errors but …
      Actually, book readers don’t have to go to hell or go anywhere at all. They have to understand that Herbert wrote a book and not a screenplay. There’s significant difference between a book and a screenplay and how to communicate across the different medium. That’s why we have both. Both the movie and the book will survive critical reviews because they are both powerful and very well crafted. I don’t understand the obsession to conflate the two medium. The movie doesn’t cancel or diminish the book. Book readers getting upset is a little embarrassing frankly. It betrays may be a lack of faith in the power and endurance of the book and in Herbert’s writing. Or perhaps a complex that “book readers” have as it relates to how they consider “non-book readers.” I’ve read all of Frank Herbert’s Dune books (still have to finish Chaperhouse) and think they are works of art. I’m also excited to see different artists like DV internalized and interpreted that work. I hope many other people discover and make Dune their own. It doesn’t belong to Frank or to you or to me. It belongs to the world. I feel that book readers can’t acknowledge that part.

      It’s an adaptation and he nailed capturing the essence of it - the core messages. Slavishly mirroring every last page wouldn’t have worked

      The essence of the books? Where is it explained or even implied that thinking machines are outlawed after they nearly exterminated the human race? That's the entire reason you have Mentats, Imperial conditioning, Bene Gesserit training... it's completely missing from the film. Not even hinted. Anyone who hasn't read the book would easily be under the assumption that AI and computers are all over the place. Why wouldn't they? We are never told otherwise. Or why. Essence, you said.
      What about spice? It's watered down to "it makes people rich". Gives Paul (and only Paul) weird visions. Makes eyes blue. That's it? The "Great Houses" showed up in orbit of Arrakis in what couldn't have been more than 45 minutes in the movie. Completely trivializes one of the main "essences" of the books: space travel is hard, without spice there is no space travel. Without the Spacing Guild (completely nonexistent in part 2), there is no space travel.
      Shai-Hulud is just an epic mount for the Fremen. No essence.
      I don't know what movie you people were seeing... The essence from the source material is completely gone, replaced with cool visuals and Hans Zimmer. Which is fine, but just say that. Pretending the source material wasn't borderline neglected ain't it.

    Loved the deep dive analysis video guys, really looking forward to the second half and you earned yourselves a sub in the meantime!
    Only bit of feedback I’ll give is you might consider a foreword about the use of language and adult humour in your video. While obviously you wouldn’t be expecting kids to watch your video, I’m glad I listened on my earbuds instead of the TV with my kids within earshot 😉
    Whilst loving both part 1 and part 2 of Denis’s Dune adaptation, I do have mixed feelings about some of the changes and omissions from the book and was leaning towards feeling more disappointed as time went on. I still feel a bit mixed but am more accepting of the changes now thanks to some of your viewpoints and discussion of them plus I really feel the all but officially “green lit” part 3 adaptation of Dune Messiah will resolve quite a few of the matters that part 2 leave up in the air from either being left out or changed, especially with Alia and Chani.
    I guess one can only hope though since I’m not Bene Gesserit 😜

  • @azmodanpc
    @azmodanpc Před 4 měsíci +4

    I am a little wary of potential changes to Dune Messiah and hope that DV will:
    Spoilers for the book:
    > Do the time skip right this time (I did not particularly mind that they compressed 2 years or so in 8 months in part one), it needs to be the right amount for the romance between Alia and Duncan ghola / Hayt to happen, since it's imho an important point in the story.
    > Chani needs to be the mother of Leto II and Ghanima (they took out the first son they had and that was killed by the Harkonnens, fine) but I hope she's not already pregnant with him at the end of this movie, since the Irulan slipping her contraceptives in order to father a child with Paul has to happen organically.
    > Insert as much of Children of Dune as possible (or do a part 4, that would be awesome) and show the end of Paul and the beginnings of the Golden Path (the passing of the torch from Paul to Leto II like it was shown in the mini series).

    • @JCDenton3
      @JCDenton3 Před 4 měsíci +2

      I don't think they will do just about any of that. It is financial suicide to change your actors to older ones now or do goofy old age makeup. They will probably do a small time jump and completely rewrite the script based on where this leaves off. Chani doesn't love Paul, her love is for the Fremen race and only briefly liked him for like a month or two when he was becoming Fremen but by the end of the film obviously leaves him. I am betting my money now she will be the one trying to assassinate him in the next one instead of the original assassination plot, she will pretend to get close to him just to try and maybe even succeed in killing him since this next one will be the last one, no Children of Dune or anything else.

    • @azmodanpc
      @azmodanpc Před 4 měsíci +1

      @@JCDenton3Yeah, they'll merge Chani and Korba, she'll have Leto II as son (perhaps she's already pregnant with him at the end of Dune Part Two or something). Paul will try to protect her but Irulan and the Guild will betray her or something and she'll die. Paul becomes blind after the assassination, goes into the desert and Alia becomes regent raising Leto II and Ghanima alongside Jessica (changed from the books, where she bolted during Messiah and returned to Arrakis at the beginning of Children of Dune). Don't know how and if they'll fit Duncan ghola in this whole reworked stuff.

    1:20:38 this part bothered me a lot, it feels like they could have lase gunned the harvester from the start, why bother taking out all the guards and orni when you have sniper rifle lasers that will blow up the whole thing. And we know the harvester could not deploy a shield to create the shield lase gun explosions because that would agro the worms.
    That whole part felt contrived to give Timothy and Zendia some cool action scenes.

    I appreciate the in-depth review and deep dive into the movie. You guys are great. Confused on a few things:
    Are not all reverend mother Bene G's? To go through a ritual like they have on Arrakis, it seems like they'd all have to be.. no?
    And I'm trying to understand how come they can have like "super powers" like controlling their cells but the voice isn't "magic" or a power.
    And we accept that they can magically know past generations' memories but they're not magical like witches.
    Are Paul's visions of the future not like a magical power once he drinks the Water of Life?
    To me, there's clearly supernatural stuff happening in the movie. I've only listened to part of the book.My confusion is that I feel like y'all alluded to everything that seems like a superpower is just because people have trained themselves and reached their fullest NATURAL potential.

    The first takedown of a harvester was kind of nonsense.
    All that one on one fighting, the battle to take down the ornithopter,.. only to then have two gigantic lasers cut down the machine like it was made of butter.
    Why not use those doohickies to start with? Talk about OP Lazeguns! (and no, that one little ship wasn't casting shields or covering all attack directions at once)

    either you guys are; superhuman stenographers, AGI Ai's with perfect recall or,.. maybe, just maybe, you harnessed the power of peer to peer.
    No Judgement,.. they really realy owed you guys a copy for the work you're doing!

    “Irulan shall be my wife…The princess shall have no more of me than my name... no child of mine, nor touch, nor softness of glance, nor instant of desire.”
    I really enjoyed Chani’s development in the movie. She was one dimensional in the book, BUT I’m not a fan of the ending. Major missed opportunity by DV. Paul’s love for Chani is absolute.

    • @JCDenton3
      @JCDenton3 Před 4 měsíci

      Their love story was totally botched, I never got the impression she genuinely loved Paul at any point, even her famous line from the trailer is that her love is conditional. They also only had a relationship for a few months at most before she leaves him at the end, so there is no convincing way they'll patch everything up offscreen and be trying to have kids. I think people are being to slavishly faithful to the books when thinking where it will go when the movie is screaming at the audience it is not going to follow those steps and to be prepared for a radically different finale.
