I once experienced the reverse of this on CZcams I was watching one of those GoPro walk through beautiful city videos and around 40 mins in the video started showing weird politically charged and hateful content. I noped so out of the video, it felt like a fever dream. I got reverse stealthed but much less wholesome or personable.
Great podcast. I also love Star Wars. Was never into gate keeping, or hating on other franchises. I’m 49, was an 80s kid. Grew up with the toys. Didn’t get into the books until way later during the prequels, just after Episode 2. I liked the Republic Commando video game, read the books, then read the rest of the prequel era books and just about everything else afterwards. While reading through the six Dune books, I enjoyed picking out everything Lucas took from Dune. Was surprised it even went into the prequel movies. So yea, I love it all. Actually, it was Fantasy that got me into reading in the 90s. Started reading the Conan The Barbarian books and comics, read Lord Of The Rings shortly after. I first read the original Star Wars trilogy and just the first Dune book at that time as well. I was more into Fantasy and Sword & Sorcery at the time, so I stopped there with Sci-fi. As far as Sci-fi shows, Star Trek Next Generation and The X-Files were my two big tv shows in the 90s. I eventually read all the X-Files books and comics. So there you go. Some of my personal favorites other than Dune.
It would be so funny if this conversation happened at the beginning of the podcast before they got to the episode topic 😂😂
Hi guys, totally agree! Good term for it too. Thanks for all of your wonderful and relevant discussions!
Listened to this episode on a road trip and started watching some of your recommendations when we got home, starting with Midnight Gospel. Thanks for refilling our ‘to-watch’ list and reminding us of old favorites like Cowboy Bebop. Your suggestions are always so good. Thank you.
0:33 might be a meeting of the Landsraad before the Corrino emperor, with Valya and Harrow Harkonnen
0:24 is Jihae who's Reverend Mother Kasha
I have faith that HBO's Dune Acolytes are going to be significantly more interesting and better written that Disney's Star Wars Acolytes
Brave new world tv show on Peacock was soo good! Highly reccomend a watch! 🎉
CORNBALL NERDS
I enjoy the discussion for the most part, but I can't listen anymore due to the heavy overuse of the following words: weird, bro, dude, fuck, fuckin', sus. It's too much and it's annoying.
Very interesting listening to these post Dune Part Two
I am very nostalgic for this movie which I believe has a lot of great elements (despite the double-down on the homophobia and body shaming that is right out of Herbert's original work). I do enjoy Gom Jabbar podcast quite a bit, but i felt from the outset the MST3K approach wasn't going to let anything even slightly inspired breath. If you felt the added bonus of being a Lynch fan and knowing his beloved cast, this movie can still be enjoyed. Afterall, its an adaptation, when did Hollywood serve a book to accuracy?!
Abu - Frank Herbert was respectable of local cultures?!! He is perhaps the most homophobic writer of the 20th century.
Scyfy version of Dune is the best and most true to the book. David Lynch made a noble attempt, but the tale simply cannot be told in +/- 2 hours. Alec Newman fit my image of Paul Atreides. (Don't even get me started how anemic was Timothee Chalamet.) William Hurt played a respectable Duke (I slightly prefer Jurgen Prochnow - Oscar Isaac's was predictably wooden). Rebecca Ferguson was all too wrong in Denis's take, although I did enjoy Charlotte Rampling as the Reverend Mother.
I *loooooove* the mailbag episodes!
That pitch sounds amazing
I love both as well. My favorite Star Wars books are the Republic Commando series by Karen Traviss. It’s about a squad of Clone troopers fighting in the Clone War, told from their perspective. The life of a clone trooper is truly horrific. We can all say the litany against fear, to live long and prosper with the force.
Really enjoying this pod cast! Do you guys have plan to cover the book 2 and 3 in the future?
We plan to in the future, yes! No dates set in stone yet.
As long as they don't have sisters shooting beams from their eyes or fingers, it actually looks watchable. Their wanting power up front and centre, could serve as a lesson for the future. Better to stay in the shadows. Not being a fan of Brian and Kevin's books, hopefully they also use some source material from the Dune Encyclopedia which Frank Herbert actually endorsed as well as from Heretics and Chapterhouse which are almost exclusively about the Bene Gesserit. I like that it shares the visual feel of Denis Villeneuve and Greig Fraser.
This is very noiceee
Wow. Just Wow. And that is not a comment on the trailer.
I reread the books recently and have to say the book Chani is so much deeper, I find it funny that people act like she had less agency in the book. People act like she caves to Paul but it is perhaps more wisdom. Like Jessica before she knows the only way to influence Paul is to be with him. Movie Chani leaves in a tantrum, leaving him to be more brutal with her departure. Its dumb especially if she loved Paul. Chani does contradict Paul she just does it slyly like Jessica. Movie Chani acts like she has no flaws and does not really love as she does not accept all of Paul, let alone the realities of the world they live in. Book Chani is so much wiser and more clever. I think it is safe to assume, especially after the books that come later that Chani indeed gave Paul consul that steered him in directions all the time.
To me it looks so similar to DV's that how can you tell, from an aesthetic point of view, that this happened 10,000 years before Paul? 10k years is a freaking long time! surely technology and culture was different back then, no? I also would like to see some leftovers of the machine crusade, but none of that was shown. I just hope i'm wrong and they have a good story, I really want this universe to keep growing.
That's a good point! It's an issue lots of prequels struggle with.
That sister on the throne line has me really spooked.
Interesting and overall looks good but i dont like the line "We are playing god and we will be judged for it". That sounded naive and very unbene geserit. Ofc they are playing god. Bene geserit were creating religions for their own purposes, they were smart, powerful and arrogant enough to feel resposnsible to steer the human race, to steer its evolution.
Maybe this is a SPOLER, but if I remember correctly, most of the sisters didn’t know about the extensive nature of the breeding program in the early stages of the order. Only Valya, the protagonist of this show, who was the right hand to the then Mother Superior, and a small circle of sisters were aware of it for quite a while. So it is plausible to think that other members would have some type of dilemma about it. Or maybe the character is referring to the missionaria protectiva, cause I believe (even though they didn’t show it in the trailer), the series will chronicle how the lisan al gaib myth was planted into the fremen culture.
@@istvan7301 Maybe, maybe it will make sense. I just hope they dont make out of Bene Geserit heart bleeding good doers, becasue they were analytical and ruthless, even if they had a higher good as goal
I can't help but suspect that the "putting a sister on the throne" story indicates that this is partly the story if how they figure out they need to be the power behind the throne and not on the throne. That they try to be the power on the throne and this story is about how that doesn't go how they'd like and they figure out not to do that. Like... it's getting their fingers burned, so to speak, so they learn fire is hot. Is you will. Also, the trailer indicates tension within the sisterhood in the show, so I'd imagine to some degree its the story about factions, with probably one faction wanting direct power in the throne and another faction wanting indirect power (and possibly other factions as well). That's just the vibe I get from what we're seeing. It's giving "game of thrones" and I'm imagining this is at least partly a story of the sisterhood figuring out the way they win the game of thrones is by not sitting on the throne at all. And they say in the trailer this is before they were known as the bene gesserit, so - again - I think that's indicating this story is about how they became the bene gesserit we know in the books which, to me, indicates being or attempting to be something different first, before solidifying into the structure we know. Which would seem to require trying things quite different in this before story. Just my instinct.
I enjoyed the trailer. Looks good. I never read the non-Frank Herbert books. I don't plan to. These days I just like rereading the basics. I'm hoping and guessing it will at least be an entertaining generic sci-fi show. I'm more forgiving when it comes to adaptation. I'm one of the few who enjoyed Rings Of Power. It wasn't good. But I thought it was entertaining generic fantasy TV. Along the lines of The Shannara Chronicles and The Wheel Of Time shows. Not great, but good enough for a TV show. I'm always happy to see more Dune on screen. It's going to be a while until Dune Messiah. This should tide us over until then.
SO pumped for this series and its coverage by these two insanely attractive hosts!!
Yasss so excited for your coverage! 🙌
How does one get off a worm is my question? Right lol
Great episode. Some interesting thoughts. This is still my favorite book series. Duncan is my favorite character. I like that he’s the only character in the series to experience every book in a way. Did you guys ever pick up Sci-fi miniseries Blu-Ray collection. It came with this Lego Sandworm diorama here in my profile picture. It’s a fun easy build. I saw your video on the Lego Ornithopter. I’m currently building that. Working on bag #6. I’m having a blast. Thanks again for the great videos and podcast. 👍
We've covered the Sci-Fi miniseries in depth on previous episodes!
I’ll watch this once I’m done with the series❤
Okay, so if Suk conditioning doesn't assassinate an Emperor, then how does the Harkonnens discover a way to break the Suk conditioning, and how come the Harkonnens can't control Arrakis, with their 4d chess mindset? I get what you mean now how this is a plot hole for Yueh...
I haven't watched you guys yet, but I'm confident in saying that the later books are gold, but only if you hold to the core ideas in the first three novels. Being able to have in the back of your mind that these iconic figures, Muad'dib, Leto the second, and Siona, are all struggling to push humanity forward, and prepare them for the Kralizec, then you can go forward into Heretics with the mindset that Leto has set humanity along the path to survival against humanities greatest enemy. I get it that "Dune," will always be the peak, but, in my opinion, the first novel enhances the second story, and then it enhances the third, ect.
The Dune universe still has to learn from Star Wars and Star Trek
Thanks for rereleasing these. Just started a reread of this series again.
Paul/The Preacher makes a very similar statement talking to Gurney Halleck in the preceding book, Children of Dune: “‘To be a god can ultimately become boring and degrading. There'd be reason enough for the invention of free will! A god might wish to escape into sleep and be alive only in the unconscious projections of his dream-creatures.’” I honestly think that goes even harder.
Interesting. Very much a foreshadow as well
Love this deep dive into Gallach! When reading these chapters, I wondered how much Frank intended the language to resemble a futurised Gaelic. There's quite a lot of content out there about Frank's allusions to Scottish/Irish culture (albeit much more subtle than the outright lineage tracing to Greek myth, Roman/Spanish gladiator-teoubador, and the Egyptian Pharaoh pattern). For example, Caladan has been compared frequently to 'Caledonia' (Scotland), and Hans Zimmer and Denis Villeneuve in Dune Part 1 even goes as far to represent this explicitly in the use of Highland Bagpipes at the Atreides' landing on Arrakis. On the other hand, with the mention of Gallach being the Language of the Courts, is that an illusion to Gallic (French) as the language of law in both modern times within the EU/UN but more prudently within the Feudalist system of the Medieval age? All Royalty and knights in Europe would have spoken French as the language of the court, as well as other languages of their respective people. It strikes me that Frank is trying to tie up all of Earth-Human culture into one monoculture in the far future; this is a pattern which makes sense given real-life cultural trajectory of globalisation, but also particularly pertinent in the Cold War when Frank was writing, given it was effectively a cultural war between capitalism and communism.
Love you guys podcast
You guys are so funny it hurts absolute nerd madness. Thank you I love it.
You guys are absolutely funny and smart and I love every second of each episode I heard until now. Great chemistry and like I wanna be there talking with you guys about all the jokes. Like it's great really. Cheers
Regarding the Adam and Eve line, I assumed it was commenting on how we as a society often forget that a lot of negative stereotypes and clichés about women are manufactured by men, since patriarchal systems have dominated human history. Case and point, the Eve biting the apple myth portraying women as untrustworthy: obviously men in power would propagate that to subjugate women. In the context of GEoD, I suppose Leto is telling Hwi that even though she was made by the Tleilax and Ixians, he doesn't let that cloud his perception of her, despite what others would want him to think.
Chani role.is the books is what her cha6is supposed to be her role is exactly what it is suppsed to be. The book is about paul atreides. People are only wanting to give chani all these roles.to do simply because they casted zendaya snd they have to justify that
Malky, we hardly knew ye

Love the pod. Can you please note which chapters these page numbers are on. I’m listening via Audible and there’s no way to tell what page number 420 is in the book. Google is no help. Thanks!

Hhehe, sad for You, they "DELETED" his character from entire movie - both parts. Dennis truly botched this version when it comes to source material
