- In this Video Essay, we take a look at Dune Part Two by acclaimed Science Fiction director Denis Villeneuve. After the success of Dune Part One, Villeneuve has backed up his incredible start to the franchise with one of the best Sci-Fi films of the decade. Not since Jackson's Lord of the Rings have I watched films of this length and thought: "This could have been longer."

I suffer from brain rot like the rest of society, but I didn't experience a single dull moment throughout the entire movie. I was blown away again and again while watching it. When Paul arrived in the South... Wow.

@paintspot1509 nah. I think this movie captured the "ancient future" aspect even better than the first movie! The opening scene itself with the red eclipse was so captivating, nothing on earth would match that environment. Except for the scenes with the emperor and the princess, nothing was earth-like imo. This film took its cinematography very seriously.
Its funny how this feeling is conveyed in the books as well.. and translated so well in the film. I think its because we see so many gadgets but no wires at all. The human mind is the only computer in that universe.
My only complaint is that’s it not long enough, GIVE ME MORE DUNE.

Seriously! I said the same about Part 1. I doubt it will happen, but I would love a 4 hour cut of each part.
Part 2 packed in A LOT, easily could have been 3.5 or 4 hours. It had a ton of ground to cover, felt a little rushed at a few parts, but Denis did a phenomenal job of walking that tightrope.

He works with a team and a new up and coming composer every time - it’s a win win because the new composer gets the experience and connections plus the opportunities that only Han Zimmers name can get and Han Zimmer gets the credit because he knows that his name is a brand itself at this point plus he can help the next generation of composers.

This movie is what Hollywood NEEDS to do. Hire a director who actually understands the source material and who has a unique vision in adapting its storyline from literature to cinema.
I don’t 100% agree with the changes he made, but it was still a very good movie. Further, it wasn’t created with malice towards the source material, which is refreshing on its own

Books are inherently the ideal way to tell stories as they require at least a modicum of mental engagement: your mind has to create its own image of what you’re reading which takes a lot more effort than zoning out

What an absolute masterpiece. Did not want it to end. The Harkonnen Arena scene was beautiful cinematography!
And the sound design, with all music, chants, announcements in their language during arena scene. Crazy good.

Dune Part Two puts other blockbusters to shame. It is astounding how much better this is, both technically and story-wise. It shows how incredible a film can be when every single person working on it is on top of their game and there is a clear vision from the director.
It is true. You can tell he had control. And the actors and others understood the mission and they really nailed it. They also made a PG-13 movie feel like a rated R movie. No corniness. No unnecessary sex scenes. A no nonsense movie.

I'm not even a huge sci-fi fan, but this movie immediately became one of my all-time favorites, already getting goosebumps thinking about it

And this is exactly why Frank Herbert had to write Dune Messiah. 😂

Because all of Paul's "enemies" were so incompetent that he may as well just take over the galaxy.
My smoking hot take: I'd argue that Dune ends exactly where it needs to and Messiah onwards were ultimately unnecessary. The Known Universe at the start of Dune is a toxic artificially constrained civilization (the Bene Gesserits, the Butlerian Jihad laws, the Spacing Guild, the chronic dependancy on Spice, ect) and ending Dune with Paul becoming the scourge of the galaxy who would do away with all of these deep-seated establishments (even if he's remembered as a tyrant for all time) was the perfect ending imo. Everything after that was just Herbert wheel spinning and avoiding truely changing his universe. That's how I feel at least.
@@friedpickle8332 Frank Herbert was trying to deliver a sermon to the masses, but people completely misunderstood the message. I don’t doubt Dune is a complete package, but evidently some important messages are worth repeating.

Precisely. Paul is no mere, uncomplicated hero. He may be the anti-hero for a while. Chani might well have to step up and be the real heroine the universe needs. It is a little disconcerting, though. Most black women in today's world are spiritually devout.

Denis Villeneuve's team was so dedicated to every detail. I can still remember Chani blowing the ornithopter, and you can actually see its explosion inside its sheild, which was nuts
Since the source material came out in 1965 and influenced so many of the other sci-fi greats, claiming the Dune movies as some of the greatest ever even so recently after release makes a lot of sense. The story/characters are timeless and the modern cinematography and visual effects brought them to life on the big screen.
I agree about TLOTR. I took my teenage cousins to see DUNE 2 in the cinema and they are so obsessed now that they want to read the books (they bought them immediately after), get posters, buy soundtracks etc. It reminds me of 2000 when I watched "The fellowship of the ring" and became obsessed with it.

Best feeling. I did the same with my family. I made them watch part one, then they were itching to watch part two. When we all finally saw it, everyone was just bustling with reactions and theories and discussion. It still lives rent free in our minds today lol best feeling to convert your family!!!!!

the soundtrack is stuck in my head since part one. It's so good and different from almost every other movie soundtrack. Zimmer deserved that Oscar!
I have no problem calling this one of the best sci-fi movies of all time. The pacing was perfect for me and each scene had meaning and carried the story forward. I will see it again soon.
Pacing was perfect? people teleport across the planet and galaxy at will. There are years missing and some extremely underdeveloped characters.

I heartily concur. I have watched scads of sci-fi films over decades and this magnificent masterpiece of Denis Villeneuve is definitely one of the best. The pacing was perfect and the masterful use of Jessica's pregnancy and Paul's eyes turning blue as time-jumps in the writing is so good I got goosebumps.

The brilliant idea of using Jessica's pregnancy and Paul's eyes turning blue as time-jump devices is clear to people actually paying attention to the film. Agreed! I watched The Batman in theatre and loved it. Oppenheimer at home and Dune 1 and 2 at home. Oppenheimer for me was okay. But both Dune movies really left me in awe.
SILCENCE. Chills 😮 i didnt know Timothy was THAT level actor but oh boy he is. Best actor at the oscars no doubt. Austin butler fantastic psychotic, Javier Barden WOW, rebecca Furguson was magnificently chilling, Zendaya gave a beautiful performance, Butista portrayed a man who released his fear through anger, awesome nuanced performance, Lea de suex (i think shes called) WOW great performance, and florence pugh Became a literal princess that i didnt even see the actress behind the character. Movies dont get better than this
Fully agree on all counts. I remain esp. stunned by how fully convincing Timothe made Paul's journey from fear and determination to avoid the upcoming Holy War to his acceptance of it.
Agree, especially on Timothy. I thought he was ok and had potential, but holy hell he gave us a truly incredible performance (and that is to put it mildly, I was blown away by the scene where he first steps up to the task as kwizats haderach)
It blows my mind people say this. Both T and Z gave very poor performances. They seemed out of place and almost like they didn't want to be there. They also have 0 chemistry together which was another reason their romance seemed forced and stale.

@@paintspot1509 I just saw it and I can't disagree more. Sifi usually can't get romance right. (see Starwars prequels) I totally bought into their attraction and watching them both make hard/painful decisions at the end felt very real to me.
I knew when I was in the theater that this was one of the greatest science-fiction movies of all time. I’ve only been home for an hour since watching the movie and all I can think about is going back and seeing it again. This will definitely go down as one of the best.
The greatest testimony for the movie is that I watch it twice over fairly short period of time. Both times I did not feel like a 3 hour movie, it is that masterfully paced that 3 hours feel like nothing.
It really feels like these actors left their ego at the door knowing that this was going to be one of the best movies ever made.

Not necessarily. But they are all excellent and with something to play with. If you're a professional, and a real actor, you get something incredible to work with. Ego isn't necessarily bad, but yes, I did not hear about social media stupid claims or shitting on anyone.

@@paintspot1509 I personally didn't get such feeling. And the other persons that watch the movie also felt like the couple seems credible. I found the love story often touching and bringing a nive romantic vibe to the movie, that it otherwise very dark and harsh, balancing the tone.

@@paintspot1509 ?!? Timothee and Zendaya are great friends. Zendaya introduced Timothee to her beloved Tom Holland and they enjoy each other's company as pals. Timothee described Zendaya and Tom as "Good Hollywood!" Timothee even became such good pals with Zendaya's assistant that he attended the assistant's birthday party. Timothee danced up a storm. So did Zendaya. And their chemistry onscreen in DUNE was HOT. They are great actors who channeled the warmth of their friendship into a steady fire onscreen. Even the director, Denis, said he could feel it.
My revelations in the cast are Timothee and Austin Butler. I always knew Timothee had the acting chops to pull off Paul but Austin was totally chilling as Feyd Rautha. He did so well.
As a long time Dune fan who thought we would never get the movie we deserve, I am so happy to see it come to life the way it has in this movie!

As a HUGE Sci Fi fan of over 30 years, this film FLOORED me in the theatre. I have already purchased my ticket to see it again tomorrow, this time in IMAX. I've already seen the first one at least 10 times. This will likely exceed that once it hits Pay TV. I don't care if I EVER see a DC or Marvel film again. Just randomly watched Aquaman 2. What utter TRIPE. These DUNE films give me hope for ongoing Cinema and is causing people to fall in love with going to the movies once again.This reminds me of the excitement of seeing films as a kid again, like i experienced with the LOTR. That is saying something.

If you are comparing dune with marvel to show that it is a good film, then you are watching the wrong films.
I gonna watch a movie in a theater for the first time in at least a decade. But this movie deserve a big screen.
This was the last film that Mom and I saw with Dad on its opening weekend before his untimely passing from his aortic aneurysm on the morning of March 6, 2024. We all loved seeing that movie at the theater. I miss you, Dad! 😢
It's good to get the view of someone who has never engaged with Dune outside of Villeneuve's movies. As a long time fan of most things Dune, I'm glad you enjoyed it. I lay the success of both movies to Denis' ability to capture scale. Arrival is like him cutting his teeth on scale, but with Dune he's chowing down on a buffet of scale. The story of Dune requires that scale.
I've never read Dune, liked the first movie, was absolutely blown away by the 2nd.
Tried to get a copy of the book from a local used store, but unsurprisingly none are in. Ordering the book tho. Must read asap. What an amazing story.
Never read Dune myself. The Lynch version came out when I was 13, and the only reason I went to see it was because The Police at the time were my favorite band and Sting was the big draw for a lot of people. I never enjoyed or understood it.
Enter Dune and Dune 2. I went to see part 2 because I was invited to go (free ticket and popcorn!). I understood most of what was going on (hearing impaired) but left the theatre with a “WOW”! One of the best movies I’ve ever seen, in every way!
3 days later I finally downloaded part one. I’m glad I did, because this part answered a lot of questions I had during part 2. Superb!
I can’t wait to download Dune 2 and watch both movies back to back!
I would’ve welcomed a 4 hour version with open arms. Like many others say, this movie is living rent free in my head, so is the score.
I personally would put it up there with the greats of Sci-Fi... the depth of the world-building, the thought through, detailed set designs, suits, weapons, characters, etc. is astounding for an adaption of such a strange concept for a sci-fi setting. The acting is on point. The directing is amazing. The creative choices and cinematography are the best we've ever seen. And the story deals with deep, real-feeling concepts of politics, religion, ethnicity, culture, etc. that most films don't ever reach.
Plus, as a Star Wars fan, it feels good to have a new sci-fi trilogy to look forward to watching, up there with the Original Trilogy of Star Wars, with interesting weapons, planets to explore, etc. Especially since Star Wars has completely fallen off as of right now.
"Depth"? Where was the spacing guild? You know, one of the most important factions in the dune universe.
All of these political and religious concepts were generic enough to be the story of avatar.
lol, avatar is far more bland and generic. You know exactly what its messages are. The only way you know partially what will happen in this movie is if you've read the book, so it was rather in-depth for the majority of people. And I've never read the books. Don't be afraid of stating the facts, these two Dune movies are THE BEST sci-fi movie of all time. I would gladly sit on a theater and watch 6hrs of this stuff and will still be hungry for more
Heey! I was just about to smack you down and say Star wars is THE greatest (4-6) But then its actually fantasy. But Dune is absolutely up there. Without hesitation i gave it an 10/10 in imdb. As i did with BR2049, part one.
Its fighting against Matrix (pt1) and the holy grails itself.. Terminator 2 and predator.
Then again.. as he said, let the time pass.. and i think you are right my friend. Dune might be the best sci fi movie of all time. Cus i cant find a single thing in this movie i felt was off.. even Zendaya played her part amazingly.
Skarsgård, Brolin, chalamet and ferguson and the rest was spot on and a real joy to see in every scene.
10/10 imdb, 98 on rotten is what i would give.. the 2 percent was for the annoying cliffhanger ending.
@@Kutersing I remember the group I was watching with. Some were thinking they would've liked more explanations at different parts while others were pointing out that it was already crazy long without feeling excessive already.
It reminds me of the main complaint of spiderverse 2 where the only complaint some people had is that the movie ends.
Yeah I went out near the end to get a smoko in, cause I thought it was mid way, and when it finished I could have sat for another 3hrs as you mentioned...

14:30 I was about to comment this and you touched on it: Dune, right now, is the equivalent to Lord of The Rings.
Lord of the Rings is not my cup of tea, I'm a more sci-fi guy than a middle earth guy and even though I can't marathon the 3 movies with the extended cut I do know it's a cinematic masterpiece and that's where Dune come's in right now.
In 20 years we'll see these movies being remembered as a milestone in Cinema and Denis Villenueve will probably be in mount Olympus with Spielberg, Lucas and Nolan.
Before your video I didn't realised he was the hand behind all these amazing movies, but now it makes complete sense!
as a HUGE Lord of the Rings fan, I agree with you. I heard another CZcams reviewer say that each genre has had its great untouchable crown jewel, but for him, sci fi didn't until now. LOTR is the untouchable crown jewel of fantasy. He said that to him, Infinity War and Endgame are the crown jewels of the comic book movie genre. The Godfather is the crown jewel of the crime drama genre. And for lack of a better competition, Star Wars has been that for sci fi all this time. But Dune was ALWAYS a better story than Star Wars (Star Wars was mostly a worse rip-off of the Dune story, anyway), and now that there are TRULY good Dune movies, Dune is the _obvious_ crown jewel of sci fi. I think I agree.
Lotr is orders of magnitude better then Dune. Unfortunately he dropped the ball massively with the storytelling. Huge chunks of lore that develop the universe of dune were missing and the character development was terrible.
I went to the theater twice to see this movie and I can confirm this movie is PERFECT
I have always loved Denis Villeneuve movies even before I knew they were his. I actually had no clue who he was as a director until Dune pt 1, but both Arrival and Bladrunner 2049 are my favorite movies. His movies are full of deep emotion, beautiful visuals, and I love his use of long shot and quiet moments

Ive never gone back to see a movie twice in theaters before this movie comes out. Biggest regret was not watching it in IMAX both times.

The original Blade Runner is an unbelievably gorgeous snore fest. 2049 is my favorite film of all time - I saw it in theaters three times.
Needless to say - I love Denis' work and am so happy that he's able to receive so much acclaim for accomplishing his lifelong dream of adapting Dune. It's an absolute masterpiece
I watched Dune part 1 a week ago with headphones, and just the sound design alone convinced me to see part 2 in Imax. It was seriously one of the best experiences I've ever had in a theater

As someone that have read the book, seen the old movie and the Tv series I have to say this movie is really great. Sure, there is things I miss from the book but the movie is stunning. Glad that I watched it in IMAX. The cast does a great job. The world looks lived in. The previous adaptations looks and feels like they just put in weird props. Not this one. Here thinks look real and make sense.
As a sequel, its right up there with Empire and Two Towers

Tenet is another masterpiece. It demands to watch it more than once to actually enjoy it and understand it, artistically and story wise.
Dune Part II is the Empire strikes back of the XXI century.
This movie will be remembered for decades. Just incredible…

@@kevineckelkampthat's how I saw it the first time. Getting the best of both worlds. Really though, the IMAX should be the best version simply because the shots aren't cropped to death and you get to see more.

@@thatoneplanet there is a comparison on YT showing the difference in IMAX in Dune. What matters is that IMAX doesn't crop out 20% of the shot you see much more.
I like how the Sun goes down immediately. Day becomes night, night becomes day. It happens quite a few times throughout the movie, I'm sitting there thinking "man, things are kind of dark?" Then bam, the Sun comes out and the theater lights up. It's good stuff. Every shot is just gorgeous. Like, every single one. The story just keeps rolling, something is always happening and moving us forward. It's methodical and slow, yet I almost feel it rushes things..... Only bad thing is Christopher Walken as the Emperor Shaddan. Nah. That's Christopher Walken, haha.

This movie was AMAZING!!! I saw it opening weekend in IMAX and I’m going again today (IMAX OF COURSE)! I could not stop thinking about how great it was on every level. Hans Zimmer with another epic score 🤯😊
I can't remember the last time a film hit me like this one did, I had tears rolling down my cheeks regularly for the last entire hour.
Are you a real person? There wasn't a single emotional moment in this film.
It's fine if you didn't have the same reaction but people respond differently the same content. For me, my storytelling emotional kryptonite is unavoidable fate, inevitable tragedy and slowly losing who you were or seeing someone you love change so much you've lost who you loved - so basically the whole second half. I also actively decided at the start of the film I was going to allow myself to fully emotionally engage with the film and so that's why I may have reacted more strongly. I hoped you enjoyed it anyway.

This movie was absolutely fantastic. I thinks it’s the best cinematic experience I’ve had since Return of the king. It was absolutely brilliant in IMAX 70mm, I felt like I was in the movie.

If you do plan on reading the books, I would HIGHLY recommend taking notes. I know that sounds stupid, and it’s what a lot teacher would tell you to do for homework. But I can personally say I took so much more out of Dune when I actually started to write down and notice the themes being brought up so I could come back to them later in the book. Herbert has a way of writing where he’ll thread so many themes through his books that you’ll usually go 50-60 pages before he delves back into a theme he touched on earlier
Unequivocally the best movie experience of my life. The last time I was this excited to see something in the theater was either The Matrix or LOTR trilogies. When those came out, I saw each of them in the theater at least 2 or 3 times in the first month. But none of them even hold a candle to this one. Never walked out of a theater feeling so completely satisfied with what I just saw. Eager as hell for Part 3, but Part 2 was a feast... whereas Part 1 was just a little taste that left me dying for more.
This was also the first time I ever went to the theater alone. Couldn't stand waiting for schedules to align with someone so I just went. Walked out of the theater in total disbelief, and when I got home I just sat in silence, letting it wash over me for a while.
Now, part of me wants to go back and watch it every week until the next one comes out... and the other part wants to do the opposite. Let it fade from memory as much as possible so I can almost see it for the first time again. I won't have enough restraint for the latter, but I won't let myself do the former and get sick of it either.

It is weird to say that a film today holds its weight against the all time greats of cinema. But, when I think about how invested I was in every frame of the movie, and how it stuck with me long after I left the theater, I cannot shy away from this notion. Great video.
Great review, couldn’t agree more! I saw the first a few times & liked it very much so anxiously anticipated part 2. I’m not a person who frankly enjoys community theater settings but had such a great time seeing part 2 I ended up going twice & would have gone again if it hadn’t left theaters so quickly!! I started reading the first book after watching part 2 and can honestly say I don’t mind the changes. The book ends up being much richer, like LOTR and I gulped it down like a cold drink on a hot day. I am crossing my fingers we get part three sometime sooner rather than later. 🙏

I think this Dune trilogy might actually stand with the greats because, as one other commenter said, the Dune books laid foundations for sci-fi in general. I'd like to add that Dune was thought to be unadaptable, mainly because of the two (three if you count Jodorowsky) passionate but ultimately lackluster attempts, and that this recent triumph is because Villeneuve and Zimmer understand scale and awe and even terror.

Mr Villeneuve is an artist, and it shows in every frame of his films.
I just saw it at the BFI IMAX. As someone who has read all 6 books, I was envious of those who hadn't. But even knowing the story, seeing how well this was done at times brought a tear to the eye. Like the first film, I am sure that the experience will improve with multiple viewings.
Dune and Dune 2 make me wish there was an IMAX theater in my city, it'd have been even more insane!

I actually didn't think the IMAX experience was terribly different to the regular one. A bit more sky, some finer detailing maybe. I'll be seeing Dune again but I probably won't bother going all the way to an IMAX for it.
I am not going to see this movie once....I'll be going twice. ;-)
The rise of the Kwisatz Haderach (the speech in the cave) is one of the most chilling scene I ever seen put on screen.

Tbh there were 3 other scenes that gave me chills as well. Feyd’s Harkonnen Bday party(my fav scene), Paul riding the sandworm and Paul trans mutating the sandworm poison. I do wish Denis had kept the Juice of Sapho scene from David Lynch’s Dune but what can you do 🤷♂️ lol

The movie is not a sequel. It's the second half of the story.
There will be a third movie and maybe a fourth one . Villeneuve wanted to split Dune into more than 2 movies

Blade Runner 2049 is a better film, unquestionably, but that doesn't mean the original Blade Runner isnt also great. I think 2049 is objectively better in all aspects but part of that is due to technology.

I’m in the same boat I have never read the books or watched the original movie, have no idea about the lore of the Dune universe. Went and seen the first one because the poster looked cool and I loved it. Part two is pure human creativity at its peak, the absolute gold standard of cinema. I can’t wait to re watch them both back to back.
Seeing comments from people who likely haven't read the books and still getting the same joy out of the universe is a testament to the the care and the love Denis shows to the source material. If this was a hacky attempt at adapting the Dune franchise it would not grab the attention of those who haven't delved into F. Herbert's novels.

Dune has pretty much a woke agenda. The difference here is it's a good movie. I mean, Dune is like the ecologist hippie bible.

I’ve watched it three times and going again…, it’s a superb film, absolutely nothing to criticise. Paul has grown into his role and it’s quite majestic. I love this film. ❤❤
This movie is so good. To build on what you said about it being a slow burn and it being a good thing, I think it's progression acts so much like a book. And like a book you have do a lot of interpretation without all the dialogue
I can only hope this starts a new era for sci-fi movies. If we had a movie like this, qualitywise, every few years It would be so great for everyone

I celebrated my son’s birthday by bringing him and his besties to watch DUNE2 in theatre. A whole crew of us immersed in the fascinating world for a good 3 hours. For 3 sec meme or 3 min video fed GenZ, a 3 hr movie is an astronomical stretch of attention that only the greatest storyteller can command.
