  • I have few more of these kind of scrap that were from the end of the slab when I cut 400 blanks for brandy cups.
    I thought of making this video to show how still you can use this kind of wood without using epoxy or similar.
    Hope you'll get something out of it.

    What you need to get is a rainbow sock for the beeswax. You certainly can tell that you learned from the best. But thank you for your videos. You explain things very well. Between you and Richard Raffan I learned a ton.

    So cool. I feel like the margins in crafts, particularly crafts like turning that can require significant capital outlay upfront and require you to compete against hobbyists, must be super thin. So getting the most out of your wood and wasting as little as possible is critical. I love that you do it without constantly resorting to epoxy resin or other fillers - just cut out the bad stuff and see what can be done creatively with what's left!

    Nice job! Plates that size sell well in my area since there is little material cost. Bill Jones was a third generation ivory turner. He used to say he had no waste, just decreasing sized inventory. Again, you create nice flowing designs. I really enjoy watching you work.

    Those are a very nice looking pair of dishes; beautiful grain and finish. That's one of the really neat things about this craft, the ability to use what would otherwise be scrap and make something not only useful, but quite nice looking as well. Appreciate seeing how you processed those raw pieces to get the blanks you used.

    • @tomislavtomasicwoodturning
      @tomislavtomasicwoodturning  Před 5 měsíci

      Its cheaper tool,and on outside of bowls where you can have tool rest close to wood there is not much force on the gouge, so you can save a lot of good premium bowl gouge steel on using spindle gouge on outside. On inside its better to use bowl gouge as there is a lot more overhang over tool rest.

      Sometimes some batch of wood doesn't like to be scraped, then I would cut it or try spear point scraper.... But for example pine,I would always go for cut insted of scrape.

    You tend to scrape near the rim quite a bit below centre, any reason for that? Does it allow better definition at the foot intersection to be crisper or just where the tool rest was after the gouge.

    • @tomislavtomasicwoodturning
      @tomislavtomasicwoodturning  Před 5 měsíci +1

      The last one,tool was lower ,and om sides you can get away with it, but usually I tent to scrape at center high with tool pitched down

  • @darrentimlin9155

    What makes that shear scraping and not just scraping ? I don’t understand

    • @boooshes
      @boooshes Před 5 měsíci +2

      A shear cut is typically where the cutting edge (no matter how small) is almost parallel to the surface of the wood, only just enough angle to produce a cut, which is usually a shaving. Scraping can be accomplished with the cutting edge at almost any angle relative to the wood and can produce everything from dust to wispy shavings. The scraper cutting edge may be a simple angle or a raised burr, which behave very differently - often, a turner will present a burred scraper at a compound angle (where the burr is riding on its bevel and then the tool is rotated by twisting the handle) to get a finer cut because only a tiny edge is touching the wood surface. The term "shear scraping" is often used interchangeably with " scraping" but they can be very different. For instance, you could lay a skew flat on the tool rest and present it at 90 degrees to the wood surface and do a scraping operation. This would definitely NOT be shear scraping. But present a scraper with a raised burr at the proper compound angle to create minute, wispy shavings and you'd be amiss not to call that shear scraping. But there's a bunch of stuff in between too and variously shaped tools and sharpening techniques that get a host of nomenclature.

    • @tomislavtomasicwoodturning
      @tomislavtomasicwoodturning  Před 5 měsíci

      Tool is called shear scraper, but in this video I used it flat on tool rest, and then its just scraping.
      If I tilt it up on the side at more of shear angle then its shear scraper. I have several videos on this and I'll do more😀
