Love the grain in that wood it’s definitely the first I’ve seen of that colour.

Osage orange is a fascinating wood with a fascinating history in the USA. It was saved from extinction through a series of events that included it's protection by the Osage nation of indigenous people who traded the wood which is the finest bow wood in the eastern 2/3 of the nation. I donate objects I've turned to a gift shop on an historic site where I volunteer. I use wood from the property, and we have a lot of Osage orange. It sells quickly, probably for the novelty. But as you have probably noticed, it feels like porcelain when finished, and sounds like it too. I make lidded boxes that are almost like china. Yesterday I made a handle for a new Robert Sorby skew identical to the one you used in the video before this one, it makes a heavy and strong handle that can be exceptionally smooth, if you like that in a handle--there are drawbacks. The wood has a striking chatoyance. The yellow will darken in time to brown. It is exceptionally dense and heavy, burns hottest of any of our woods, is extremely rot resistent and has other extraordinary qualities. There's much more that can be said about it, it's a very unusual tree and wood. Oh--and I run my dust collector. my Powermatic air filter, a window exhaust fan right above my lathe, and wear a mask whenever I turn it.

That is fascinating, its begin to grow on my but we don't have it here in Croatia....this was odd tree on medical Campus and I manage to get few logs from a frend near it.... And I did burn ofcuts and a little bit goes a long way...it really burns hot and long.😉 Thank you for watching and support what I do

I grew up calling this species of wood “hedge” and it is commonly used as corner posts for fences. When it’s dry it is often too hard to drive a nail or fence staple into without bending. A good hedge post will last for generations here in Indiana. Loggers often say that when they are cutting Osage Orange trees sparks fly off the chainsaw teeth! I love to turn it. It takes a fine finish.

I've yet to turn Osage Orange. It always looks nice but I didn't realize how dusty it was. I really like the detail you included in that plate, Tomislav! Lots to look at and the chatoyancy really deepens the look.

Beautiful plate! My daughter-in-laws dad gave me a lot of Osage Orange and I agree, it makes a dusty mess in the shop. I turned only 2 bowls out of it, and though they are very unique with the wood grain, I don’t think I’ll be turning any more. I was told that wood burns long and hot in the wood stove and winters coming, lol!

I love turning the stuff! Locally, in central Texas, the trees are called "Horse Apple" trees and less commonly "Bois d'Arc". I never heard the term "Osage Orange" before I started turning. The last osage orange I turned became a little family of mushrooms. 😉
    Nice job, as usual!

Bois D’arc is French for “Wood of the bow” supporting a previous posters statement of its use by Native Americans. Where I used to live people called it “bodock” or even Burdock, which is a completely different plant.

Osage orange also is fantastic musical instrument wood-as hard and resonant as Brazilian rosewood or African Blackwood. It’s mostly been passed over because of the non- traditional color when first worked.

Nice looking plate. Osage orange (most likely different species) grows wild in my area. It rarely gets big enough to make this size of plate. Mine is very dense and very hard. It polishes well and holds hand cut screw threads well. Another difference is a color shift. Mine goes from the color of your plate to a deep orange highlighted brown. It is used mostly for fence posts where I live because it is so dense that termites and ants won't invade it! I'm going off topic here. I just want to compliment you on your plate. It's quite attractive!

Soon I will save more on timbers like these, but in this case it will be a really small saved piece..... And on thin stock like this you always risk to get to deep and then you dont have anything left😅...dont ask how I know😂
