- In this video, I turn an irregular shaped thin rimmed end grain bowl from a left-over end slice of a Black Walnut log destined for the fire pit. I finish it with Mahoney’s Walnut Oil, then hand rub with ACK’S Abrasive Sanding Paste And Ack’s Polish/Restoring Paste Wax to a soft luster a few days after the oil dried. I hope you enjoy the video as much as I enjoyed making it.
Have a nice day. 😊

Gorgeous! amazing how you can see such beauty in a block of wood.
Thank you so much, Barb. 😊the wood plays a big part in that. 😊😉I am glad you think so.

Thank you, Bryan. 😊😊
Man I love watching the grain pop with that Mahoney oil. Another fantastic video must be nice to have a big stock of walnut in the backyard.
Hi Brian. Thanks for watching. I just started using the walnut oil and I love it. Yes. The walnut is nice. 😍🔥
Cool looking pierce of Black Walnut Rob. As soon as I find some energy i have some Black Wlanut Logs I need to cut down into blanks.

Stunning mate I need to get hold of some Black Walnut lol
Thank you, Colin. 😊 wish I could share the wood, but at least I can make a video. 😊😊
Hi Rob, Stunning bowl. I love the recessed rim you put on it.
This has to be one of my favourite pieces I have seen you turn.
What was the scraper you used at 7.28?
Did you make it yourself?
Very enjoyable video Rob.
Take care my friend.
Cheers, Huw
Thank you, Huw. 😊 i am glad you like it it is one of my favorites too. I made the scraper from a skew. It is a half round scraper for the inside of the bowl, a sheer scraper for the outside and a tool for forming tenons. I appreciate your support. Take care my friend. Cheers, Rob.
The outside was done great, and you did a good job treating it like the “spindle” orientation of an end grain bowl. The inside you kept treating it like it is a normal (side grain) bowl orientation. From minute 16 on you were cutting the end grain (working up hill) when you would have had a much easier time if you started at the center and worked outward, cutting the side grain (down hill).
This is a common mistake made by people that learn turning on traditional side grain bowls. Switching to the end grain (spindle) orientation is a difficult conversion. But think of it like you are turning a spindle “box” and start from the center out. It will cut easier.
It is your turning, so you get to do what you want with it, but I liked it better when it still had the bark on one side.
Very nice use of a piece of wood that would otherwise be destined for the fireplace.
How thick did you leave the bottom? I tend to leave this type of bowl with a thicker bottom because they feel weaker than side grain bowls.
Hi Dennis. Thank you for watching and also for taking the time to comment. Thank you for the compliment and critique. The bottom is .25” thick. 😊😊
It is definitely capturing to spin something rough and give it a round shape. However...What I do not understand is the obsession with these objects, mostly busty for the purpose, esthetically busy, nonfunctional, made of the worst possible material in the world?!?!
Thank you for watching. I just love turning wood round. Thought this would show the grain best. I do appreciate your thoughts, though. 😊😊
Do you mean captivating? What I don’t understand is your use of capturing.
