    Hi Simon, 👋
I respectfully disagree with your perspective. Judaism and Zionism are distinct; one is a faith, while the other is a political ideology. Criticism of Zionism shouldn't be conflated with criticism of Judaism and its people. Not all Zionists are Jewish; there are Christian Zionists and supporters from various backgrounds. Therefore, opposing Zionism is not the same as being anti-Semitic; it's a rejection of a political ideology, not an attack on Judaism or Jewish people. Recognizing this distinction is crucial for fostering understanding and avoiding misrepresentation.
As a black man, I see a parallel here. Being critical of the Black Lives Matter (BLM) movement doesn't automatically mean being anti-black. Similarly, opposing Zionism doesn't equate to being anti-Jewish. Both cases involve distinguishing between a political ideology or movement and the people associated with it. It's important to acknowledge that individuals can hold differing views on political movements without those views reflecting their attitudes towards entire racial or ethnic groups.
Lastly, despite comprising less than 0.2 percent of the world’s population, Jews often hold prominent positions in various industries and sectors of society, leading to the saying "Jews rule the world." While this statement can be twisted into antisemitic rhetoric, it’s important to approach it with nuance and understanding, but approach it nonetheless.
    Have a nice day!

"The origins of the Jewish people are a complex and contested topic. There is no one definitive answer to the question of where the Jews were before Egypt.
Some people believe that the Jews originated in Canaan, the land that is now known as Israel and Palestine. This belief is based on the Hebrew Bible, which tells the story of the Israelites, a group of people who believed in one God, Yahweh. According to the Bible, the Israelites journeyed to Egypt from Canaan during a famine, and they were enslaved there for many years. Eventually, they were led out of Egypt by Moses and returned to Canaan.
Others believe that the Jews originated in Mesopotamia, an area that is now part of Iraq, Syria, and Turkey. This belief is based on archaeological evidence, which suggests that there were people living in Mesopotamia who spoke a language similar to Hebrew and who practiced similar religious rituals to the Israelites.
It is also possible that the Jews originated in other parts of the Middle East, or that they were a mixture of people from different regions. The truth is that we may never know for sure where the Jews came from."

The Invention of the Jewish People: Shlomo Sand. Professor of History at Tel Aviv University.
The thesis of the book is that Judaism is a religion and that Jews are not a people in an ethnic, national or biological sense. Sand argues that the modern myth began with
Heinrich Graetz’s History of the Jews (1853-1876) and has been promoted by Zionist thinkers, especially after 1929. The 1948 Declaration of the Establishment of the
State of Israel states that ‘After being forcibly exiled from their land, the people kept faith with it throughout their Dispersion and never ceased to pray and hope for their
return to it and for the restoration in it of their political freedom’. Sand argues that this is fiction.
The Invention of the Land of Israel: From Holy Land to Homeland: Shlomo Sand.
The Invention of the Jewish People, Shlomo Sand examines the mysterious sacred land that has become the site of the longest-running national struggle of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. The Invention of the Land of Israel deconstructs the age-old legends surrounding the Holy Land and the prejudices that continue to suffocate it. The invention of the modern concept of the 'Land of Israel' in the nineteenth century, he argues, not only facilitated the colonization of the Middle East and the establishment of the State of Israel, it is also what is threatening Israel's existence today.

Kier Starmer has undergone an Orthodox Conversion to join his jewish wife and their two children. (try to find a definitive answer to whether that's two boys or one boy and one girl)
The issue in the UK (as senior police officers and lawyers know) is the English language. In the legal codex the use of a capital letter in a sentence of a group of people means ALL of them.
Because most spell checkers CAPITALISE the J in jew or jews the law can place that as 'racism' as it is indiscriminate and thereby unlawful.
However if you write/type with a lowercase j then there is nothing unlawful in saying whatever you feel you have to say.
CZcams doesn't see it that way though and simply treats all the j's in jew, jews, jewish as triggers.
If you use a smartphone it's spellchecker can, and has, cause a commentator time spent in jail here in the UK.
It takes 500 instances of preferring the small j on an Iphone to stop it automatically trying to make you culpable of racism and for it to stop automatically capitalising that J.
That's how our law in the UK has been since 2008. Like it or not.
I've typed quite a few jews already that will doubtless get this factual post some attention from CZcams.

I have been saying decades that the distinction between jews and zionists, and judaism the religion vs jews the genetic people group, are utterly key distinctions in the discussion, and seemed to be constantly confused and suppressed by people who want all opposition to zionism to be falsely seen as bigotry against a genetic people group, or even a religion, when in reality it's simple disagreement with an ideology. Thank you for discussing this topic! I will say that the way you frame the topic, there really needs to be two categories of zionist. Because there is a meaningful distinction to be made. Support for the simple notion doesn't entail support for the trappings (lies, deeds, propaganda, fallacies, double standards, etc) of the zionist movement. Additionally, notional agreement doesn't entail that you oppose the same notion applying to every other people group, but the specific political movement of zionism does. Fallaciously equivocating the basic notion with the movement and all it's specifics is not really clearing up the muddied waters, it's muddying them further. Also, to say that all religious jews are supporters of zionism is just wrong as well, there are jewish sects that teach that they currently do not have dominion over the land for failing at their side of the covenant. There are millions of jews world wide who oppose the zionist movement, but practice judaism the religion. This is a surprisingly hyper-reductionist and simplistic take on a very nuanced and subtle topic. Not what I've come to expect from you.

We can assume that the man in the marriage will be the one making the decisions about the religion of the children in mixed religious relationships. Hence, a jewish man with a non-jewish woman can choose to raise their children in his religion. A Jewish woman with a non-Jewish man may not have much say in which religion the children are raised, which is why they created this rule that the mother being Jewish automatically makes the children Jewish. I see no other reason why they would invoke matrilineage in this case, considering Jewish culture is patrilineal in all other ways, including the lineage of patriarchs their religion is centred around.

If a Jew is simply someone born to a Jewish mother or a convert; and they have the right to live in Israel because of that - does that make Israel an ethnostate? A theocracy? I'm genuinely unclear on this point.

    • @politicas3361
      @politicas3361 Před měsícem +1

It's a great question but the answer depends on your theological stance.
If you believe in G-d then Jewish law defines it as you state but for a spiritual reason. Jews are those that descend from those that heard the word of G-d at Mount Sinai and those who are accepted into the faith which is no mean feat. An ethno state is a material idea born from the Treaty of Westphalia and irrelevant to Jews. A neat way to think of this is "jewish women propagate the seed while Jewish men propagate the word"
If you do not believe in G-d then Israel is a nation state but not an ethno state as Jews are neither an ethnicity nor a race - they are a family of ethnicities - technically they are a civilisation. There are only 3 civilisations still standing over 3,000 years - the Jews, Indians and Chinese. All other civilisations have collapsed or have been mutated into something other than where they began.
So Israel is neither an ethnostate nor a theocracy but a nation defined by G-d and enjoined by those that belong to it's family. One of the most common Jewish expressions "Am Israel Chai" translated to "The Jewish people live" is a statement to this endurance over 3,000 years of the worlds greatest civilisations that have tried to eradicate the Jews with no success
      Hope that helps

Almost all nations states are multi ethnic for obvious reasons but Israel is unique as it defines it's nation on something that transcends ethnicity. It simultaneously has created one of the strongest nation states - strict borders, mandatory national service and a common purpose that supercedes ideology , faith and race.
After Oct 7 there was two remarkable things that happened.
      1. The entire nation came together and put on their uniform in record time.
      2. Thousands pf Jews from California to Calcutta to the Kamchatka started streaming towards Israel in order to defend her

Jews of course being a subset of the Israelites. Case in point of course are Rahab's and later Ruth's descendants. They were excluded from the Taberbacle (later the Temple) assemblies for several generations because they had non-Israelite ancestors, but per the Mosaic law it did not matter which parent was not an Israelite... it mattered that they were from a mixed marriage. Ezra had the men put away their non-Jewish wives and chidlren because the wives were still worshipping pagan dieties and the male children were not being circumcised (per the ancient commentaries).
