A piccolo snare? No, a banjo tom! Another father-daughter project from the basement studio!
THE EXPERIMENT - "Banjo Madness" is a working title for a musical project conceived and performed by Sina and her father Mike. Like some other experiments and song ideas it may turn into, or inspire, a full-fledged song at some point. There are indications to that end and we will all be waiting!
"Banjo Madness" starts off with trade-offs between Sina playing drums with a modified "banjo tom-tom" and Mike playing a normal five-string banjo. Mike ends his playing participation with an unusual "tapping" lick which Sina answers. After that, Sina plays a free-form drum solo incorporating both the high-pitched banjo head and the strings.
This is not the first project, experimental or conventional, that Sina and Mike have done and some links will follow. It's always interesting to watch a father-daughter project. This is made even more special with Father's Day being celebrated (in most countries) on Sunday, June 16. Mike plays many roles in Sina's videos. He's occasionally seen and frequently heard but, even when not, he's always there since he's responsible for the production aspects including the video and audio recording and mixing. It's his knowledge and experience that keep the quality of Sina's videos at such a high standard. We thought it was time to feature something about this remarkable man.
According to a translated blog post (Google Translate - please blame them for any inaccuracies :D) in "Musikinstrumente für Kinder", Mike became interested in music as a young teen when he discovered the Beatles. He wrote, "I just had to have a guitar, it was an inner compulsion to play this instrument." After high school, he decided to become a professional musician. In Germany, that involved an apprenticeship training program. Mike wrote, "This relatively unknown profession is quite similar to that of the bookseller. In the course of the training you get a lot of information about all common instruments as well as about music history, composers and their works. On August 1, 2009, the tradesman's apprenticeship as a musician was modernized and renamed as a music dealer. In my time, the entire knowledge of musical instruments, music history and classical composers was asked in the context of a (bizarre) two-week examination course. At that time I knew all the arias from all the famous operas of all the important composers by heart. As you might have guessed, my own interests lay somewhere else."
Somewhere else eventually led to a Beatles tribute band. Johnny Silver, a world class John Lennon impersonator, had founded 'The Silver Beatles'. Mike joined them, as the "George Harrison" player, in May 1999, the same month Sina was born. He was with them for about 10 years. Through the band Mike met musicians whose names are familiar to regular viewers of this channel - Ian Watts, Steve Farmer, Rick Benbow, and Steve Heappey, among others. In 2005 Sony Music asked the Silver Beatles to produce a CD of Beatles covers for the German market and 10,000 copies were sold.
Tiring of frequent touring Mike returned home and set up the basement recording studio that we have all come to know so well.
Rosanna had the chance to chat with both Mike and Sina -
RO: We've seen, or heard, you play guitar, bass, mandolin, banjo, and some keyboards. Are there any other instruments that you play?
MIKE: Generally speaking, I can handle most things with strings attached. I don't actually 'play' those instruments but I can get some notes out of them. When I was asked to play a sitar for our first Beatles Tribute tour many years ago, I took the thing, tuned all strings to an open E chord and I found the notes I needed for "Norwegian Wood". Of course that doesn't make me a sitar player. But that's pretty much what I do with all stringed instruments that I can get my hands on.
RO: Which instrument is your favorite to play?
MIKE: My favourite instrument is the guitar. Acoustic or Electric, it doesn't matter.
RO: Did you ever try playing drums?
MIKE: I actually did. I bought a cheap drum kit for my studio, just to be able to get some real acoustic drum sounds out of it. Sina was 9 then. I tried to learn some basic grooves. Being a Toto fan, I tried to learn "Rosanna" but around that time Sina started drum lessons and after some weeks she did better than me, so I quit and I never touched the drums again.
RO: Did you study any instruments formally?
MIKE: Not really. I had piano lessons but not classical training. My teacher was a Jazz guy, an excellent piano player, he taught me some concepts, how to play the piano in a Pop and Rock context. I also had some Classical Guitar lessons but that was not for me.
RO: Tapping on the banjo isn't as common as it is on the guitar. What inspired that lick?
MIKE: That tapping lick was more like a joke. Before I joined my first Beatles Tribute Band I was a lot into Van Halen and Rock. The first thing our John guy told me was 'I never wanna see your right hand on the fretboard!' So my tapping history ended in 1999, the year Sina was born!
RO: Who had the idea to try drumming on a banjo head?
SINA: I wanted to hit on a banjo head since I first saw one, I think. But the risk was too high to break something. Since my dad bought a new banjo, a better one to do some recordings with, he said I could try to 'play' the old one.
RO: Did it take time to adapt to playing with a banjo tom?
SINA: I didn't have to be very careful, so it didn't take that long. It took some time to find good patterns to play and good sound combinations on the new drumset, though.
RO: It sounds great - like a timbale. We're you surprised?
SINA: I was surprised when I first heard the recording. I didn't notice it sounded that much like a timbale during the recording. I love how it turned out!
RO: It sounds like a structured drum solo. Was it?
SINA: It's improvised!

So, there's your weekend viewing all planned out! If you can, share it with your dad on Sunday! My sister and I are having lunch with ours. Just the three of us! Cheers guys!
It will be hard for you to top this comment in any future video ;) Thanks so much, Rosanna & Juliet!!
It was our pleasure - and long overdue recognition for what your dad does. Nobody can top what a father does for his kids so we won't try! ;-)
This is outstanding, even for you Juliet and Ro! Thanks!
Sina, I'm so glad you like it. I was worried that it was so long but I couldn't bring myself to cut it down any further. Keep doing what you do and make your dad proud!
Gosh. This is a special treat, Your comments always are. It's great hearing more about Mike. Huge respect for this incriedable man. The interviews a nice nice touch too. Your comments are appreciated so much. Thank you!!
Dueling Doerings! Paradiddles and Flamadiddles on a Banjo!! Mike playing the Banjo like Eddie VanHalen doing the string-tapping up on the neck! Sina doing a drum solo standing up!! Will wonders never cease?
Just when you think you have seen and heard your drumming ability and interpretation of different drum beats you take it to a level most drummers can't comprehend. You are a breath of fresh air and a joy to watch. I also see that you enjoy jamming with your dad. I'm sure he is one of your mentors. Don't ever stop playing music. Learn to take criticism and use it to be as good as you can for the sky is the limit
Sina, I have watched almost all your videos since you started and can tell you that you are heading to be the best ever.
I swear there isn't an instrument made on this earth that this talented young lady cannot make music come from! BRAVO SINA !!! Shout out from the USA !!!
As a father of a beautiful daughter myself, happy fathers day to Mike.
Your dad is brilliant and it’s nice to see more of you two together.
Thanks Sina I Really Enjoy Your Videos 💯 My brother played Drums in his Band in the 70’s I know he would have liked your videos too but he was Killed in 1985, I will forever miss him and his music, Rock on Sina, Nice 👍 Work, Your Fan Donnie from The USA ❤️
Be proud Sina - several thousand people across the planet have smiled today because you and your dad decided to have fun making music. Nice work!
I enjoyed that, a bit of fun mixed with your great drumming. Probably won't take me to the top of the popularity polls but it was the best use I have ever seen a banjo put to other than kindling.
Brings an entire new meaning to "dueling banjo's"
That's absolutely amazing! So fast and never miss a beat! I can't walk and chew at he same time!
Daughter and father creativity is catching me unawares. Give me some time to soak it all up.
somehow I'm a little speechless now ................................
i've never seen a banjo in a drum kit before, and the whole thing sounds also good too ....
well done, young mega-performer !!! 😎👍😉😍
I never get tired of watching this amazing young lady.
Thanks for sharing.
To anyone scrolling through these comments today, have a pleasant day & remember you are wonderful & worth it😊. Thanks for the excellent videos Sina.
Now this is a ton of fun! A bit of "Drumkit-Banjo Duel" (who needs a guitar?), a bit of a rare Sina drum solo, and too much craziness to keep seated. The creativity from Team Sina just leveled up!
I enjoyed this video probably more then any others. No, not for the banjo drumming, although that was pretty cool. But for the great chemistry you and your dad have. You're extremely lucky to have such a great father who also happens to be a brilliant musician!
Never - ever take that for granted!!!
Being from the South in the US, it sounds great! More of this and Country would sit well. Ya'll look like you were having fun! Your dad's a natural on the banjo.
Well this is certainly something I've never seen before! And, I liked it!!!!!
Original.....don't believe I've ever heard anything like it. Bravo Sina!👏
Okay, that's what real musicians are! Wonderful idea and perfect played! I'm very much looking forward to number two.
Oh come on girl they're killing me, every time I think I've seen it all you come up with this, you have more talent in your little fingernail at your age then any adults out there he's been doing this their entire life. Your dedication to music is unsurpassed keep it up girl love watching you!!
I'm glad you both had fun! That was really fascinating, Mike, and I didn't know you could do all of that with a banjo, Sina. There's nothing silly about this, in fact I found it rather educational, clever and inventive :)
So cool.
Fathers Daughter project
Love the banjo Tom.
Sina you Rock
You're not afraid of anything. First a poor innocent guitar is beaten up, then a banjo forced into a predicament in a snare-drum stand and maltreated with sticks.
But I think it's funny. Better unusual ideas than none. The dialogue between snare drum and banjo drum was very inspiring. Keep it up.
you and you dad did super, what both you and your dad does for others is great and super. Always helping out and doing for others.
Sina+banjo kit = wow. Whatever possessed you to put this together can only be described as creative genius at it's finest. Much like Mozart your head of your time.
It’s so good to see the two of you interact together. It makes me warm to hear.
Here I go again... You never cease to amaze me Miss Sina! I have never seen a banjo be played with drumsticks. You have a genius level of creativity and I so appreciate you sharing all the off the wall ideas you come up with! Much love and respect from across the pond.
More fun with a banjo.
Speaking of which, the definition of perfect pitch: When you throw your banjo in a dumpster and it lands perfectly atop the accordion and the bagpipes you threw in earlier. 😁
Just awesome I've been following you since you 23,000 people you keep going girl you're steamrolling it keep on playing you have unlimited Talent
Wow! That was Crazy Good! Mike, you can definitely strum a Banjo and Sina, well let's just say that you Sina-tized that Banjo! Your Sina-ish rendition of bluegrass pop rock country really reminds me of back home in southern Louisiana. ( les le bon temps roule' ) Thank you Mike and Sina for this offering, It was Amazing! I can't wait till September to see the full rendition of what will become to be known as a " Classic Sina Original"
;-)
That's very imaginative and very well played. Bravo!
Sina, I live in the south and I have never seen a banjo kit or ever heard anybody play one. Yea this is something new alright and I like where this is going. Your dad is a natural on the real banjo and you are amazing on the kit banjo! Looking forward to September to hear the Sina-ish Bluegrass Pop Rock Country original.
Brilliant Sina!!! And your Dad is an Amazing Player!!!! This was so coooool!!!
Glad to see that your exploring, I find standing at the drums very liberating.
Incredibly inventive and unique. Great job. Really enjoy your videos.
Never thought you would top the guitar bit but you got and with a banjo,,yes you are definitly a country gal!! Great work and sounded pretty good and your father was playing great! Great team work!
Another wild thing from our lovely Sina and her dad . Great sound😀❤️🎼🎵🥁
WOW! First it was electric guitar played with drumsticks in your One Girl Band video. Now, banjo as part of your drum set. What will be next? I for one can't wait to find out! You are amazingly creative.
That was pretty impressive! Can't wait for part 2!
Freaking awesome! I loved it.
Now folks it don't get more hillbilly than that.. Loved it. Awesome piece!
I have always stated that a banjo is just a snare drum with strings, this just proves my point.
A lot of fun. Interesting madness.
Oh wow! That is amazing!! I’m stunned!! 😱😱😍😍
Love your videos Sina, keep up the awesome work!!🤩🤩🤩
I was a bit worried about the little Banjo 😳 But everything turned out fine - sounds great. 👍🏻 Thank you so much 🙏🏻
You never know - I was thinking about the reason, why the song ends after 1:50 min ;-)))
Hi Sina!
That was so nice! I really loved what you did on cymbals at about 0:40 and Mike's riff right before it.
You're always experimenting something new that increases your music background and abilities and I think it's very positive.
That was so interesting, you always surprise us.
Hope that banjo don't break under your sticks hitting... In fact I noticed that your dad has his own instrument.
This is a masterful performance, Sina. This video, which looks silly on the surface, is the most professional-quality musicianship I've seen you do.
In 2007 I saw the Scorpions perform in Canada. During James Kottak's drum solo, bass player Paweł Mąciwoda held up his bass guitar and James played it as a tom, much the same way you do it here with a banjo.
That was awesome! I have to say ... I've never seen that done before. There is just no end to your talent Sina, you're awesome!
Love it. I tried a acoustic guitar few years back with chops stix, interesting sounds. Good luck sina.
It`s a nice and amusing work, well done Sina and Mike.
Drumming on a banjo, now I've seen everything 😎
Something tells me with her we have not seen nothing yet!
*This girl is better day by day*
🎖️🏅🥇🥁💪🏽🤘🏽
Oh, you know it!!
😂 Excellent ! How come I never thought of doing that ? I always drum on "stuf that is not supposed to be drummed on" !
If I use my guitar tuned in 'D open' I could slide one stick like a bottle neck...
Thank you Sina ! You gave me a funny idea ! A sun ray on a rainy day.
now THAT'S something you don't see everyday. lots of fun and what its all about. nicely done.
You've increased my appreciation for drumming as an art form so much through your work! I love beating out percussion on whatever objects or surfaces I can get my hands on, be it a filing cabinet or a water bottle, and I think one of these days it might be fun to get my hands on a drum kit (or a banjo, whichever) and start learning. If there's one thing I've learned watching your videos, though, it's clearly a lot harder than it sounds! Still, might be a fun challenge. Anyway, sorry for the ramble and thanks again for another amazing video!
Was für eine geniale Idee!!! Hört sich klasse an!!!
What I like about this is, the originality and the passion both Sina n Mike have are putting in to it, creativity and quirkiness are shown here and certainly gives you a foundation to build up on for more great music..... Not just the run of the mill stuff, x
I’ve always wondered what could be done with a homemade drum set........ pan lids and upturned buckets...... just something different ?
Very original and unique, you both are always good for a surprise. What is next? A piano included in your drumset ? But great as usual waiting for the next .
Hello Sina & Mike, just another Dad-Daughter 'musical muckaround' ! That was a great little inspirational romp on banjo & drums. Well done to the both of you. Best Wishes & Cheers from Ross, Oz Down Under.
This is amazing. I never heard of a banjo being used this way. And your rudiments are tight! ;-)
Happy Fathers Day Mike! That’s quite a daughter you’ve got there, although I’ve a feeling you already know that !!
Loved it! A great change-up from the weekly cover. Thank you!
Very creative, love it, never heard a banjo played like that b4, sounded great, thanks Sina & Sina's dad. Very good
You are a multitalented instrumental wizzard! so is Mike! Using a banjo as a stringed drum is briljant! I ❤ it!
Now that was fun! Thanks so much Sina, and thanks to you too of course Mike. I love the creativity of this project. How wonderful. Such great skills from you both!!
Your talent is out of this planet. Keep it up.
I play drums and banjo, so this was super cool to me...Thanks!
Sina. You amaze me with your drum solos!! Please, make half an hour drum solo in your next concert. I could watch it endlessly! Your abilities are excellent in all aspects. You even have to get up once in a while to get the effect you want !!I’ve known you’re genious, but I’m still always left in awe!!😍
Quelle technique ! Une fois encore, merci Sina.
I like the little "Don't try this at home" at the end.
Just when I thought I'd seen it all, I realized I hadn't "Sina" thing. You never cease to amaze! 🎶🎶❤🎶🎶
Bravo Sina, very original! I see you continue to help young musicians including this young banjo player! 😊
That was great! Good job, Sina and Mike!
great sina, as always, I would like in the future to see you play come with me from puff daddy, that drum I love and I know that many also, it would be great to see you doing it! Greetings from Argentina!
Very great drumming Sina, well done!! greetings from Chile!! :)
Wow, Sina du legst ein Tempo vor, da kann dein Papa am Banjo aber nimmer mit 😂😂😂 Super!!
Short, but very commanding.Father and daughter.Sia,You have a dad that is phenomenal.Mike, thank you and your wife for Sia.🥢🥂
Pretty cool idea and playing there Sina and nice seeing your Dad in a video again.
Oh this is genius! I'm in a small band that includes my brother on guitar and we tried something similar. He would come up with his guitar and I would play it with my sticks on the fret board to try and add some flare!
That was pretty cool to say the least,SINA and her father Mike is an awesome combination
Most excellent! Great job :)
I love your enthusiasm
What an interesting spin on the banjo. Well done Sina.
Might not be exactly Nashville, Tenn. Banjo playing style, that they are use to, but it sounds great in the Rockies...
I'll reserve my praise for the long version. :>) 🧡
I love hearing some original work by you, nice one!
Awesome video and playing Sina! Great video! You are so talented! 👍
Very interesting! You guys never cease to amaze me.
Great profile shot of sina
Nice to see you having fun with dad.!
Yiihaaa, saugeil....
Very cool, I have a 5 string banjo that I have never learned to play!! Maybe I need to try again! Lol Loved it Sina!!❤
Sina, your performance is the best and I've seen it well. I never imagined that I would play the drums like Banjo, but it made my body flutter. I think of traditional Korean music when I see the sound of playing the drums with Banjo. Banjo is Gayageum, one of the traditional Korean instruments, and drum is also like janggu, a Korean instrument. Gayageum is a stringed instrument and janggu is one of the percussion instruments. But this banjo and drum is the best sound to go beyond that!
I am just dumbfounded. That was an interesting and unique sound. You have a real talent there my friend. I just can't wait for your posts.
these folks must Not know ya.....every song you touch is pretty amazing ;)
Sina, you neverr cease to amase me.There were times them drums sounded like a banjo. You were into that when you have to stand up..So cool ..l.y.
Interesting concept, wonder what a song written with a banjo as percussion would sound like. Nice video, thanks for sharing.
This is so cool, Sina… I don't see any end to what you are capable of performing on the drums. Love this and you and your talents.
