- The Toyota Origin, just over 1,000 of these were built in 2000 & 2001 to commemorate 100,000,000 Toyotas built in Japan. Its design was strongly influenced by the first-generation Crown, the RS Toyopet Crown.

Wow, that's my favorite thing about Japanese cars, they make these awesome engines (2jz in this case) and stuff them into all sorts of cars. You've got the Pulsar Gti-r which came with an sr20det, you got the Nissan X-trail GT which came with an sr20vet, you've got the 1998-2004 Nissan Prairie that came with an sr20det, you've got this thing, the list goes on forever. By the way, have you ever seen an X-trail GT in Japan? they're a Japan only model but I want to get one to Australia one day.
Wow.. I just woke up from taking a nap, and I had a dream about being on a bus, where two cars were racing past me. A big one and a small one. I recognized the small one but I could not remember what car it was, when I woke up.
Then I just randomly went to CZcams and clicked at this video and boom. 2:06, there we have it. The Mazda Carol!
Sort of creepy but, still very awesome.. Haha, thanks man :)
That is spooky. (*Twilight Zone theme*) :)
Retro cars are much more interesting IMHO, e.g. VW Beetle, Nissan Pike cars like the Figaro, SCargo, BE-1 etc. I don't know why you struggled to describe the wraparound rear window on both cars. It was a very common feature on 1950s cars lots of US cars e.g. 57 &58 Cadillac and Buick Roadmaster, Studebakers from 1953 etc, then translated to European designs like Hillman Minx, Vauhhall Cresta, Opel Rekord etc.
Looks built directly off a GS platform. I sort of like it. Its like a VIP car already done up
XG platform? Just going from what Wikipedia says... I'm clueless.
that is an odd looking car but at the same time looks cool, lol, love the colour and the suicide doors, pretty pricey though!
question of the day, it's a yes from me, i love the old retro skylines :)
great video as always Dan :)
Of course, them old Skylines look cool. :)

I say yay to retro styled cars! I'd love to have a Nissan Figaro haha.
Ah, yes. ;-)
2
Yay, but only if it's done correctly!
An example of this is the Fiat 500, a good modern interpretation of the classic 500.
That car is just spot-on.
Yeah, I've got to agree. The new Fiat is a smart-looking car. :)
8
very nice design and classic modern for its era... nice video bro
Thanks. :)
I would go with yay.
I love daily driving my mk2 supra but sometimes I wish it had something different than the outdated 5m :/ something about seeing a old car on the freeway zooming past is just wonderful! I want the same feeling with my toyota. At the moment im just glad it's reliable :)
Good that you are hanging on to it as is. ;-)
Wazzup bro i gotta see the 2jz powered toyo in vip trip that will be sic keep up da good work peace
Thanks :)
Took a moment for me to see the similarity to the the Toyopet Crown, but now that I'm used to it I do really like it. :)
Cool. ;-)
Yes,I like that toyota origin.Oh I like to know how to get that magazine you were reading.I like to get sokrb
9
Nissn Figaro - Yeah!
Wow. Second vote for the Figaro. :)

I love Sigmas and I want to buy that magazine, please post the link. Great video by the way.
Here's a link to issue #9. I think there'll be about 100 issues in all. www.amazon.co.jp/gp/product/B00IML3KYC?ie=UTF8&camp=247&creativeASIN=B00IML3KYC&linkCode=xm2&tag=kyushudan-22

After BMW brought and copyrighted the design of the MINI Cooper and then made a car that didn't have any of MINI soul, I have to say nay. If Rover coupled with another company that didn't want much shares, I bet you they'd still be producing the MINI the same as before apart from some engine changes
That's £41.566 ,a hint of a Vauxhall PA Cresta in them . I think the yanks are putting out some nice one's .
Yes, I can see some similarities. ;-)
5
VERY NICE!!!!
:)
Hey Daniel, behind the black car in the very first picture is a Nissan Leopard F31. Have you ever gotten video or pictures of one of those? I remember asking you a LONG time ago if you ever saw F31s, and you said they were actually rather common. I own two Infiniti M30s here in the US, one a convertible, and it's been a few years since I've seen another at all. It would be great if you could cover a Leopard.
I recall you asking. And, yes. I see a bunch of them going around to all the larger car shows. They don't usually enter, usually stick to the car-parks. I'll try to get some pics next time.
Helo can you give me the link for famous. Cars of Japan I love collecting stuff
How's your Japanese? www.amazon.co.jp/gp/product/B00HCMSR7C?ie=UTF8&camp=247&creativeASIN=B00HCMSR7C&linkCode=xm2&tag=kyushudan-22

I´ve seen one Toyopet Crown (I think it is 1959 or 1960) here in Finland, it was light blue and LHD. The car still exists and is now under restoration as far as I know. Don´t know how many of them was imported here or the rest of the Europe, but not much I believe. The newer generation of Crowns were imported at least dozens, even hundreds in here.
Wow, great to hear that old one is under restoration. :)
there is a Toyota dealer in Alberta Canada that has some old Toyotas/and Toyoypets someone on Flickr had pictures of some of them just wish there was one for Mazda and Subaru and others too
You wish there were pictures of old Mazdas & Subarus?
WasabiCars what I meant is there is a dealer in Alberta someone posted pictures of older model cars
I wasthinking it would be neat if one ofthe Mazda or Subaru dealers had older cars too probably is one just have not seen it
but yes pictures too there was a history of Mazda webpage
Do you still have a link for the magazines, I would like to get some.
The back of that RS crown reminds me a lot of the Ford Anglia (105e)
This is a bit off topic but, do you know what that silver car located to the right of the Crown was?
That was a Toyota S800, and all you need do is go here to see more: czcams.com/users/results?search_query=wasabicars+toyota+s800&sm=3
WasabiCars I just realized what car is in your profile picture, interesting car, reminds me of Triumphs, MGs, Austin-Healys, etc.
I really wish the remake of the Lancia Statos HF would be produced, one of the few modern retro takes that's really solid. Polar opposite: the Chrysler PT Cruiser (or as it's often referred to here, "PT Loser").
PT Loser, Hahahaha!
Retro-style cars have been quite popular here in North America ever since Volkswagen came out with the New Beetle, Chrysler came along with the Prowler and the P/T Cruiser, and Ford redid the Mustang to look like something out of 1970...
The most prominent features of that '55 Toyopet Crown were quite in vogue at the time among American cars; The "Cathedral" tail lights remind me of mid 50s Packards and Plymouths, the reverse-slant C-pillars remind me of Nash, and to borrow from the French, the grille and nose remind me of 50s Peugeots. The Japanese have always been great at copying the designs of others, and in some instances even improving on them...
I have to agree, they are good at absorbing influences & coming up with something different. Actually, the 1st-gen Mazda Cosmo is another fine example.
when's the next vid? I can't wait!
Hmm... still not quite sure.
Really interessting Car, the Origin. never heard of this before
I like it
I think some of the Retro Cars are well made, i like the look of the old Cars with the modern interpretation =)
Like the Nissan Figaro or the Pao =)
The Pao, I dig. The Figaro, not so much. I do like that they did it though.
They looks better then the german Examples like the 2001 NewBeetle or the 2013 Beetle or the New Mini ...
I think a Mazda Cosmo with first gen styling cues would be interesting to see transformed into a modern sports car. even the second gen would be interesting!
Hmm.. I'd at least like to see what they can come up with.
Retro cars...hmm...they kinda were a big thing in the US. The retro Ford Thunderbird (2002) was okay. I guess the Chrysler PT Cruiser could be called retro as was the Chevy HHR. Chevy also did that retro pick up thing. I agree with citizh, the new Camaro looks nice on the outside, but if you sit in one, you can't see out of it. Oh, and I really do love the Fiat 500, especially the Abarth!
Gotta agree, the Fiat 500 is true to the original and pretty cool.
But i agree the front looks like cheech from cheech and chong to me ha
Hey Daniel, could you please send us the link to those magazines?
Will trade for vegemite in your other Suzuki video :P
Thanks
Done! Here's a link to the first issue. Links to other issues should be easily found on that page. (You may need Google Translate): www.amazon.co.jp/gp/product/B00HCMSR7C/ref=as_li_qf_sp_asin_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=247&creative=1211&creativeASIN=B00HCMSR7C&linkCode=as2&tag=kyushudan-22
When I saw a Toyota Origin on the street, it sure stood out from other cars, due to that "mixed old&new-look". Retro-style cars..when the VW New Beetle was introduced, I thought it was like a "dressed up Golf", due to it being totally different from the rear-engine original. Well, it's shape set it apart from other modern cars and that was a good thing, of course..
Yeah, I think the new Beetle is nice to see on the streets. It does break up the scenery.
Right after I posted that comment you mentioned the anglia haha should have watched the whole thing before posting
Lol
Hell yes retro style! I drive one. My Mustang. Lol. Very informative video. I love learning. :P
Thanks Dylan. Man, I'm still bummed out by my trip in to see that Black Mustang. :( Anyway, should I ever see one I'll be sure to chat to the owner/get pics, etc...
WasabiCars That would be much appreciated!
It depends. If they tried to revise the Ford/Lotus Cortina I'd be worried, as the newer car would have a big name to live up to. But things like Fiestas and such are produced so often it doesn't really matter. I must admit, the front of that Origin looks very squashed and weird.
Yeah, the front is odd. :(
I hit the button,I like to get some of those mags you read.oh it has been bad for me of late,I came down with shingles and all I do is fall a sleep and I was just to fall a sleep when I wrote the last comment sorry
Lol. I was wondering what "sokrb" was. :P Here's a link to the first issue. (How's your Japanese?) www.amazon.co.jp/gp/product/B00HCMSR7C?ie=UTF8&camp=247&creativeASIN=B00HCMSR7C&linkCode=xm2&tag=kyushudan-22

Hey, an F31 Leopard in the first Origin picture.
An interesting car, it's a shame though that Toyota did not offer a manual gearbox, then I might have one. The price (about $76,000AUD) is also a bit steep for what is essentially a relatively boring saloon made to look like an old Crown. I would be much happier with the TE47 Sprinter Trueno you showed a while ago.
As you can probably tell now, I see retro cars as a rather silly idea. I don't see the point of spending way too much money on a boring modern car often poorly made to look like an old car (see Chevrolet SSR or Plymouth Prowler) (sorry if you like these cars, I don't mean to offend you) when I could buy the original car for a fraction of the price (in some cases).
Hey, you don't have to like retro-styled cars. I can't say I'm much of a fan. Though, I guess I do find them interesting at some level.
1
I'm a fan of the remake.
;-)
Boksing
That is alot of money, when I test drove the Skyline GTR that year it was only 5.7 million yen. I like those retro looking cars though.
Two examples that I think turned out about as well as they could are the Dodge Challenger and Ford Mustang...but I think the one that turned out Awesome is the Ford GT.
Dang, I'd go the GT-R for sure. Oh, and the Ford GT. That is a winner. :)
i like the style of the nissan micra, not sure if it's retro or not, and also the fiat 500
;-)
i like retro... that's what my mustang is all about ^_^
Hehe, you & ***** might get along quite well. Oh, & MustangConnection1 too.
国内自動車生産累計1億台達成を記念したスペシャルモデル
Yea. The Challenger turned out to pretty good.
Yep, I'd agree. :)
You reply fast! I'm watching some of your vids now. I just found out about this channel today. Subbing.
***** Thanks man. Yeah, I do tend to reply to all comments. It's what I do. Apologies if it gets annoying.
LOL no it doesn't
I dont' know... if Lancia had produced the remake of the Fulvia, back in 2003 it would be a yay, but I don't like too much other cars such as Nissan Figaro-Pao, Fiat 500 or the new VW Beetle ("Maggiolino", here in Italy)
Wow. I just had a look at that Fulvia. Cool little car.
Pal, are you Australian living in Japan ?
😂 you got in one 👍
I love cars very much.
I can hear that what they sey.
they said please drive me! don't keep me at the musiam.
Hai Wasabi !!! I love cars too!!!
okay...
$7 million Yen is roughly $61,000 in 2016
first car very nice, yes very strange front on other one.retro car i like the nissan pao.
I do like the Pao myself. Great style.
WasabiCars got one on gran turismo 5 and it dose over 120 mph.but not many in uk and expensive..
The Crown kind of looks like a shrunk down Ford Thunderbird,LOL.
Retro cars based on previous generations, thats a hard one, some I love like the Skyline others I hate like the Mini.
Yeah, I do not get the Mini (even the old ones.)
I need you to find a 78 Corolla sr-5 liftback
That car and every other body style it came in has become all but extinct in Japan. I saw a coupe version for the first time just recently. Video to come for sure.
hey Daniel i know its not related to this video but do you remember the Nissan outback (ford falcon xf ute) ???? i haven't seen one for ages and this is the picture i could find so enjoy......
www.flickr.com/photos/hugo90/4522534460/
Wow. I got a wave of nostalgia seeing that ad. Thanks. :)
Retro styled cars? Yay and Nay!
Yay: Nissan Pao
Nay: Matsuoka cars
Totally agree! :D
Now that you mention the toyope-to colour, there is a pick up model of that car, and I saw one of them near my old house, and it is carmine red, it's a very rare car here, I just saw that one, it's in rough shape, but complete, you really need the parts, the metal doesn't matter, you can revive junk for a very low price in this country, about the origin, well it would be nice if the Toyota designers made the choice of putting the lettering as "toyopet" or "toyoda", that would be a very nice touch, but it looks nice in my opinion.
-question of the day: yay for Japan, you got the Figaro of the Pao, nay for America, new mustangs and Camaros look awful. and the plastic inside... yuck!
A Crown pick-up? Wow. I'd love to see one here in Japan. There seem to be a few old Crown station-wagons in the US also. Never see any here in Japan.
I definitely like the Crown better! :D It's just so nice! Sure the other one is expensive as sh*t but (for me) It's just not as sexy! :D
I love retro... They've always looked so much nicer then the cars we have nowadays! For *me* at least! X3
Cool, Manny. Hey, I'm always looking out for your artistic creations. How long 'til the next one? (Mind you, I get they they aren't so easy to pump out.)
WasabiCars I'm working on something new! But my stupid laptop is old and can't handle it too well... I'm mostly having tech issues! DX Trying to figure out how to do it...
Oh, and two questions for you. Do you prefer combustion engines or Wankels?
Have you seen a Datsun 240Z?
I just like old-ish cars. Traditional or rotary, whatever. Lol, I've seen a few 240Z's: czcams.com/users/results?search_query=Wasabicars+240z&sm=3
Retro cars I like... new Dodge Challenger and 05-up Mustang... Ones I dont like... PT Cruiser. It's hit or miss if they get it right or not.
Cool.
WasabiCars
Oh, one I left out was the Toyota FJ Cruiser. Far as I know, only in the States. Love those things.
I'm not a huge fan of retro styling. I get the point, trying to recall glory days. The problem is so many of them stumble, and never quite capture the original sense of style. Oh well- different strokes/different folks and all that.
I will say though that Toyota Origin is fascinating. I think part of that is Toyota had the good taste to not produce it in the tens of thousands. Are you aware there was a wagon version of the original Crown? Suicide doors and all.
The only wagon versions of the very early Crowns seem to be in the US. I'd love to see one locally.
Yah, one thing in the Japanese manufacturers favor was even at that stage, they were trying to understand the US market.
Net time I see a Crown wagon come up for sale, I'll post it to you. I think the last one I saw was on Bring A Trailer. There have been a couple.
***** Here's one: bringatrailer.com/2013/12/10/1962-toyopet-crown-wagon-project/
and another: barnfinds.com/pet-project-1960-toyopet-crown-rs30-wagon/
Both might still be searchable on eBay under completed listings for a few days yet.
thats nearly $70k aus and $69.5k usd.... bit steep for what that car is
I agree. O_o
Still better than the Impreza Casablanca
Hahahaha! Very good call. ;-)
Ford Mustang and Dodge challenger= Yay! Dodge dart and Ford Thunderbird=Hell nay! Lol
I wasn't familiar with the new Dart. It looks ok for a new car (I actually have no interest in new cars anyway.) Using the Dart name was not cool though.
That's exactly what I meant. I'm not inclined to newer cars either! But why put such an iconic muscle like the Dodge Dart in ridicule!? They did the same with the new Charger! Such a beautiful muscle car from the 70's, and made it a sedan?! At least they kept it hemi though! Would love to see a revival of the Barracuda like they did the Challenger! That'll be sweet! X^}
Cool retro toyota I've never seen before!! Retro cars is not for me, the Mustang redesign to go retro was not my thing, odd thunderbird for older people. I think retro is clearly aimed at older people who remember fondly the styling! So when I'm late 50's and they bring out a 80's retro style car I'd go crazy for it! but until then the styling doesn't really take with me!
Fair enough. :)
Some of the american remakes are really a hit or miss. There have been a bunch. Look at how many restyles the mustang has gone through. The new camaro's have blind spots everywhere. I don't know how anyone can drive them.
Lol. even with a Camaro convertible you might have to stand up in your seat to see what's near you.
69ooo $ for that car ? damnn
Yeah, but the generation of people it appeals to is pretty cashed up.
u think there still selling mr2 with 4a gts engine?
Marcel Sadijo Sorry. I don't follow newer cars. :(
ok its cool
100 million toyota built in japan.......did I hear that wrong
100 million cars produced in Japan. Yes. That is a lot.
it must have been equipped wiht a lot of extras , in € it's around 49.707€, you could get a nice Mercedes with that amount of money. Not saying the Toyota is not worth it, but it better be well equipped!
I guess another thing that it has going for it is its exclusivity. :/
Yeah, that too!
¥7 MILLION IS $60,000 USD!!!!!
Hey, Anthony. Sorry, I can't for the life of me recall what that price is in reference to. Could you remind me?
@@wasabicars the Toyota origin down here in America 60 grand will get you a nice Lexus LS. My father would never spend that kind of money for a Toyota. You know how it is. In America if your spending more than 40 grand you want a nice badge in the front.
It costs more than a V-Spec R34 GTR which was ¥5,598,000 ($53,335 adjusted for inflation). The Origin is based on a Toyota Progress which was a mid-size luxury car which falls in the same category as the Mercedes E-class. The most expensive Progress was ¥4,063,500 ($37,130 adjusted for inflation of the year 2004) Wonder how much money Toyota poured into designing the Origin?
"New" Nissan 510
Are you referring to the IDx? I like it a lot!
I do like that car. I personally don't get the 510 connection. Looks cool though.
The Toyota Origin cost $69060
:O
porsche yay, mustang yay, mini sort of yay. Everything else fuckin nae as bro
Toyota fj40 fj70 troops
;-)
Ugly but in a cool way, nice car
"Ugly but cool", sounds about right
