  • The Toyota Origin, just over 1,000 of these were built in 2000 & 2001 to commemorate 100,000,000 Toyotas built in Japan. Its design was strongly influenced by the first-generation Crown, the RS Toyopet Crown.

    Wow, that's my favorite thing about Japanese cars, they make these awesome engines (2jz in this case) and stuff them into all sorts of cars. You've got the Pulsar Gti-r which came with an sr20det, you got the Nissan X-trail GT which came with an sr20vet, you've got the 1998-2004 Nissan Prairie that came with an sr20det, you've got this thing, the list goes on forever. By the way, have you ever seen an X-trail GT in Japan? they're a Japan only model but I want to get one to Australia one day.

    Wow.. I just woke up from taking a nap, and I had a dream about being on a bus, where two cars were racing past me. A big one and a small one. I recognized the small one but I could not remember what car it was, when I woke up.
    Then I just randomly went to CZcams and clicked at this video and boom. 2:06, there we have it. The Mazda Carol!
    Sort of creepy but, still very awesome.. Haha, thanks man :)

    Retro cars are much more interesting IMHO, e.g. VW Beetle, Nissan Pike cars like the Figaro, SCargo, BE-1 etc. I don't know why you struggled to describe the wraparound rear window on both cars. It was a very common feature on 1950s cars lots of US cars e.g. 57 &58 Cadillac and Buick Roadmaster, Studebakers from 1953 etc, then translated to European designs like Hillman Minx, Vauhhall Cresta, Opel Rekord etc.

    Hey Daniel, behind the black car in the very first picture is a Nissan Leopard F31. Have you ever gotten video or pictures of one of those? I remember asking you a LONG time ago if you ever saw F31s, and you said they were actually rather common. I own two Infiniti M30s here in the US, one a convertible, and it's been a few years since I've seen another at all. It would be great if you could cover a Leopard.

    I´ve seen one Toyopet Crown (I think it is 1959 or 1960) here in Finland, it was light blue and LHD. The car still exists and is now under restoration as far as I know. Don´t know how many of them was imported here or the rest of the Europe, but not much I believe. The newer generation of Crowns were imported at least dozens, even hundreds in here.

  • @fehquig
    @fehquig Před 10 lety

    Retro-style cars have been quite popular here in North America ever since Volkswagen came out with the New Beetle, Chrysler came along with the Prowler and the P/T Cruiser, and Ford redid the Mustang to look like something out of 1970...
    The most prominent features of that '55 Toyopet Crown were quite in vogue at the time among American cars; The "Cathedral" tail lights remind me of mid 50s Packards and Plymouths, the reverse-slant C-pillars remind me of Nash, and to borrow from the French, the grille and nose remind me of 50s Peugeots. The Japanese have always been great at copying the designs of others, and in some instances even improving on them...

    Retro cars...hmm...they kinda were a big thing in the US. The retro Ford Thunderbird (2002) was okay. I guess the Chrysler PT Cruiser could be called retro as was the Chevy HHR. Chevy also did that retro pick up thing. I agree with citizh, the new Camaro looks nice on the outside, but if you sit in one, you can't see out of it. When I saw a Toyota Origin on the street, it sure stood out from other cars, due to that "mixed old&new-look". Retro-style cars..when the VW New Beetle was introduced, I thought it was like a "dressed up Golf", due to it being totally different from the rear-engine original. Well, it's shape set it apart from other modern cars and that was a good thing, of course..

    It depends. If they tried to revise the Ford/Lotus Cortina I'd be worried, as the newer car would have a big name to live up to. But things like Fiestas and such are produced so often it doesn't really matter. I must admit, the front of that Origin looks very squashed and weird.

    An interesting car, it's a shame though that Toyota did not offer a manual gearbox, then I might have one. The price (about $76,000AUD) is also a bit steep for what is essentially a relatively boring saloon made to look like an old Crown. I would be much happier with the TE47 Sprinter Trueno you showed a while ago.
    As you can probably tell now, I see retro cars as a rather silly idea. I don't see the point of spending way too much money on a boring modern car often poorly made to look like an old car (see Chevrolet SSR or Plymouth Prowler) (sorry if you like these cars, I don't mean to offend you) when I could buy the original car for a fraction of the price (in some cases).

    Now that you mention the toyope-to colour, there is a pick up model of that car, and I saw one of them near my old house, and it is carmine red, it's a very rare car here, I just saw that one, it's in rough shape, but complete, you really need the parts, the metal doesn't matter, you can revive junk for a very low price in this country, about the origin, well it would be nice if the Toyota designers made the choice of putting the lettering as "toyopet" or "toyoda", that would be a very nice touch, but it looks nice in my opinion.

    I'm not a huge fan of retro styling. I get the point, trying to recall glory days. The problem is so many of them stumble, and never quite capture the original sense of style. Oh well- different strokes/different folks and all that.
    I will say though that Toyota Origin is fascinating. I think part of that is Toyota had the good taste to not produce it in the tens of thousands. Are you aware there was a wagon version of the original Crown? Suicide doors and all.

      @wasabicars  Před 10 lety

      The only wagon versions of the very early Crowns seem to be in the US. I'd love to see one locally.

    • @Hotrodelectric
      @Hotrodelectric Před 10 lety

      Yah, one thing in the Japanese manufacturers favor was even at that stage, they were trying to understand the US market.
      Net time I see a Crown wagon come up for sale, I'll post it to you. I think the last one I saw was on Bring A Trailer. There have been a couple.

      and another: barnfinds.com/pet-project-1960-toyopet-crown-rs30-wagon/
      Both might still be searchable on eBay under completed listings for a few days yet.

      I wasn't familiar with the new Dart. It looks ok for a new car (I actually have no interest in new cars anyway.) Using the Dart name was not cool though.

      That's exactly what I meant. I'm not inclined to newer cars either! But why put such an iconic muscle like the Dodge Dart in ridicule!? They did the same with the new Charger! Such a beautiful muscle car from the 70's, and made it a sedan?! At least they kept it hemi though! Would love to see a revival of the Barracuda like they did the Challenger! That'll be sweet! X^}

    Cool retro toyota I've never seen before!! Retro cars is not for me, the Mustang redesign to go retro was not my thing, odd thunderbird for older people. I think retro is clearly aimed at older people who remember fondly the styling! So when I'm late 50's and they bring out a 80's retro style car I'd go crazy for it! but until then the styling doesn't really take with me!

    Some of the american remakes are really a hit or miss. There have been a bunch. Look at how many restyles the mustang has gone through. The new camaro's have blind spots everywhere. I don't know how anyone can drive them.

    it must have been equipped wiht a lot of extras , in € it's around 49.707€, you could get a nice Mercedes with that amount of money. Not saying the Toyota is not worth it, but it better be well equipped!

      @@wasabicars the Toyota origin down here in America 60 grand will get you a nice Lexus LS. My father would never spend that kind of money for a Toyota. You know how it is. In America if your spending more than 40 grand you want a nice badge in the front.

      @crown674 Před 2 lety

      It costs more than a V-Spec R34 GTR which was ¥5,598,000 ($53,335 adjusted for inflation). The Origin is based on a Toyota Progress which was a mid-size luxury car which falls in the same category as the Mercedes E-class. The most expensive Progress was ¥4,063,500 ($37,130 adjusted for inflation of the year 2004) Wonder how much money Toyota poured into designing the Origin?
