The moment the monolith started moving the lights in my room flickered on and I cant even describe the amount of shit that left my ass
Oh god

At least no blockage.
Lol
Wait thats not normal my lights flicker all the time
People tend to forget that Lovecraftian stories are not only about the paranormal.
They tell the tales of humans living a hard life searching for answers. And, unfortunatelly, finding them.
That is how some of them get their followers. They find broken people who can easily be manipulated if needed.
Despite our laws of physics, of hierarchy, of life, death, and entropy. Despite our understanding of thermodynamics, and dimensions. Despite all this, our universe is nothing more than what we see, hear, and know. Past what we have seen, past what we know, who knows if the same laws apply. If physics is the same, if reality is three dimensions. For reality has no obligation to conform to our rules.

I love Lovercraftian Horror cause unlike normal Horror movies, the "monster" has no weakness. Once it starts all you can do is try to survive for a tiny bit longer, just try to die as fast and painlessly as possible or just watch as this omnipotent entity destroyes all you know. It isn't just "OMG SCARYYYYYYYY!". It also shows us how humans think. How we ask so many questions not knowing that the answer is supposed to stay a mystery to those like us. That knowledge is as big a threat as it is a tool. How things we can't comprehend as humans exist and just looking at their visage can make us go mad. I love it.

I wanted to like your comment but it is on 69 likes sooooo😄😄
That's the thing though, the "monsters" in Lovecraftian horror aren't monsters. They're simply entities that live in our Universe and we are but mere ants in their presence. They don't hate us or want to destroy us but won't bat an eye if they kill us. We and them simply exist and when we witness them our minds just shatter.
I feel like if anyone playing a Cthulhu game and called him “squid daddy” it would probably make them laugh multiple times rather than feeling scared

I know I'm nitpicking here, and I know it's a demo, but I sincerely hope they improve the animations. When Cthulhu rises out of the water, it needs to be slower, more grandiose that truly gives him the weight of the terror his name carries. @@cman4dayz328 I don´t know Robert Shaw´s original voice, but it could be truth.
This game is looking really solid for an indie title that seems to have a pretty low budget. I'm really digging the fact that it never relied on jumpscares or overly-oppressive darkness - I love when horror games are well-lit and just use atmosphere, great music and sound design, and creepy enemy designs for their scares.
Dude, I'm reading through Lovecraft's entire collection and every... little... detail... is familiar. The small statue, the drawings, the monolith, the lost sailor the pyramid thing. ALL OF IT is from one of the stories. This is amazing.
Ya, thank Christ it doesn't also add the suffocating abundance of racism in those books, like they're good books. But they are so incredibly fucking racist
Man that monolith. This game really gets the whole "surreal and insignificant" feeling.

@RadiantSparrow We all do.
There’s potential there. They understand most of the finer points of cosmic horror, visuals are fantastic, voice acting is surprisingly good, controls and mechanics could use a bit of tweaking, and the story definitely needs some smoothing out. If they just got rid of Cthulhu and went their own way with the themes, they could have a solid “Inspired by Lovecraft” cosmic horror game.
I know, right? I feel that using Lovecraft is lazy writing and not utilizing the beautiful, desolate setting this games put you at the beginning to tell a unique horror experience is a missed opportunity. There are other things they can use, like Greek Mythology or a plethora of sea mythology from other cultures that can use as themes.
Personally, I'd like it if they used one of Lovecraft's gods besides Cthulhu. There's plenty of them, after all.
Cthulhu was WAY too small in my opinion, but I agree.
@@mattbatesteacher Cthulhu's design overall was entirely too generic and, to be blunt, boring. I understand that this is a demo and that they're a small team, so I'm willing to forgive them a bit.
@zero two That’s probably why Cthulhu is used so often. Doing the effects for an octopus-headed dragon man is significantly easier than some of Lovecraft’s other entities like Yog-Sothoth. The obelisk beast is one of my favorite parts because of how clever the design is. That’s the main reason I think they should drop the Cthulhu angle entirely and go with their own designs.
That, and Cthulhu is so overexposed these days that he’s running the risk of becoming just another giant monster; more spectacle than substance.
*Damn, this entire video's narration along with the excellent game atmosphere and graphics, great video my dude!*

Wait... The creator of the game is close with Cthulhu?
It's 2020, nothing seems impossible anymore
Maybe he ate some bad clam chowder and saw him in a dream.
He could mean metaphorically. Cthulhu (and some of the monsters on paper talk about having shapes not comprehensive to the mind) is a big thing in Lovecrafts world isn't just about /actual/ monsters. But monsters humans can become when cruel an horrific things happen to them. Or when their minds break. They can be deciphered in many ways.
Cthulhu is based off his ex.
Hey! I too know Cthulhu I drunk with him at the bar. it's funny story really
Also not sure if anyone noticed but the "orca" is a reference to the boat in Jaws. You can see the yellow floaties they used to catch the shark too. Fun little Easter egg.

Read the rats in the walls, it a short read and written by H.P lovecraft, it’s strangely beautiful but extremely unsettling, the little information it gives paints a horrifying picture, I highly suggest reading it
3:10 this God is the main God in Cthulu Mythos, supposedly reality as we know it is just a dream of a powerful ancient entity, once the God wakes up it's all over like nothing ever happened but that doesnt mean it wasn't real, the God is so powerful that even his subconscious mind creates entire universes with their own laws of physics, cultures, people, planets, and even galaxies, HP Lovecraft's mind is truly a work of art
The slumbering God mentioned is not Cthulu, infact Cthulu isnt even that big or powerful, Cthulu is a minor God but even still its powerful enough to kill anyone that looks at it
While it’s possible that the game is referencing Azathoth, I think it’s more likely talking about Cthulhu. Yes, Cthulhu is just a Great Old One, he’s worshiped among humans, deep ones, and star spawn as a god, not to mention his role as the slumbering priest. As when he awakens he will call upon the Outer gods, which many of his followers see as gaining a forbidden knowledge of sorts. Azathoth however, is not known by many humans, as his worshipers actively try to keep him asleep. In reality, the only true god of the mythos is Azathoth, but I digress. Nevertheless, the works Lovecraft and his inspirations on Eldridge horror are truly an amazing work of art.
(I might be wrong on some points though, either way this game looks great)
It’s not so much that Cthulhu is powerful enough to kill whoever looks at him as it is that the human mind can’t handle how WRONG his existence is. He violates every law of physics that we know. The famous octopus-headed image we have of him isn’t even necessarily what he actually looks like, just the closest his worshipers’ minds could get to interpreting him. The Great Old Ones defy what we think we know about the universe, and while we can ignore the smaller ones (one of the stories stated that they walk all around us in the forgotten corners of the world, our minds just REFUSE to acknowledge their existence and block them out except for the smell), beings like Cthulhu, Shub-Niggurath, Tsathoggua, or Yig are simply too massive, too IMPOSING to ignore, and so the mind simply... shuts down (especially that of the protagonists, who have usually been through hell and back by the point they see the monstrosity.).
Don’t get me wrong, they have TERRIFYING power. Cthulhu, for example, is an immensely powerful psychic, and without even realizing it projects his “dreams” into human minds, showing them horrible truths, and, yes, driving them mad without even being aware of them. And that’s while he’s in what amounts to a coma, at his weakest. They are as gods to us, and that’s not even getting into the Outer Gods like Nyarlathotep. Just to put things in perspective, Cthulhu is his HIGH PRIEST. Nyarlathotep has outright subjugated the gods of man in Kadath. But it’s not their power that makes us go mad. Or, at least, it isn’t A power of theirs to do that. It’s their very existence as a concept, what they mean for our place in the universe (aka we are NOTHING), and what they bring with them (horrible carnage and destruction, where humanity will either become like them or perish).
On that note, I don’t think the cultists here were talking about Azathoth. Cthulhu is sometimes referred to as Dreaming Cthulhu, or the Great Dreamer, because of his deathlike sleep. And since him awakening is the first sign of the return of the Old Ones, it makes sense that his status as a “slumbering god” be important.
Ph’nglui mglw'nafh Cthulhu R’lyeh wgah'nagl fthagn, after all.
I love it when people get into Lovecraft's writings. I love literature but I have yet to read any of his works. I really need to, he truly is the master.
Shalyn 9613
Oh, his stuff is incredible. He has a very unique writing style which I have yet to see properly emulated. Just be warned some of his prejudices shine through here and there. I’d also recommend Lin Carter’s stories, as well as various anthologies you can likely find online (“The Cthulhu Mythos Megapack” is a collection of 40 stories set in Lovecraft’s cosmology, which I believe is free online). A modern novel which is beautifully crafted, if you can get your hands on it, is “The Feeders from Within”, by... uh, lemme get back to you on that, I’ve forgotten the author’s name.
Edit: Peter J. Evans! That’s the author’s name. I also recommend “That Which Should Not Be” by Brett J. Talley.
@@Nobythulhu I can understand that, that's usually a turn off for many people. I'm honestly here for the art because he has influenced a lot.
