    The materials used in the anode and cathode set the voltage, the electrolyte and surface area set the current. Carbon and Magnesium are about as good as you can get. Here is the Galvanic table - the voltage you get from your battery is the difference between the two numbers shown for the materials - graphite (carbon) 0.2 - Magnesium -1.6, so the voltage could be as much as -1.8v en.wikipedia.o...

    Really interesting Graham.
    Here are my thoughts.
    The electrons will travel along the steel even though it is connected to lead or any other metal that will produce electricity while submerged in an electrolyte which in this case is just boiled tap water.
    The crocodile clips are metal, so it depends on the type of metal they are clipped to that will create a reaction of either good or bad electricity production but there must be more going on because the readings change when the crocodile clip and the lead or magnesium are submerged together. Need to be a chemist to figure that out. I would also use a more reliable multimeter.
    I was very surprised at the voltage increase when you moved the magnesium about in the water and the voltage difference when the metal rod in the lead was submerged along with the lead.
    Lots of odd chemical reactions must be happening that I don't understand and this was just boiled water.
    Might be interesting with salt water or something similar to see if the odd relations still happen.
    Obviously, I know that salt water will act as a better electrolyte but it was the other voltage changes that I found strange.
    Enjoyed this a lot. 🔌 👌👍👍👍

      Here is my take on it after having a bit of time to think about what is going on.
      It is not the current flowing through the steel that is important, it is the current flowing through the water.
      As Slider2732 commented, it is similar having two resistors in parallel. The end resistance is not the lowest value resistor.
      Although we are looking at voltages generated by the galvanic effect rather than resistances, it is all part of the same sort of thing.
      Maybe think of two batteries in parallel
      The Steel/water/copper is battery A
      The Magnesium/water/copper is battery B
      They are in parallel because the same water is connecting them both, so what voltage is generated?
      It is not a simple addition. Remember how excited people get when we talk about putting LiPo cells in parallel when one of them is dead.
      The circuit will try to drive both cells to the same voltage so the higher voltage must drop.
      The main thing I took from this is it is easy to be sloppy in setting up an experiment and the results you get can vary quite dramatically when you have missed a simple basic criteria.
      Somebody had pointed out in one of my potato experiments I had allowed two potatos to touch. That would have allowed electricity to flow directly between them rather than through the electrodes and wires I had connected.
      And finally, YES, that meter does not do me any favours, but I have to give it a try 🤣

    I think you simply need a new multimetre. Preferably a better one, with a higher impedance too.
    Thanks for sharing your experiments and food luck!

      @alinochis1514 As shown in previous videos, I picked up this meter in a charity shop, so using it in videos is part of the process of finding out what it does well and what its issues are. For filming, the large display is useful, but it clearly has issues.

    Good tests. It was one of those commonly held beliefs that am glad you tried. I think it's like parallel resistors, where the end resistance isn't the lowest value of resistor in the circuit.
    15:38 was hilarious 😂

      I like the size of the display on that meter, but I don't trust the readings. However I will probably keep using it to familiarise myself with it's "features".

      @@GrandadsOtherChannel Did notice it seems to have a wonky selector dial. Am not sure if you've done a pencil eraser/rubbing alcohol type clean up of one of those (on vid) but they are quite fascinating how the little dash tracks work. Often have a couple of ball bearings in them too that like to drop onto the floor!

      @GrandadsOtherChannel  Před měsícem

      Hi Ann. I have done a whole series of videos using different electrolytes, including salt water solutions, ice-cream, milk, soft cheese, tea, mud. These two videos were specifically about what happens if you allow the crocidile clips and/or other parts of the circuit to get in the water (Or whatever you are using for the electrolyte). It messes up the results.

    Your experiment is of little use. When comparing two (or more) materials You need to test them in the same condition. Same surface area, same distance. etc.

    • @GrandadsOtherChannel
      @GrandadsOtherChannel  Před měsícem

      @darthclone2002 I guess I didn't make it clear enough. This is specifically about what difference it makes if the steel rod of the lead weight touches the water OR the crocodile clips touch the water. As shown, the difference between the lead and the steel was negligible, but when the crocodile clip on the magnesium touched the water, there was a significant drop in the voltage. SO, if you are sloppy in your setup and allow the crocodile clips to touch the water, you are not getting the results for the magnesium. Read my thoughts in my reply on the pinned comment.
