YOU MAY NEVER THIN AGAIN! - An Onion Experiment

  • I decided to dedicate a small 4’x8’ bed to growing onions (red, white, and yellow) in order to see the difference in yield of thinning or not thinning the planted rows. In the end both methods were very close in weight. The only noticeable difference was in the size of the onions (these were the yellow onions). Being that we don’t usually use an entire onion when we cook anyway, I think I will sow my onion rows and let them be, no thinning required. In fact I prefer the smaller size. I also planted the red and white onions much tighter than I have in past seasons to see if it would hinder the growth. I was pleased to find they grew just fine and were a much more useable size, just smaller than a baseball on average. Many of the onions I’ve grown in the past, even this year in another bed of the garden, tend to be much larger than they need to be. This was a valuable lesson in space management and size difference, while still getting the same yield weight. Thanks for stopping by-
