Can A Hill Really Charge A Porsche Taycan?

  • I wanted to find out if it was really possible to get energy back in to the battery using regen - more than we were using.

    Hi, I live in Switzerland in 1200m elevation. I have roughly 8km to the valley in 700m elevation (a route I drive multiple times per week). I drive a 1yr old Taycan 4S CT. With regen activated I usually average -20kWh/100km (max -25kWh100km in summer) going downhill. In those 8km I will generate +3% SoC and see an added 10km of range. I even get a bit more regenerated energy, if I drive behind another vehicle in auto-regen mode (vs full regen mode)
    Obviously I use ‘comparable’ more energy driving uphill in opposite direction
    However, Porsche Taycan is a beast at regen. I believe from empirical experiment’s that I have less consumption when I I drive the same elevated route back and forth vs driving flat he same distance/speed. E.g I once drove 40km started in 1200m via 700m to 1200m, and return to starting point (I.e in total 80km) with an average consumption of 16,6kWh/100km (assuming net 85kW capacity battery, that correspond to a range of +500km). Never saw that type of efficiency on a flat road.
    Clearly I’m an a happy owner, and can’t imaging a better daily driver car for the Swiss alps.

      You’re welcome. Indeed it’s possible to increase SoC. as a consequence I never charge to 100% when at home-location, as I will otherwise miss out on the ‘free’ energy’.
      When I was learning to use the car, I once had a situation where auto-regen suddenly didn’t work (almost scary, going downhill). This, I realised, was due to the battery reaching 100% SoC and hence not able to regen any further.

    I can't believe that no matter how fast your car goes or looks, there will always be someone in their 1.6L diesel crossover, suv, hothatch or van drives right behind your bumper.

      Remember in the 90s , the fastest cars on the roads were Astra and Astra vans. Most had go faster body kits.

      I was only using brake pedal regen for additional control - had to brake as these things coast quickly!

    You got no free energy at all, you spent more electric energy to get up the hill to gain gravitational potential energy. Then when going downhill you convert that gravitational potential energy back to electric charge in the battery via regen.
    As with all machines there is loss via inefficiency. Laws of thermodynamics are fun.

      Wait, you're telling me there's no such thing as free energy?
