In todays Episode of is it worth it, Dustin goes over some twin turbo goodness, that being the EcoBoost F-150. This shook up the market and drifted far away from the infamous 5.0 liter V8 that has owned the Ford market in years past. This engine has no issues keeping up with the pack though so sit back and relax you are about to get learnt!

I got a 11' F150 with the 3.5L currently at 216k miles. Only things that went wrong are the transmission blew (my fault) and the water pump started leaking and had it replaced. Other than that she is strong. Can spin my 35x12.5s easily it is leveled. The secret to keep this engine going is to do your basic maintenance.

I kind of screwed up and bought a RV that’s gonna be right at edge of what I’d be comfortable towing with the Ranger (28’ and about 6800lbs) so I’m not sure if I need a bigger truck for safety if I get a older PowerStroke (7.3 preferably but open to a 6.0 if it’s in good shape) or a F150 with one of the Ecoboosts.

Drove it across the country for pipeline and it saw all types of terrain and long idle or drive time. The motor is an absolute stud. My favorite gas engine I’ve ever had. Close second would be the 5.3. Only downside to the eco boost is if you do a level with 33x12.50 your gas mileage takes a huge hit. Lifting it is oven worse. My 16 only got like 11.5 to 12 most of the time. Good looking trucks though.

I have 2016 f150 lariat eco boost 3.5 . The power that such a small cubic inch engine can put out amazes me , and it’s hard to comprehend this is just an engine out of a Taurus .
I had a 2010 Mazda truck with the 4.0 litre ,and the mileage was worse and the truck smaller too boot, so it’s quite an accomplishment to have far better ergonomics and better mileage with no negatives that I have found so far .
Maybe I’ll change my mind if I have a catastrophic failure , but I only have 27,000 kilometres on it since I purchased it in 2016, and ford changes the oil when they swap the winter tires off and on, so she’s getting a major amount of oil changes to actual miles used

Curious how many miles you have on it. I am looking into the PowerBoost but am concerned about longevity in a twin turbo v6. I have a 2004 Tahoe with the 5.3 with 200k and never an issue aside from replacing water pump at 180k. Looking for a new truck I can get 200k out of with no major issues.

Looking to buy an F-150 EcoBoost within the next two weeks. I’ve already experienced the EcoBoost in an Explorer Sport, and it is no joke. It is by far the most refined engine I’ve ever been behind, and also very quiet. At idle it ticks away quietly at 600 rpm’s. But this is no lazy engine, you put your foot into it and if you’ve got the radio turned down you hear the turbo spool and the endless torque just starts pushing you down the road. This engine doesn’t even break a sweat towing anything under 5,000 lbs, and you’ve got plenty of passing power at disposal. The one huge drawback with this engine is that mercilessly guzzles gas. When driving on backroads, it only managed to average 20 mpg. The best I’ve ever gotten from it was on a 3 hour long highway trip where it managed 32 mpg, but I haven’t seen those kinds of numbers ever again. Great engine, just be ready to maintain it religiously and pay for only slightly better fuel economy than a V8.

I currently have a 2020 f150 with the 2.7 ecoboost and it has been a great truck. I also had a 2018 (same truck basically) with the 2.7 and I beat the hell out of it. It handled everything just fine and I never had an issue. I would probably buy an ecoboost based off my almost 4 years experience driving them but I would probably go with the 3.5. The 2.7 is a great little engine but it is pushing almost 30 pounds of boost so longevity is something i'd be more concerned with.
