    "Weight of the World" -- according to prominent theories of the game -- refers to the weight of having to derive meaning from the world, and how tough it can be to do that without self-destructing.
    But, as the game postulates, that weight is much easier to bear if we carry it together -- hence when all three singers come together to finish out the album, and even a chorus comes in at the end. Makes me cry every time :')

    • @-libertyprimev1-902

      Added note, the Chorus is made up of the Developers and their Families.

    • @trevorveillette8415
      @trevorveillette8415 Před 2 lety +30

      I've always considered each song not necessarily a commentary on deriving meaning in our existence. But instead I consider each song to be about, or from, each character and their heart. Their inner feelings. 2B undoubtedly feels like she's carrying the weight of the world.
      Just look at the cover image of automata. She's carrying 9S, her world. He means everything to her. She means everything to him

    • @BroudbrunMusicMerge
      @BroudbrunMusicMerge Před 2 lety +10

      @@trevorveillette8415 Oh, absolutely. I'm sure each singer represents a different character -- in _addition_ to that, I think the song title doubles as a meaning for the game as a whole.

    • @trevorveillette8415
      @trevorveillette8415 Před 2 lety +7

      @@BroudbrunMusicMerge well most definitely. It's well....the song of automata. Or more accurately it's THE song of automata.
      Its the song that most represents automata and what it's about. Especially since the final message of the game is essentially a tie in, into the song.
      That life is miserable never ending pain and suffering that ways down on us, impossible to lift on our own. But with the help of loved ones, or even just our fellow human, suddenly the weight of the world isn't so heavy on us. That's more or less the idea of automata, or the theme I should day.
      What interests me the most about this song is the chaos language segment. It's pretty much fully acknowledged that the English portion is 2B, Japanese is 9S, but chaos language is 1 of 2 possible things.
      It's either A2, or it's YoRHa. I personally lean towards A2, but the rough translations of sound-alike words have lead some to believe it's potentially a song about YoRHa, or sang by YoRHa.

      I love that, cause one thing I feel can ruin vocal soundtracks is lyrics and knowing the words. I've always loved when a voice is more used as an instrument by itself and it's about the feel and emotion it conveys than what is actually sung.
      I can feel the latter is like the song is trying to explain to you what to feel and think when listening, and sometimes the emotion the soundtrack conveys just doesn't match the lyrics in your mind or limits it, particularly sad love songs that could be about general loss of love to simply "my girlfriend broke up".

    [SPOILERS ON THE END OF THE GAME AHEAD]
    When I first hit the final credits, it felt so... helpless. I was given this window into manipulating the outcome myself, refusing to let 2B, 9S and A2 just die - but even then, it just felt so hopeless, so impossibly hard, like nothing wanted me to just allow those three some manner of good ending, you know?
    And Weight of the World hits, emphasizing that feeling... but then I got help. Player names started popping up - the chorus of people singing along swelled and swelled, every name that popped up another player's save data sacrificed for me to allow those three their goddamn happy ending, even if the game didn't want me to.
    And after everything, when I saw what that meant - that I was given the option to sacrifice my own save data to, maybe, help someone else out there reach the end... my name popping up on their screen, just some unknown bunch of letters, soon forgotten and no "thank you" ever given or received - really nothing in it for me but to _possibly_ help out someone I'll never meet in any capacity, with nothing in return... knowing I had reached the end because _others_ had done so with their own save data...
    ... for fuck's sake, man. This game.

      No it doesn't. Replicant came after Automata. Replicant's style was almost a continuation of the audio style of Automata. Do you mean that Automata carried over a lot of foundation from the original NieR? Like Halua, Grandma, Song of the Ancients? If so, that makes more sense. Please don't refer to Replicant as the original. It's not. It's a remake of of the original.

    It's crazy that I'm only just realizing this now, but I always thought the vocals for Weight of the World in every version were a bit too quiet compared to the rest of the arrangement, and now it makes complete sense because it's as if the song was designed with the choir in mind to fill out the rest of the sound. In all of those other versions with each singer by herself, she really is carrying the weight of the world, i.e. the weight of the song itself, and the truth really IS that she's only one girl. It took the combined voices of all of these other people to fully "carry the weight" of the entire song. Absolutely brilliant.

    55:10 Ah, now- that sounds like a "mixed-meter" kinda thing, doesn't it (sometimes notated as two time signatures next to one another on a stave, the first corresponding to the first bar, the second to the second). Classic example would be "America" from West Side Story- that "DA-da-da DA-da-da / DA-da DA-da DA-da" rhythm. :)
    As for that vocoded-sounding vocal, it *could* be a bespoke "tone filter" that was created in-house, which essentially reshaped sines into square waves: if you look on Platinum Games's blog, the guy who implemented the in-game soundtrack (Masami Ueda) explains how this technique was used frequently during certain player-triggered events- it's an interesting read if you can find it. (I suspect I can't post links here for obvious reasons!😄)
