    The original Judgment was my game of the year in 2019, but with its standalone nature largely solving the internal struggle of its protagonist Yagami, I felt like last year's Lost Judgment was left searching for that human anchor to ground the wild events of its plot. Well, after playing through the recently released Kaito Files DLC and becoming utterly engrossed with it, it's clear that the answer was staring us in the face all along-the titular Masaharu Kaito. In this analysis, let's talk about the hidden depths of this burly ex-yakuza's character, and why he may have been the series' biggest strength all along.

    Really loved the Kaito Files alot more than i was expecting to! The story and characters are fantastic. also best RGG final boss ever ;)
    but speaking of Yagami, (SPOILERS AHEAD)
    I have been pondering what the story lacked in Lost Judgment and I think the main issue is that they killed off Sawa and did so waay too early at that. Like Yagami is basically forced to take a position before he even has a chance to wrestle with it. It would have been interesting to watch them grow together from being initially standoffish. Also I think having an emotional confrontation between Sawa and Kuwana would have been far better than the way they killed her off which had very little emotional impact.

    • @mjc0961
      @mjc0961 Před 2 lety +17

      Agreed that they did it too early. And then Yagami just spends so much of the rest of the game whining at other characters, "What about Sawa?"
      Meanwhile I kept thinking, how many times did Sawa ask to be left alone and Yagami kept pushing her in pursuit of his ideal of justice? He's got just as much blood on his hands as anyone else he lectured/fought over it. Obviously Yagami's still way more morally right than the other characters, I can't deny that, but I also can't ignore he kept pushing for what he wanted without much regard for the consequences paid by others just like everyone else in the story.

    • @MrOrdinaryundone
      @MrOrdinaryundone Před rokem +5

      @@mjc0961 I guess the idea is that Yagami, like Kuwana, knows that he fucked up but unlike Kuwana is willing to stop it there. I too thought it was weird and her relationship with Yagami needed to be more fleshed out but she's basically here in proxy for the woman Yagami "got killed" when he got Okubo off his murder charge. If there is one thing Yagami will never let slide it's an innocent person getting caught in the crossfire so while it IS weird that Yagami barely seems to acknowledge his own role in Sawa's death, he is at least the only one acknowledging it at all. Plus getting caught up in self-blame would only forward the aims of the people who actually carry the majority of the blame, Soma and to a lesser extent Kuwana, so he's gotta save it for later. I really wish we'd actually gotten to see that "later" though, or at least Yagami grieving in more than a "Damn, they got one over on me" kinda way to really drive home WHY Sawa's death is so personal to him.

It is good at what RGG games have always been good at. The investigative part, which differentiates it, is serviceable at best. If Kimutaku can't continue or if SEGA doesn't want to continue with a console-exclusive franchise, they'll simply create another brawler game series. 4:21 - Not only that, but he's also not a reskin of other character's fighting styles. Sure, we'd all have noticed if they made him a reskin of Kiryu, but they could have done for some lesser known character and probably mostly gotten away with it. How many people remember how one and done characters like Tanimura or Shinada fight? They could have even pinched stuff from Fist of the North Star: Lost Paradise. But nope. Kaito gets his own fighting style.

    You know, I wouldn't be surprised if they ever did a protagonist that, not only would've been what Japanese society would class as "gaijin", but also somebody who, whilst I guess on the surface, would have a rather Trevor Phillips from GTA kind of flair to them, what with being quick to anger, incredibly brash and blunt about things, coupled with a "don't give a shit" sort of attitude, probably usually finding some place to get smashed, and likely wouldn't shy away from killing a guy, if pushed too far, could actually have some interesting "method behind the madness" of sorts, and part of their own personal journey, aside from adjusting to Japan's underbelly and way of living, was essentially just to find some way to break the ice, and begin some long road of resolution of sorts (however long that might be).
    Probably even have a bit of an inverse to what went on with Kaito.
    Like, seeing as he supposedly chose the lifestyle he lead, and had some regrets about some of those choices he made, I can see this person be someone who constantly felt cheated out of a better lifestyle, through no fault of their own, and therefore pretty much developed these anger management and violent tendency problems, alongside a possible persecution complex, and just coming off as simply unapproachable to most people.
    Possibly even having the events of their story kick off from essentially being used as the perfect scapegoat, for some crime that went on. As well as possibly having a fighting style more akin to classic Yakuza games, with one singular style, that you can build more moves onto, as you progress, alongside being able to do stuff that Kaito or Yagami wouldn't dare touch with a ten foot pole, like use guns or bladed weapons, as well as possibly even having a few allusions to being in a ton of barfights in the past, with the amount of ways they could utilize booze in fights.

      Honestly aside from the foreigner part, you kinda described Tatsuya Ukyo from Kurohyou (Yakuza Black Panther). His parents were killed by a fire in the champion district, leaving him orphaned. Without even a father figure like Kazama for Kiryu and only an older sister for family, he became a ruthless bully. He would beat the shit out of anyone who annoyed him, including his closest friends, and was basically a sadist. This, to me at least, shows me that he shows a degree of sensitivity because of his upbringing. Eventually, he becomes an anti-social loner and the events of Kurohyou unfold his redemption arc as he comes to terms with his actions.

    The whole point of Judgment's existence is having a game with Kimutaku. Some even call the game Kimutaku Ga Gotoku. Also, it's not like the series is irreplaceable. It is good at what RGG games have always been good at. The investigative part, which differentiates it, is serviceable at best. If Kimutaku can't continue or if SEGA doesn't want to continue with a console-exclusive franchise, they'll simply create another brawler game series. For me, that we only have one more game and that they move on. A trilogy is fine.

    I have played every Yakuza game starting from 0, Both judgments, and now this. Out of everything, I genuinely think that the Kaito Files is the single best story ever told. Kaito is just so damn cool. I wish he'd taken over instead of Ichiban. I do love Ichiban tho. Kaito is a beast though.
    On that note I'd like to add, Tanimura from Yakuza 4 would be an excellent addition to the Judgment cast. It would make a RGG fanboy like myself very happy.

    Kaito Files asking price is not worth it imo. The story is fantastic but other than that, not much.
    Like pretty sure Kiwami was like $30 and it came with stuff to do unlike Kaito Files. We're pretty much paying for slightly better Majima Saga here. There's not even a New Game+ here and it is such an awful decision, like most of the skills are locked behind a skill book you need to find.
    Buy the season pass instead if you haven't, you'll still get the DLC at a cheaper price.

    It's literally just the Majima Saga with better writing.
    All you do is go from waypoint to waypoint, watch a 30 minute cutscene, do one boss fight, then watch another 30 minute cutscene. Repeat five times, THEN do it all again for the next three chapters. There are no sidecases, no new activities, NOTHING new to do.
    This DLC would have been better if it was directed by David Cage.
