I 100% Completed Lost Judgment. Here’s My Review.

- Thanks again to SEGA for the free PS5 version of the game (I've since purchased my own physical copy for my Yakuza collection). Lost Judgment released a couple months ago now, and I've put over 100 hours into it, savoring every second of it and experiencing it. Now, I've emerged from the Yakuza Bunker to tell you all about how the game excels, and how it falters in comparison to the Yakuza pedigree.

Just as a little update. The 2021 PlayStation wrap up came out and I actually put a bit over 130 hours in all in all. About to make it more with the Legend play through soon 😅

It's still insane how good this studio is at making the exact same locations feel totally fresh in each entry.
It's the OST like honestly they didn't disappoint with any boss themes in this game. They really gave every boss their full effort with each theme. Daimu is my favorite character but my favorite theme is Soma's theme.
@@Gemini__HML Especially Kitakata's final boss theme. One of the best tracks they've ever had in a RGG game lol.

I feel like the reason why kamurocho feel fresh is simple.
Kamurocho feels alive, play kiwami fuck around for like an hour then go play kiwami 2, you'll just feel it, these streets feel the same yet still evolving
GOTY! The original Judgments story was stronger imo but the massive amount of content present in LJ makes it the superior title.
The Final Boss In Lost Judgment was superior ;) ! The theme too!
RGG really let me down not including the Monkey Ball arcade game.
My only actual issue with the narrative is missed potential with Yagami's motivation versus the main antagonist's. Yagami has deep experience with the effects of vigilante justice with his own family being murdered in the backstory of the first game, but that never comes up where it would be very relevant in the plot of Lost Judgment, and would make him a genuine equal to the villain instead of relying on repeating a single character's name whenever he's backed into a philosophical corner.

Damn, I didn't even think about that. That could of actually been really good.
I binged the second half of the main story because I wanted to see where it was going, and I got really tired of Yagami bringing that character up in every single scene. It kind of ruined the emotional impact when that became Yagami's go-to counter to any point. It made him seem like a weaker detective who couldn't form arguments against the vigilante philosophy, because he went straight for the guilt gut-punch every time.
If the conflict actually made use of Yagami's background elaborated in the first game it would possibly be the best story in the franchise.
For some reason, the backstory only comes up in the school stories instead of the main one where it's needed.
Lost Judgment took my heart, it's easily my favorite Yakuza game, I love everything about it
I really hope we get a third entry focusing more on Yagami as a character and his relationships. The cast of Judgement in general just feels a bit dry compared to the Yakuza series. I wouldn't be surprised if Takuya Kimura's agency is restricting Yagami's characterization for the sake of his image, he's a bit one note and lacks any meaningful character development besides coming to terms with his guilt in the first game.
I think the biggest hangup I still have with LJ is that it sort of square pegs a few returning characters to git the narrative direction. But in the same breath, it works well enough that it's an asterisk on an incredible game.
Seeing Sugiura go from an involved character to "No I'm not a thief, anyway what needs stolen" hurt me more than my dad leaving
I think certain twists and plot points may be unusual, but I find it's ability to stir discussion a really good point. In fact it may be the whole purpose of the jarring twists, and I don't find the plot to be that negative to take away from the whole experience. Gameplay wise this is perhaps the best in the series, with about as much side content as 5 and combat deeper than even 0. I prefer the original's story, but everything LJ does right lifts it high above just about every game in RGG history for me

I'm sorry but the Boxer Style is just so... So... GOOD MAN. It's damage is up there with charged Tiger moves, and it's juggling/combo potential is huge thanks to it having probably the quickest dash to attack speed.
The fact that no one even batted an eye to this when talking about videos games in 2021 is astounding, it was definetly the best game of that year especially compared to all the dumpster fires that came out that year. it sucks that not much people know abt RGG games. Love the Yakuza series and everything that came from it
Agreed. Lost Judgement was easily my pick for GOTY in 2021 imho.

This probably won’t happen but I would like to see the cast from these games interact with the main cast.
I completed the robotics club and boxing club so far and been really enjoying it.
Ehara’s crimes are a good metaphor for Lost Judgement. Sure he’s a cop who might have committed sexual battery, to cover for murder, but he’s also a cop who lost a kid to suicide, was divorced, and mentally broken by it. Yeah sure this game kinda drops a lot of the backstory of Judgement, but that’s not the main focus of what’s at hand. There’s no such thing as the “perfect crime” just like there’s no such thing as a perfect game, but like both, you can get pretty damn close. Personally I liked Kuwana and Soma, especially how Kuwana was more lawful then Soma and yet more Chaotic then Yagami. The only thing I didn’t like…was Akutsu’s fate.

The original Judgment was pretty amazing to me. (So far I've played: Yakuza, Zero, Kiwami 1 and 2, and currently "7").
I'm happy to see a sequel here and know that's it's a worthwhile follow-up.
This Game is GOTY material. While I agree with you on there is at least 1 club I wanted to get through (Robotics) I really liked the School Stories. I will purchase the DLC for the Kaito Files alone. I really appreciate your fair review, especially if I was a newcomer to the series. One of my only disappointments is not enough cross blending of the Characters from Like a Dragon and Judgment series. There is no way you don't Run into Ichiban in ijincho.

@@user-ov6yp3kq1j oh yes! Actually please do if you can! If you haven't completed the story yet it adds dynamics to Yagami, Kaito etc. You have so much to do with the school stories added to the main story.

I love this game so much but the only thing I disliked was how you got side cases from the social spots
the boxer style was the most broken ass over powered DLC pay-to-win style there is.
I haven't gotten into Yakuza and Judgement but from what I have been told, unless made a big point in story, beating high schoolers up with crazy style combos exist withing an alternative special dimension where these excessive violence doesn't fully exist in canon
This is not a point against it btw. it's part of the charm
It's the same pocket dimension where Kiryu shoots people and hits them with electrical panels.

I never really liked Crane style in either game, wasn't that fond of Majima's Breakdance style in Yakuza 0 either.
Swapping between styles is neat but I really think combat was best in Yakuza 4 when each character had their own unique style, viable for every situation, and you had to learn them all. Even Hariku's dance mini game in Yakuza 5 was a better mix up in my opinion.
I ended up playing mostly Snake style wich reminded me a bit of Masayoshi Tanimura's fighting style in Yakuza 4
That may have been true to the first judgment, but crane was my go to style in Lost judgement due to improvements and upgrades added.,
I did the same, but for the original Judgment! Mahjong truly is my worst enemy... Working on the Legend run now for that Platinum.
I really enjoyed Lost Judgment though! I thought the themes it covered and the overall story were fantastic.

It is free to play from 25-28 i completed it in 4,5 hours . Really good game . I completed every Yakuza and 100% kiwami 2, 6 and like a dragon .
I'd easily consider Lost Judgement to be a vastly better game compared to it's predecessor. And as much as I enjoyed the first Judgement's storyline, this one was much better paced.
I like LJ story than the first coz LJ not so much about Yakuza.

Yeah, the price tag on the DLC is outrageous. I usually buy DLC for games I love, but I couldn't justify that.
I can't really blame you! I'd love to whole-heartedly recommend everything about this game, but damn they didn't make it easy haha.
I hated the school segments. A fun and interesting story completely ruined by having to grind boring minigames
One thing I liked about the Mortal Wound system of Judgment was that it incentivized the player to use the Wall Attacks more to counter the Mortal Wound attacks and find an opening in their seemingly invincible attacks. Sadly though with the exclusion of Mortal Wounds, the Wall Attacks kinda lost their purpose so they're more of an option in battle that is very easy to forget because Yagami's moveset is so well rounded now that his regular attacks are better instead of having to start a run and maybe awkwardly run into a wall.

@@mydogeatspuke True, but at least there was an incentive to use the wall attacks, if you didn't want to spend your Heat for that. Now it's only for damage or style.

I loved Lost Judgment and came very close to 100%ing the game. But after about chapter 7 the story fell apart for me. I didn't like Kuwana and I think Soma was a way more interesting villan.
The combat was gas though literal 10/10 for me
A way I would describe the story in comparison to the original would be to much scale with less of the stakes.
The first one: Judgment is better.. This one is Nice and all but difficulty is left from everything and every side games ect...it's too easy so WE don't have pleasure to get platinum trophy 100%...shame.
