  • Judgment Retrospective:
    With Kiryu's journey now finished (tries to ignore the Yakuza 8 promotion) we now continue on with our adventures in Kamurocho with a new face and title as in Judgment we follow, a former detective, Takayuki Yagami, as goes about looking to bring justice into the streets of this corrupt town. With Yagami coming into the lime light it begs the question if he's a good replacement for Kiryu...he's not but there's a good reason for that and you'll have to watch the video to hear what it is.

    Judgment and Lost judgment are amazing. Some of the most fun ive had playing "yakuza" games, some of the best narratives as well. Whats crazy is that the combat goes from great, to legit best in the series in lost judgment. The dragon engine reaches its peak in that game and the tech you can pull off is insane. In this game a great way to negate the dragon engine bounce back when fighting is doing the leapfrog+square to get them stunned, as well as tiger style charge attacks, and in LJ the bounce back pretty much becomes non existent. In terms of your gripe with the ex gauge, landing a successful flux fissure will give a ton of heat so use those often and you wont find yourself running out of heat. I saw you trying to do them through the video but you may have missed the timing because if you do it correctly theyll fly back. Great video tho.

    • @riku582
      @riku582  Před rokem +7

      Never thought of using leap frog to ignore the push back, and I don't think I ever got someone to fly back when using flux fissure, I'll definitely take those into account whenever I come back to Judgment. And man I can't wait to get to Lost Judgment that game is so much fun.

    Yakuza 7 got me into the series, and I had the platinum a month and a half later. Then, while checking the overview (press down on the PS main menu), I chuckled seeing the pun they set up on the "More from this series" screen. They had "Solve a Mystery" (Judgment) and "Rewrite History" (Yakuza 0) next to each other, and I instantly knew what my next game was.
    Moving into the brawler style combat, I can safely say that Judgment helped with _so_ much of my frustration for action games; I tried getting into Devil May Cry ~6 months ago, but it felt overwhelmingly deep, and I was out after the first V chapter 😅. Judgment helped break that curse by having some similar elements like directional attacks and lock-on-to-dodge. Legitimately, the first time I figured out the quickstep, I said "OHHH, it's like DMC!" That mentality, combined with my maturing past the whole "button mashing bad" mindset, really helped the combat click for me!
    Cut to three weeks later, I finished the story and loved every second of it. I did play with the English dub on, and the cast was nothing but A- and S- tiers all the way! You already gushed about it, but Crispin Freeman _slaps_ as Kaito; that was a perfect casting choice. Surprisingly overlooked, though, is Greg Chun as Yagami. He's got the exact voice I'd expect for a streetwise detective, and he 100% fits Yagami's appearance. Matt Mercer as Kuroiwa owned every scene, but when _doesn't_ Matt Mercer overdeliver? A neat thing is that Greg _and_ Matt had key roles in Like A Dragon as well, and with both of _those_ characters having upcoming roles in Gaiden and Infinite Wealth, I'm interested to see if they hold onto the two star VAs.
    Hell, I could drone on about this game for _hours_ if I had someone to talk to about it! The postgame grind for friendship quests *(ALL MY HOMIES HATE MAHJONG),* VR money collecting, and finishing the last two side cases all leave me with plenty of time to reflect (like the sewer job level grinding in 7 😬). Once I complete Judgment, I'm thinking of going straight into LJ to tide me over until Infinite Wealth in '24. In the meantime, videos like this one help tide me over until I get a ron or tsumo! 😅

      @@riku582I think lost judgment has the best combat in the Yakuza series not because you just have four styles available to you( the boxer Style is DLC but there's a discount for right now in the digital store(26$) I went for that lol) but the problem I had with Yakuza 0 wasn't the combat itself the combat was great but the progression to the combat was very bad I felt like it was unnecessary the place limitations on the player and the character itself I would have been fine if getting the higher moves would have been expensive I would been perfectly fine with that but the game just locks you out of moves for no reason I'm not talkin about the training I'm talking about the CP progression it really didn't sit well with me but was lost judgement I didn't feel like I was limited to the moves I had I progressively with able to unlock moves and while this isn't the fault of Yakuza 0 I felt like locked moves were much better attainable than Yakuza 0 and less tedious.

    • @keeper2335
      @keeper2335 Před 7 měsíci

      @riku582 No problem! And to be a bit more clear. It's not a one shot on bosses, but does deal a good chunk of damage if you get the timing right.
      Speaking of timing, I've found it works best to hit it /right/ when it enters the square. Especially once you get the upgrade to expand the square.
      I've also noticed that bosses tend to block it after the first or second time of using it. But still, it's great for add clearing, and charging heat gauge while doing so.
      Great video, by the way!

    Having tried tirelessly to finish this game (Which resulted in A few spankings from my Father because literally every night when I needed to go to bed, A cutscene’d be playing and I didn’t want to ruin the immersion.), I’m just popping in to see how you regard it. The point I’m currently in in the video is you talking about the story, so that’s why I’m typing this, nos, so as to not get any bias from any comments you’ve made on how you percieve it. In my view, Judge Eyes is amazing, and the end credits scene was the nail in the coffin for letting my hunger for more story Rest In Peace. Even though I’ve been told Arpeggio is the game’s main theme and is supposed to be played in the title, I only heard it in the credits, but that being so, that is what put my other hunger, the hunger for an emotional, upbeat end, to rest, as well. I’ll stop gibbering and read your video (I say read because when you’re reading, you’re watching words or pictures and decoding them into their meaning, which is the same as person-to-person or online media.).

      I’ll be honest, I completely forgot I was going to type up, “My Own Style,” (A Theme in Judge Eyes.) of your retrospective… I’ll have to rewatch it again… What I do remember is your very specific point of Yagami being afraid of defending someone in court like he did before. The dialogue gives us A satisfying end to Tak’s struggle to phobiaphobia (The fear of fears, the desperate attempt of your sanity trying to claw itself back up from the hole of never-ending terror.). As Tak, himself, puts it, “It’s funny… When I was A lawyer, all I did was run from the truth… Now, I’m constantly searching for it.”, which shows that Tak had finally recognised his past and present, which is always the best first step, but, this time, Tak takes it in leaps and strides, where he (If my memory serves me right… I’ve been playing Lost Judgment and Yakuza: The Man Who Erased His Name, so I might be mixing A few things up, or have forgotten the order of events…) returns as A lawyer, defending A.D 9 (Even though it was more of A public interrogation, with both the Prosecutors and the Lawyers trying to squeeze information from Mr… Uh… Doctor Guy… (Look, I said my memory was A bit spotty, gimme A break!) In front of the jury.), before having to leave and leaving the court case in the young Lawyer-In-Training’s hands. Yagami left his role to A person that, in Lost Judgment, had grown into A calm, collected lawyer. Then, when all was finished, Yagami pointed out that he had, “been running from the truth,”, and had shown that he understood the blindness he caused himself, instead of only acknowledging that he had been running… (I’m running low on steam, I can’t be bothered to check if this statement holds water…)

      Never even knew that phobia you mentioned was a thing, but with that in mind it also brings another layer to his character growth. Judgment was my introduction to the Yakuza series (or Like A Dragon as it's now called). Mostly because it had a dub, I wish in the future if they remake Yakuza 0 - 6 they give them all an English dub treatment like here. The fan base would explode. That said, the story is very relatable and compelling, because a motive is to cure a real disease. It really does add that extra hook that people might not of realized existed.

    Not my favorite retrospective I've seen. The combat talks were good and I agree with basically everything said there. Biggest complaint I had was that the story was basically just recapped with nothing to break it up and very rarely did your own thoughts come up during the story. It made that entire summarization rather dry with a splash of water when talking about Hamura.
    I'm also surprised at a lack of mentioning for the side content (arcades, baseball, gambling, VR was mentioned only in passing). As that's one of my big critiques of the game. All of the minigames more or less just serves to funnel you into the VR game for money.
    Despite my grievances I'd say Judgment is one of my favorites they've put out narratively. The combat feels like it's just slightly off, the biggest example being the insane amount of guard breaking Tiger has. It's such a band aid to encourage using it in 1v1s and gimping Crane from being used outside of groups. Between that strongarmed forcing of what each stance is useful for and Yagami's fists bouncing off enemies randomly when they decide it's their turn to attack. It's still up there in enjoyability from the wall jumping and flux attack but none of the other games frustrated me like Judgment did for fights.
